Once again, the Hawthorne Street Fair takes place the same date as SE Portland’s Sunday Parkways, so you might get to see the hamster ball bike this Sunday. Here are another  170+ pictures on flickr that I took at the street fair a couple years back.

The History of the Hawthorne Boulevard Street Fair

by Nancy Chapin (published in the SE Examiner, August 2011)

In 1982 Hawthorne Boulevard Business Association held its first ¬Å“Street Fair¬Â. It was a few non-profit booths and a guitarist located in the COIT Cleaners lot at 32nd Pl. and some sidewalk sales. In the intervening years, the street fair grew to involve more businesses, vendors, music and lots more neighbors, community members and visitors, coming to see what Hawthorne had to offer the neighborhood and the city. For the first ten years, the event focused on the area between 32nd and 38th, but by 1992, it was obvious that there were now enough destination businesses ¬Å“across the great divide¬Â (39th Avenue, now Cesar Chavez Blvd.) that the organizers added an International Stage at the Food Cart lot on 48th and a street party on 43rd with other activities and venues.

1993 was the first year of six two-day events, which, logistically, required a dozen or more volunteers just to deal with the required barricade set-up so we could have no parking and only one lane of traffic each way from 33rd to 38th during the day. People and the bus drivers loved the freedom of only two wide lanes of traffic with pedestrians, strollers, dogs and wheelchairs having plenty of room to get through the area in the normal parking and second driving lanes.

In 1995, we had the first of three Art Car Parades on Saturdays. We had cash prizes and art cars that came from as far away as Michigan and who stayed around for the day showing off their vehicles. One of the coolest was the Camera Van which had over 1400 cameras attached to it!

For many years, we had two large parking lots on SE 34th and SE 36th to place most of the vendors in, but as businesses changed and buildings took over the spaces, we started using other lots or closing streets. This year, the music is back on 34th and 41st, as it was last year, and vendors will be at SE 35th and 36th Avenues, Chase Bank, the UPS Store and the Key Bank/Papa Murphy's (and more) parking lot on SE 41st.

In 2007, after a few years off, organizers restarted the fair and your business neighbors are inviting all of you to come to Hawthorne Boulevard to have fun with us on Sunday, August 28, in conjunction with Sunday Parkways which will cross Hawthorne at SE 32nd and SE 45th.
