The Northwest Film Center's acclaimed Reel Music Festival, spotlighting the inspired intersections of film and music through its presentation ofmusic-related short films, documentaries, and music videos, returns for its 29th iteration this fall.
Formerly a mainstay of the January arts and cultural calendar in Portland, Reel Music moves to October this year to accommodate its growth and increasing popularity. The Festival will take place October 7 - 23, 2011.
Kicking off Reel Music 29 with a one-two punch, the opening night film is a new biopic about one of the world's most beloved musicians, directed by a filmmaking legend: Martin Scorsese's George Harrison: Living in the Material World, which screens on Friday, October 7, at 7:00 p.m. in the Film Center's Whitsell Auditorium. Produced for HBO, Scorsese's intimate new film takes viewers on the musical and spiritual voyage that was George Harrison's (1943-2001) life. From Harrison's musical beginnings in Liverpool through his experience as a musician, philanthropist, and filmmaker, Scorsese weaves together never-before-seen material, including interviews with Harrison and his closest friends, performances, home movies, and photographs, resulting in a rare glimpse into the mind and soul of an extraordinarily talented artist.
Other Reel Music 29 highlights include: This is Noise Pop, an exploration of the genesis of indie rock, with director Adam Werbach in attendance; That was Then, This is Now: Portland Music Videos, juxtaposing vintage and current music videos from some of Portland's most talented bands, with several of the musicians and filmmakers in attendance; and Searching for Elliott Smith, tracing the late Portland musician's musical evolution, with director Gil Reyes in attendance. This year's Festival venues are the Film Center's Whitsell Auditorium (1219 SW Park) and McMenamin's Mission Theater (1624 NW Glisan).
The complete 36-film lineup can be found online at nwfilm.org.

I really want to see Instrument. I’m a big Fugazi fan and like every teen from the 90s who knows whats up I have the Complete Minor Threat Discography. Seeing this movie will do two things for me. One, it may let me verify the story my roommate told me while working at Yellowstone Natl Park in 96 that Ian Mackaye once crashed in his basement while on tour in the early 90s. Second, it may soften the blow of being denied the chance to see the band live in Germany because I was the only person on the exchange program whose host parents would not let them leave the house. I still hate those people for it. Anyway, fingers crossed.

i’ve loved elliot smith Forever! I saw his live show at the Satyricon in 1999. A sad day when he passed on. His music will live on Forever. Would love to see this film.

Searching For Elliot Smith. From listening to his albums in college, to saving the Oregonian when he died, to having a moment at the mural in Silverlake. His songs have provided a beautiful and, sometimes, sad soundtrack to my life.

Searching for Elliott Smith looks like a great story. Watching Jem Cohen’s “Lucky Three” at the Portland Music Videos screening last week stirred my interest even more to learn about who he was… What a musician!

Fugazi was the soundtrack to my angst-ridden youth, growing up in the DC area. Not much has changed… Instrument has long been a favorite and I’d love to see it on the big screen at least once!

I’d love to see this film- and what a great way to do that! I’d like to win, please?!

I would enjoy seeing either of these films. Heatmiser was my favorite band in the Portland music scene of the early ’90s. I loved Fugazi and missed seeing them at the 9:30 Club in DC while I was in school in Annapolis, but caught them later, at La Luna, I think. Love the Reel Music Fest but have missed most of it due to being unemployed and taking care of a sick friend!
