Portland, Oregon, one of the most secular cities in the nation, will host the 2nd annual Portland Humanist Film Festival, featuring 17 films with themes of interest to secular humanists, including science, critical thinking, atheism, freethought, separation of church and state, human rights, civil liberties, and others. This three day event is the largest free thought film festival on the West Coast and is presented by Center for Inquiry-Portland with major support from the Humanists of Greater Portland.

In addition to Hollywood feature movies such as The Ledge and Agora, this year's Film Festival introduces films by independent local and national filmmakers. The Portland Humanist Film Festival will recognize notable independent films with five CFI-Portland Film Awards, plus the new PHFF
Audience Award to be announced on Sunday night.

The festival begins with ¬Å“Triple Feature Friday,¬Â a screening of The Nature of Existence, The Invention of Lying, and the popular Monty Python movie Life of Brian, complete with audience participation and a costume party. Other highlights include a presentation by Tom Flynn, editor of Free Inquiry magazine and executive director of the Council for Secular Humanism. Flynn's talk is titled “Who Are These Doubters Anyway?¬Â and sheds light on the growing segment of Americans who do not believe in a god. Bruce Adams, president of the Columbia chapter of Americans United for the Separation of Church & State, will speak about the importance of the separation of church and state in conjunction with the screening of The Lord is Not On Trial Here Today.

Throughout the weekend, the audience will have the opportunity to watch engaging films, listen to interesting presentations by producers, directors, and featured speakers, and learn about the growing cultural importance of secular humanist thought. A table is reserved at the Gypsy Lounge across the street from the event venue, where audience members can gather between and after screenings.

  1.   Gus Frederick Says:

I’d like to attend because as a life-long Freethinker AND a filmmaker, I am always interested in how others of my mind set visualize society and the world around this. Coming from a small Oregon town that has a very strong historical Free thought tradition, I am always amazed and impressed by those pioneers of the past.

I am so looking forward to it but as a retiree I am not sure how many days I can afford to attend so hope I win tickets to take a fellow retiree or struggling humanist.
