Keyboard ace Joey Porter (The Motet, Juno What?!) returns to PDX for the 8th Annual Tribute to Herbie Hancock. An assemblage of preposterously talented funk/jazz musicians handpicked for the occasion, the band tackles the music of Headhunters-era Herbie in all of it's dripping funk nastiness!

The maiden voyage of the tribute band was launched several years ago to perform the tunes of groundbreaking funk/jazz masters, Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters. After a string of sold-out shows, it became apparent that the band was not alone in their still-vibrant love of this era, so they formed several other all-star incarnations to deliver the music of the Meters, Sly Stone, and most recently, the great Stevie Wonder.

Joey's collection of players boasts an array of musical affiliations. The fabric of the band is sewn by Porterhouse alumni, Joey Porter on keyboards (Porterhouse, Rubberneck, Five Fingers of Funk, the Motet), Joshua Cliburn on saxophones (Porterhouse, Rubberneck, Intervision), Reinhardt Melz on drums (Gino Vannelli, Randy Porter, Curtis Salgado, Bobby Torres Ensemble), and Dan Scollard on bass (Porterhouse, Thousand Pieces).

In response to the conditional needs of the tribute orchestration, the group is accentuated by Jans Ingber on vocals and percussion (The Motet, Charlie Hunter), Chris Littlefield on trumpet (Karl Denson, Blusirkut, Phat Cidy Smokehouse), and Paul Creighton on vocals (Intervision).

You should give me these cuz it’s gonna be a good show and I can’t afford it due to people that think it’s okay to fuck over people that help them out.

  2.   Dylan de Thomas Says:

Because I am a Watermelon Man.

I’d love these tickets because we’re new to Portland and we love the Motet, love Juno What! and must then love this tribute event! Yay! No, really…..we’re the ones you want! We know how to funk!

Free tix, no free tix, barring catastrophic injury, come hell or high water, I will be there. I think the first Joey Porter performance I ever saw in Portland was the Herbie Hancock Tribute… this will be like my 4th or 5th. I’ve seen a bunch of his other projects too, from the Motet, to the Sly and the Family Stone and Stevie Wonder Tributes, to Juno What?! and it’s always the shiz. Special guests, perennial favorites, Joey’s lineups always bring it… Scollard will take you on a handlebar moustache ride of unrelenting funk fusion low end theory and Josh Cliburn destroys all comers on the sax, not to mention JP laying it down all nastylike, himself. This is one of the best shows of the year. Git some!

I would love to win tickets for this so I can take my friend who loves jazz out for the evening. Whenever we hang out he picks up the tab because he knows I haven’t got much spending money. He keeps lamenting our lack of interesting jazz and funk in Portland and this definitely fits the bill. I definitely owe him one!

  9.   Mikie Says:

Mind Melting Music … I must see this in person !!!!! Awesome !

  10.   Peter H Says:

Wow! A night of jazzy funk and funky jazz… either way Hancock’s is music to think about and music to love. I’d like to go to witness what happens when you get together this set of excellent musicians!

  11.   Sandra C Says:

okay so I met this new guy. finally, cuz the breakup with my ex was slow and hard. so I met this new guy. He has sweet eyes and is smart and sort of cute nerdy and even has a job and is open. I think he may actually be a grown up and he likes to play. And he is a jazz and blues and funk musician and we have only been on one date so far, but I think this could be something. We are supposed to go out again this weekend (he has been out of town) and I think this could make for some magic. And well of course I love Joni and Herbie loves Joni and I also live around the corner from the Goodfoot so I won’t have to get in my car and that makes everything perfect. I promise to report back.

  12.   Tom Says:

I gotta see some Headhunter grooves!

  13.   Jessica Says:

Always have wanted to go to this, pick me pleeease!!

  14.   T-bone Says:

Good god, I will dance so hard that the rug will be in tatters! Headhunter grooves are going to lift us all up and spin us around, drop us back to the floor, but it will still feel like we are floating! I would LOVE to go see this show. The dance party will be epic if I am, cause I got the moves.

  15.   Heather Says:

    I wanna go!!!

  16.   Laura Says:

My husband should win these tickets! I am out of town this weekend! He would totally love to go to this with our son! He’s bored at home while I am in san Diego for work! Please give these to my husband Rick! It would make his day since he misses me so much!

  17.   Laura Says:

I would love to win this for my husband! He’s lonely cuz I’m out of town on business. Winning would mean he would be less lonely! Thank you!
