Preview: Portland Timbers vs Toronto FC | Struggling Timbers Try To Jump Start Playoff Push

The Portland Timbers and Toronto FC are two teams who have struggled to come together and play cohesively. The Timbers, in their first year in MLS, were always expected to need time to come together as a team while Toronto are in the middle of their sixth head coach in five years and as many rebuilding efforts. Both have shown signs of being dangerous, capable teams in recent weeks, but neither have seen a truly complete game in league play.

The Timbers are coming off a 2-0 win over Argentine giants Club Athletico Independiente that saw their reserves put forth a dominant first half and hold off the South Americans for the remainder of the game, something the Timbers have struggled to do this season. Toronto also managed a 2-1 win in the CONCACAF Champions league at home against Real Esteli F.C. of Nicaragua.

The Timbers have continued to stick with their 4-5-1 formation recently but have seen success in friendlies playing in a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2, particularly in strong first half efforts against West Brom and Independiente.
