April Verch is gigging in Portland on October 20 at Alberta Street Pub in support of her new album, That’s How We Run.

April explores the Southern mountain traditions known as old-time music on That's How We Run, but always brings her Northern roots with her. Plucky, straight-backed Canadian tunes fit so snugly beside ancient Appalachian airs that you'd think they'd been neighbors for centuries. Read the rest of this entry »

We’re really excited to host the ladies behind the side-splittingly funny UnhappyHipsters.com as they release their new book It’s Lonely In The Modern World.

In a recent issue of The New York Times there’s a great Q&A about the ladies, the site and their process. The book is more than just a collection of posts from the site, it’s completely original content that takes on modern design and acts as a satirical take on being “The Essential Guide to Form, Function and Ennui.”

Join us this Friday, October 21st from 5 – 7pm. We’ll provide the wine.

King Yellowman has an incredible history in Reggae music. His upbringing at the Maxfield Home orphanage in Kingston and being albino in Jamaica were two obstacles the he overcame and went on to be (at one time) the biggest reggae artist since Bob Marley.

After winning a talent contest at Tastee Patties in Kingston, Yellow went on to excite reggae crowds all over Jamaica and the rest of the world with his boastful and sometimes bodacious lyrics. His ability to ride rhythm and excite a crowd made Yellow an instant hit in Jamaica. He also began to work with the Ace Sound System in St. Thomas and drew big crowds at his dancehall performances. Warren Haynes’ long-anticipated solo album, Man In Motion (Concord Records), is a timeless collection of songs that crackle with modern vitality yet draw on his deepest roots as an artist.

The disc pumps fresh blood into the heart of soul and blues, stoked by Haynes’s Herculean prowess as both a powerhouse singer and guitarist – a reputation he’s earned as a member of three of the greatest live groups in rock history: The Allman Brothers Band, The Dead and his own Gov’t Mule.

For Man In Motion, Haynes draws on his dynamic gravel-and-honey voice and stunning six-string syntax to create melodies that frame the past with the present, fusing enduring themes of love, desire and loss with bristling undeniably contemporary energy.

Widely regarded as one of the most innovative and genre-bending artists of his craft, Barnes' musical interests are both varied and adventurous, and he incorporates that versatility into a progressive approach to an instrument that is musically polarizing and steeped in tradition.

Although he demonstrates an appreciation for the history of the bluegrass, country, and folk music from which the banjo's reputation was born, his inventive take is what truly separates him from his contemporaries¬Â¦using the banjo as his ¬Ëœweapon of choice' to play non-traditional music like rock, fusion, and jazz with electronic percussion and loop elements. Tonight he is joined by PDX's beloved acoustic soul/newgrass pioneers, Fruition.
