A woman of a hundred voices and equally as many facial expressions, Maria Bamford’s self-depreciating jokes are the stuff comedy dreams are made of. The 40-year old comedian has starred in the Fox series Sit Down, Shut Up and also earned a “Best of the Web” nod from Salon.com for her web series The Maria Bamford Show.
Bamford was lovely enough to do a quick and dirty email interview with PDX Pipeline, where she describes her love of Powell’s Books and how Portland audiences just get her. She performs Thursday, August 25 through Saturday, August 27 at Helium Comedy Club.
PDX Pipeline: You’ve spent a bit of time in Portland. What are your favorite things to see/do in the city?
Maria Bamford: I love to walk about- there’s the Stumptown Coffee situation and the corned beef place next to it and then the River and the POWELL’s!!!! Powell’s is awesome and I will be spending some time in there- for surely. Also, love to see the new local comics. Sleep in at the Crowne Plaza.
Maria Bamford Show & Ticket info…
PDX: How are Portland audiences compared with other places you travel?
MB: I am- judging from the internet responses on YouTube- weird and “I don’t get it” and there’s lots of creative types in Portland making hats of their Mother’s hair and paintings of the seaside all in black because that’s how they fucking see it, man and so, it’s a really good time for me. And people seem to read and are relatively depressed because of the rain. We have the same hobbies.
PDX: Do you have any pre-show rituals to get you revved up for a performance?
MB: Peanuts. 5 minute mindfulness download from UCLA. Light stretching and hair curling or flattening.
PDX: Has any Portland experience made its way into your act?
MB: Yes! I have fantasies (like I’m sure many people do) that if I moved somewhere else, I’d be a different person. If I moved to Portland, I think I’d have a lot of arguments on the street with people who have the exact same opinion that I do on every issue and then, in frustration, we’d all go craft. That is part of a new Schtick that is developing like a carrot. Almost ready to pull out, but might have to stuff it back in the soil.
PDX: Who makes you laugh the most?
MB: I love Marc Maron, Jen Kirkman, Jackie Kashiand and all of my ex-boyfriends. My pal Amy O’Connell is really funny, but she won’t go on stage.
