Girls Inc. of Northwest Oregon is hosting the premiere screening of the provocative documentary film Miss Representation, presented by Mark & Ann Edlen & Family. Written and directed by actress, filmmaker and former First Lady of San Francisco, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Miss Representation exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America.
The film challenges the media's limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself.
The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a hosted reception. The 90-minute film will begin at 6:45 p.m., followed by a panel conversation about the local implications of the issues explored in the film, and particularly the repercussions for girls. The trailer for the film can be viewed at www.missrepresentation.org.
Panelists Include
Susan Hess Logeais Founder of Hot Flash Films PDX, former model and actress
Michelle Blau Front woman for Portland rock band Kiss Kill
Jennifer Elliott Vice President of Marketing at Regence BlueCross BlueShield and an American Leadership Forum of Oregon Senior Fellow
Moderated by KINK’s Sheila Hamilton
Through the Miss Representation premiere event, Girls Inc. of NW Oregon aims to raise $15,000 to implement 9 sessions of Girls Inc. Media Literacy with girls in our community. Guests are encouraged to make contributions toward this goal when purchasing tickets.
The Girls Inc. Media Literacy ® program equips girls with the tools, confidence, vocabulary and encouragement they need to critically analyze messages and overcome the stereotypes the American media creates for them. Through Girls Inc. Media Literacy® girls increase their awareness of the scope and power of the media and the effects of media messages on girls and women.

I’ve long had an interest in how women are portrayed in media images. The trailer is great – I’d love to see this film!
