Star Theater
13 NW 6th Avenue

It's a dark and stormy night. The cabaret swirls smoke, euphoria, danger. A burlesque beauty sings a swooping, eerie song and suddenly sprouts a full beard. An itinerant tenor and a melancholic balloonist croon to apocalyptic waltzers. The drums ba-da-boom, the cellos duel, the gitarrón's been drinking.

Vagabond Opera raises the dead with style at their fifth annual Halloween bash and release party for their fourth full length album Sing for Your Lives! The event – held in the stunningly restored Star Theater (Portland’s historic 1911 silent film and Burlesque venue) presents a stunning night of haunting music, dance, ritual and art. Whether you want to dance, party or pray this night is for you.

Featuring Russian party band Chervona, Belly dance by Rachel Brice, fire arts by Amy Hotfield and dance revue by the Dolly Pops. Also offering an interactive Day of the Dead altar, psychic tarot readings, mexican hot chocolate and more for a truly eclectic and spell binding evening. Costumes highly encouraged.

The bash is the band’s most special annual event and is more then just a party. “We create an experience that allows people the opportunity to also sincerely commune with the important spiritual aspects of the holiday” says saxophonist and songwriter Robin Jackson. “They can commune with their ancestors through art and also get down and dance.”

The theme of the new album ties into the event as it acknowledges the bittersweetness of a darkened world and the glimmer of hope, dance, celebration and love that always seem to get us through.

  2.   Erin Says:

I’m a fan of Vagabond Opera AND Chervona! I saw Vagabond Opera on my birthday this summer and I’ve seen Chervona a number of times at Last Thursday. The music’s so fun! And the idea of seeing both of these great bands perform on Halloween is just too perfect. They’ll spook it up for us and help create the perfect high-energy day of the dead! I’d love to go! :) Thank you!

  3.   Tony Says:

I have been interested in seeing Vagabond Opera for years and haven’t yet been able to. I recently heard a couple of their albums and love them and it would be great to hear the troop to their thang live!

  4.   Kym Deinlein Says:

It is an unmitigated fact and quite well known to those in the know that I simply have the best Day of the Dead tattoos in PDX. It would be a tragic oversight that would make this bash a cake with no icing if you did not make sure I was there.

  5.   Naima Says:

Well, as a girl from Germany I am not very familiar with halloween and costumes. I think this sounds fantastic and would be a great way to experience the american halloween spirit with all that belongs to it, spook, costumes and party :)

I would love to go to this party – I’ve always wanted to have a tarot card reading amidst a dark spiritual setting. How cool is that??

  22.   Michele Says:

Because Halloween is the best holiday of the year. It is socially acceptable to be someone you’re not and indulge all your fears and fantasies.

  23.   Meghan Says:

I went to this show last year and had an amazing time! This year I would love to dress up, get down, and commune with spirits again with the Vagabond Opera!

  24.   elizabeth Says:

This is sure to be a blast. With Vagabond Opera to raise the dead and Chervona polka party music to dance with the dead;what a stellar pairing. Kudos to whoever made this happen! The interactive Day of the Dead altar and Tarot corner should raise some spirits;dead or alive. Planning my costume now. In fact ,I feel the spirit just writing about the night.

  25.   Shannon Says:

Halloween-time burlesque and Vagabond Opera? Sounds utterly awesome!

  26.   Crystal Says:

I would LOOOOOVE to win tickets to this event because, being a mom of a 3 year old, all my Halloween energy goes into making sure my son has a great Halloween. My husband and I are overdue for some spooky, grownup fun!

  27.   Kelly Says:

THIS is why I moved to Portland! To experience events like this. We don’t have anything like this in Idaho fo’ sho’!

  28.   Glenn Says:

My partner and I would love to come to the Transylvanian Voodoo ball as we have tried just about every other Halloween party in town, (Howl, Erotic Ball, bar parties, Bent, etc.) and are still searching for the best one yet. We always dress to thrill and add to the party wherever we are. I would tell you what we’ll be wearing, but that would just spoil it. Let us win the tickets and you’ll find out!!

  29.   Beth Says:

Vagabond, voodoo, aaaaand dancing? I’m sooooo in!!!

  34.   Alex Says:

I am SO excited about this event! sounds like its right up my alley. I am currently in Portland on an adventure inspired by my best friend, whom recently passed away. I will be putting some of her poetry on the alter. I would be so excited to win tickets because this spontaneous quest has left my financial situation in not the best spot, AKA nonexistent. I have a Dia De Los Muertos inspired costume! from recycled material! Its gonna be a great night!

  35.   Rick Says:

My fiancée are new to the area and so far are lovin it. We would love to attend to further our exploration of all that Portland has to offer and this sounds like it would be a killer event!

  36.   AD Says:

The Star Theater has been closed as long as I have lived in Portland, and I’d love to have the opportunity to go to an event so awesome in this killer venue! My roomie just moved here from Michigan and I have been looking for fun ways to introduce her to the city. We are both on tiny budgets so we normally just end up in the same couple of dives. I think this would blow her away! What a way to celebrate our favorite holiday!

  37.   heather Says:

I think I tried to go to something like this in the past but plans changed last minute or something, but I would love to check it out this year as the “dead” pirate Roberts……”to the pain!”

  38.   Kim Says:

I love Chervona and have always wanted to see vagabond opera, pick me pick me!

  39.   BobGuy Says:

    Sounds awesome!

  40.   Jen Says:

This sounds amazing! My boyfriend has his birthday on the 29th and we are both broke and have no Halloween or birthday plans… Help us make this a memorable weekend despite our current state of poverty!

  41.   Amy Says:

I’d love to win tickets, because I need to dance, party, AND pray!! I absolutely love everything about this event–and kudos to the person who wrote the description of it. It’s spellbinding and makes me want to attend even more. :)

  42.   Erika Says:

I had fun dancing to Chervona every time I see them play! Polishfest was my initiation and I’ve caught them on Alberta the past 2 months and won’t miss this show-they bring out the gypsy in me and the Vagabond Opera, well I would dress like that everyday if I had the wardrobe and plan to break out the vagabondage and black nail polish in honor of this event and of all the deceased.
