Pictures: Portland Body Worlds & The Brain Opens Today @ OMSI | Over 200 Human Specimens, Organs

Portland OMSI Body Worlds

The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry in Portland has an all new Body Worlds exhibit opening today focusing on the mysteries of the human brain.

In the 1970s, German anatomist  Gunther von Hagens’ invented a unique plastination technique which allows for better preservation of human bodies and organs for study. His traveling exhibitions include specimens from body donors, individuals who donated their bodies to the Institute for Plastination. Each specimen can take up to 1,500 hours to prepare.

The current exhibition at OMSI highlights neuroscience, brain development and performances, inviting reflection on the power, beauty and fragility of the human body and brain.

The museum and exhibition are open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and open late on Friday and Saturday evenings until 9 p.m. Prices range from $14 to $20. OMSI is located at 1945 SE Water Avenue.
