Holiday Ale Festival toasts the spirits of the season
16th annual event serves up four-dozen rare winter beers in the heart of downtown Portland
The 16th annual Holiday Ale Festival will take place Nov. 30 through Dec. 4 at Pioneer Courthouse Square, located at 701 SW Sixth Ave. on the MAX Light Rail line. The popular event will feature four-dozen big, bold ales designed to fend off the cold chill of a long winter night. From IPAs, Belgians and barleywines to winter warmers, porters and stouts, these beers are crafted specifically for the event or are hard-to-fine vintages, helping secure the event’s reputation as one of the nation’s preeminent winter beer festivals.
Despite being held outdoors during one of the coldest months of the year, more than 17,000 festival attendees stay warm and dry under clear-topped tents that cover the venue. Gas heaters create a cozy ambiance beneath the boughs of the region’s largest decorated Christmas tree. In addition to beer tasting, the festival also features on-site food, event merchandise and a coat and bag check that raises funds for the Children’s Cancer Association.
Event hours are 2 to 10 pm Wednesday, 11 am to 10 pm Thursday through Saturday, and 11 am to 5 pm Sunday. To avoid the lengthy lines that often accompany Northwest beer fests, the recommended days for attendance are Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. The Holiday Ale Festival is for ages 21 and over.
What makes this festival standout from other similar events is the beer selection; the festival works with every brewery involved to make sure they can send a beer that has either been made specifically for the event, or is a rare or vintage beer that isn’t commonly tapped in the state. According to festival manager Preston Weesner, “It’s about the fans. This is a once-a-year event and these beer lovers are here to support their favorite brewery. When they get up to the taps and find something special, it further solidifies their support of Oregon craft brews and strengthens our reputation in the beer world as THE place to drink beer.”
To enter and consume beer, the purchase of an entry package is required. The general admission package at the door costs $25 and includes the 2011 tasting mug and eight taster tickets. Advance general admission packages cost $25 and include the tasting mug, 10 taster tickets and expedited entry all five days. Advance VIP packages are available for $50 and include the tasting mug, 20 taster tickets, a bottle of water, access to VIP lines and express entry all five days. Express re-entry requires a wristband and the 2011 mug, and is subject to the festival’s capacity. Previous year’s mugs will not be filled. Advance packages are available online at www.holidayale.com.
Once inside the festival, a full mug of beer costs four taster tickets, and a four-ounce taste costs one ticket. Certain limited release and special tappings may not be available in full mug pours, or may cost double tickets. Additional beer tickets can be purchased for $1 apiece. Designated drivers in a party of two or more may purchase a designated driver wristband for $5, which includes Crater Lake Root Beer or bottled water for the duration of the stay.

Yes, I would love to attend the Winter Ale Festival…..I love trying different beers and you can’t beat the location…Portland’s living room with the beautifully decorated Christmas tree!!! Pick me!
November 22, 2011 at 12:33
Pick me because I love beer!
November 22, 2011 at 12:37
Oooh, I love fancy winter beers. After spending Thanksgiving with my family, this would be the perfect treat.
November 22, 2011 at 12:40
Love the holiday beer fest! Winter beers are my favorite after fresh hop so I would love to go.
November 22, 2011 at 12:47
Yes please!!! My favorite beer fest!
November 22, 2011 at 12:51
Things have been rough for me financially and I’m not going to be able to buy beer or other non-essential items for a while. It’d be great to be able to have one fun weekend with a friend to get me through this winter :)
November 22, 2011 at 13:11
I would make a great candidiate for the holiday ale festival, because ale festivals are not only my favorite kind of festival…but also, through a ridiculous comedy of errors over the years, I’ve never been able to go! Let me see what all the fuss is about…
November 22, 2011 at 13:20
I’m a huge Portland beer fan but have never attended this festival. I really want to this year :o) Winning a free package would seal the deal. Thanks!
November 22, 2011 at 13:20
I don’t often drink…
But when I do I make sure it is a Holiday Ale
November 22, 2011 at 13:20
Drinking beer in a tent makes it taste better! It’s science. Pick me!
November 22, 2011 at 13:23
I want to win because attending the Holiday Ale Festival is the only way my body recognizes that winter is coming.
November 22, 2011 at 13:33
It’s the most wonderful time of the BEEEEEER!
November 22, 2011 at 13:34
Im a broke alcoholic. Im in need for a fix!
November 22, 2011 at 13:35
1) I like beer
2) I like the holidays
3) I like holiday beer(s)
4) I need to get out and try new ones.
5) I’d rather do that than untangle the damn christmas lights…
Thx.
November 22, 2011 at 13:36
I like beer.
November 22, 2011 at 13:42
I love all of the one offs created for this festival!
November 22, 2011 at 13:47
I may faint from the overwhelm of so many delicious seasonal beers. So… that would be funny.
Also, I won’t be able to go unless I win!
Winner winner, Sleigh’r dinner!
November 22, 2011 at 13:50
Before I moved to Portland, I actually super disliked beer. But now, I am a beer junkie. My parents have labeled me a Beer Snob.
I Love Beer! I LOVE Beer Festivals even more! I haven’t been to this one in a long time because it comes at a time of year when my budget is super limited.
It would surely please me, my palate, and my wallet if I could attend for FREE!
November 22, 2011 at 13:50
I love the strong beers of the holiday ale fest, one of my favorite beer fests!
November 22, 2011 at 13:52
A very potent and dangerous fest. I love it!
November 22, 2011 at 13:57
A yearly tradition, and great way to celebrate my birthday as well!
November 22, 2011 at 13:58
Hell Yeah! It’s time to get sweaty in a tent downtown! (and we don’t have to listen to any “occupy” drums circles, to do it.)
Holiday Ale Fest is the best winter-time beer fest in Portland! Get warmed up, sample some nuts, eat some pizza, and stumble home on the MAX.. Perfect.
Yes Please
November 22, 2011 at 14:26
I want to win those free tickets to help my beer nerdness grow. I am an avid beer fan but have grown to only drink IPA’s and I need to get outta my rut
November 22, 2011 at 14:57
Why? Because it’s time to drink winter beer! Outside. In the rain. Thanks!
November 22, 2011 at 15:15
I would be so greatfull for the holiday beerfest tickets this year! It would be such a treat for my husband and I. We have gone beer tasting every year and love the fun seasonal atmosphere. We have lost family, jobs and our apartment in NW. This would be a great dose of fun for anyone that gets to go.
November 22, 2011 at 15:25
Winter ales are my favorite!
November 22, 2011 at 15:58
Because maybe it’s about time I start liking beer again.
November 22, 2011 at 16:12
I missed the beer festival this summer!! I’m hoping this one will make up for it! Would love to win free tickets!
November 22, 2011 at 16:25
I love the idea of sneaking out of work early to drink big, bold ales! Looking forward to it!
November 22, 2011 at 16:47
Through my experiences any and every time I camp, I’ve learned that beer tastes intricately and distinctly better when drank in a tent, when it is raining out, with other people you love being around. Since many of these ales are specials and one-offs that one can only try at this festival, I would like to taste them in the habitat which allows best for tasting uncommon, strong, dark, and DELICIOUS beers.
Oh, and I already have the perfect mitten picked out for my stein-hand!!
November 22, 2011 at 17:00
well.. like everyone else here.. I love beer!! I’m also a student and can’t really afford to go.. this just seems so awesome with the tents and heat and special winter beers!
November 22, 2011 at 18:48
I’m visiting all the way from Ireland, and would love to check out Oregon’s famous craft beers in this truly wintry weather!
November 22, 2011 at 19:11
I’ve a friend coming into town from a land faraway whom I should love very much to share the experience of a Portland beer festival with, particularly since this friend considers himself a ‘big beer fan’ and yet doesn’t know the difference between an IPA and a Lager.
It’d be super cool to do this for free, since I certainly can’t afford to get us both in otherwise.
November 22, 2011 at 21:29
One of the main reasons I moved to Portland this summer was the amazing beer scene here. I need to experience everything “beer” that Portland has to offer and I’m pretty short on funds.
November 23, 2011 at 08:47
I was deployed to Mozambique, Africa last November for 11 months. I missed Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, my girl’s birthdays (3 & 1), 4th of July, and every other holiday/occasion until returning the end of this September. There were only 5 not very good beers in Mozambique. I need to re-acquaint my palette with the numerous outstanding beers of the Pacific Nortwest.
November 23, 2011 at 10:26
Love beer, love being able to walk home from this event! ha
November 23, 2011 at 10:33
Would love to spend the evening drinking up the best of the Northwest with may favorite man. Nothing says love like drinking a thick, delicious, creamy Porter under the wet and cool Portland sky.
November 23, 2011 at 10:36
Haven’t been to a beer event YET in Portland! Please pick me.
November 23, 2011 at 10:41
Getting on a plane Wed…see ya there!
November 23, 2011 at 10:44
Been waiting for a year when I heard about it and finally bought plane tickets.
November 23, 2011 at 11:13
Wow. What an exciting event. I’ve wanted to go to this for years!
November 23, 2011 at 11:15
Moved to Portland in May and have missed the other beer festivals due to weddings and other no-can-miss events. Really hoping to make it to this one, as winter beers are my favorite and we live just down the street!
November 23, 2011 at 11:35

November 23, 2011 at 12:37
HAF is the BEST of all the great Portland beer fests!
Nothing better than skipping out of work on Thursday (when the crowds aren’t too bad) and waming up with strong ales all afternoon! :)
November 23, 2011 at 13:55
Beers are wonderful! Winter is wonderful! Portland is wonderful!
November 23, 2011 at 14:37
I am from New York. You know nothing of winter here in Portland. I must attend to enchant you with my stories of winter that will compliment your winter brews.
November 23, 2011 at 15:02
I just moved to Portland and have never been to a beer festival before! I LOVE Portland and I LOVE beer! I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the start of the holiday season than with a Portland beer festival!
November 23, 2011 at 17:53
I never miss the alefest!
November 23, 2011 at 20:02
I’d love to ‘occupy’ Pioneer Square with some holiday ales in hands (yes… note the plural usage).
November 23, 2011 at 20:31
I have been waiting months for this event!! YAY!! I would love to go.
November 23, 2011 at 20:36
I just finished 10 months of training at work and winning these tickets would be a great way to say thank you to my coach who devoted his time to train me.
November 23, 2011 at 22:30
YUM! Would LOVE to attend the beer festival.
November 23, 2011 at 22:38
Glad to be back in Portland at this time of year! I’d love to enjoy hiding from the cold under the Holiday Ale Fest tents, enjoying some delicious brews with my friends.
November 23, 2011 at 23:05
I have always wanted to go to this, but I’m usually working! Well not this year!!! This would be such fun and my first day out with friends since my baby was born
November 23, 2011 at 23:31
I’m new in town and need to get out. Pick me!
November 23, 2011 at 23:53
Hey! My name is Tiny, and I am one of the ” Big Guys’ ” helpers. Yea, thats right… I’m Santa’s elf. And with Christmas right around the corner, life at the North Pole is rough. My little fingers are in the early stages of carpal tunnel from all the hammering and my eyeballs are bulging out of their sockets from starring at naughty/nice lists. Not to mention, Mrs. Clause can be a real sour gumdrop, blegh. I NEED some relief. Some other elves and I fermented mistletoe to try and spike our hot cocoa… It didn’t work. Although, afterwards some elves did say they kissed a girl and they liked it…? Anyway, hook a pointy-earred nine-to-fiver UP!! I mean, would you want to wear shoes with bells on them all day long? Tell ya what.. if you reply to this post, i’ll make sure you are on the NICE list. – Happy Holidays from me and my homie, Rudolph
November 24, 2011 at 01:25
I love how we surround our XMAS tree with a beer tent. It is somehow so Portland to be in a tent drinking after work!
November 24, 2011 at 01:54
I would like to attend the holiday ale festival because I have never been to this one. I love good beer. And this is my favorite time of the year to enjoy them. All the different seasonals make it exciting! I would love the opportunity to sample even more than what I can get at the grocery store.
November 24, 2011 at 02:01
This is the time of year when the really good beers are available, the barleywines are my favorites.
November 24, 2011 at 02:02
Even Santa would be crazy to miss this one!
November 24, 2011 at 02:45
I love beer but most of my craft beer tasting has happened while I lived in Madison Wisconsin. I’d love to try some of the pnw’s offerings.
November 24, 2011 at 03:47
Who wouldnt want to attend?!?
November 24, 2011 at 06:21

November 24, 2011 at 08:24
I just moved here three weeks ago! This event looks so fun!!
November 24, 2011 at 08:28
In the true spirit of enjoying the winter beers, I stop consuming most calories sometime in late October. I take some favorite root vegetables and sharp greens in from time to time, but really….I drink my calories for Nov and Dec. Do you really want me to starve?
November 24, 2011 at 08:32
This would be really cool for me & the wife. And I wouldn’t have to sit around and listen to the guys at work talk about all the beers I’m missing again this year.
November 24, 2011 at 08:38
This is the most hardcore of all the beerfests in town. We are on a mission to try everything (over several days). This package will surely help us! Should you pick us we will reward you with drunken pictures!
November 24, 2011 at 08:42
I’ve never had a chance to go to this, but it seems fantastic. I’d love the chance to go and see it like it’s meant to be seen.
November 24, 2011 at 08:51
I have never been as it always seems to fall on a bad weekend. Would love to go and try all those delicious stouts and porters!
November 24, 2011 at 08:51
I love going to Portland beer festivals, and am building up a following on my beer tasting blog. This would be a great piece, I love winter warmers, and am a slightly broke high school teacher. In would feel lucky to win these tickets!
November 24, 2011 at 09:18
Wnderful event. Have not had the pleasure of attending ye but plan to. Free passes would be nice.
November 24, 2011 at 09:29

November 24, 2011 at 09:30
I should leave my apartment sometime this winter, and I might as well drink beer while doing it
November 24, 2011 at 09:30
The winter ale festival is a yearly tradition for me and my friends. The Holiday season wouldn’t be the same without it!! My husband and I are thinking about starting our own little family next year so this will be the last year we can go for a while. Tickets would be an amazing Christmas/first baby gift! :)
November 24, 2011 at 09:30
Why lie–I need a beer!
November 24, 2011 at 09:43
Merry holidays! Beer in hand, makes this girl merry…what a fitting festival!

The best head in the world is on holiday ale.
November 24, 2011 at 10:47

November 24, 2011 at 11:48
As a self proclaimed beer snob, I have to be at this event. Being unemployed, a free entry would be most welcome!
November 24, 2011 at 12:12
I am too poor to get my boyfriend a Christmas present. Please help a beer-loving, microbrew obsessed couple get good and drunk on wonderful dark beer!!!
November 24, 2011 at 12:33
After attending a years worth of festivals being the dd and sampling lots of root beer ( all for a good cause of course, being a mom is awesome) I would love to attend my favorite festival! Mommy wants a Sang Noir!
November 24, 2011 at 13:19

November 24, 2011 at 18:37
New to Portland, would like to have a better understanding of why ‘ale’ is so popular in this area.
November 24, 2011 at 18:47
Yes please.
November 24, 2011 at 19:06
Pick me! I want to take my busy mom out for a evening of fun – she’s a teacher. it would be so much fun
November 24, 2011 at 19:48
My bf loves craft beers.
November 24, 2011 at 19:50
Please let me go! I love holiday beers so much, and so does my dear patient sweetheart! And we’ve never gotten to go to this because we are too broke all the time! So please say yes! Will it sweeten the pot if i say I’ll do something nice for somebody else, whether or not I get to go?
November 24, 2011 at 20:12
One of the highlights of our beer drinking year. I love this event and will be taking a precious vacation day off from work to attend.
November 24, 2011 at 20:31
Plan to attend either way but for free would rock!

November 25, 2011 at 10:20
I want to go because there is no way I can hit up all those breweries this winter and try their seasonals! I moved to Portland in January and have heard about this event all year long!

November 25, 2011 at 11:05
I’ve seen the beer festival scene in the summer, but seeing that I prefer the darker and seasonal varieties, it would make much more sense for me to go to the Holiday Ale Festival!
November 25, 2011 at 11:19
I would love to take my friend that just celebrated their birthday and is quite a beer fan.
November 25, 2011 at 12:26

November 25, 2011 at 15:08
I would love to win this package. I am volunteering at the festival, but my shift is on the last day, and this package would allow me to try some of the beers beforehand so I can make educated recommendations to the attendees. Thank you.
November 25, 2011 at 15:30
Warm me up!!!
November 25, 2011 at 15:32
My heart is like an empty beer can
twisted & torn and bent inside
with no purpose in mind but to stagment & remain empty.
Once it was full of life foaming and brimming over with love.
But no more!
Please let me refill it with some holiday cheer!
November 25, 2011 at 16:00
We had sooooooo much fun at this last year!
November 25, 2011 at 16:06

On December 4th I have go away for a job that will take me all over the country. This might sound cool, but as far as beer is concerned, it’s not. This might be the last time I’ll be able to taste that sweet, sweet flavor of quality craft brew for the next 4 months.
November 26, 2011 at 14:04
It’s my hubby’s 40th birthday weekend (12/4) & he loves beer so this would make the perfect present for him…gathering of good friends with beer in hand…Thanks…
November 26, 2011 at 17:37
I would like to win because trying new beers at this price is awesome. I can see what I like with a taste and not worry about waste. this would be also a fun event to go to with my friend that is different than most events.

I’ve never been to the winter ale festival, only the summer fests, so this would be a fun experience for me.
November 26, 2011 at 20:57
beer…hooray!
November 26, 2011 at 23:24
Sounds like a blast, something fun for my friend who just moved to town, and I to do.

Favorite Portland beer fest. I go every year!
November 27, 2011 at 09:50

November 27, 2011 at 10:06
What a great way to taste great beer in our great city.
November 27, 2011 at 10:27
I went to the Holiday Ale Festival last year. It was great.
November 27, 2011 at 11:11
This event every year really makes me feel that the holiday season has arrive. Winter beer are always such a short run and are always great. Happy holidays and Cheers.
November 27, 2011 at 11:48
My first holiday season in Portland would be complete with free tickets to the Holiday Ale Festival!

I Love Beer. What more can I say.
November 27, 2011 at 13:56
I have just recently become a single mother to 3 boys due to the tragic death of my husband about 2 mos ago. I have finally gotten my boys settled, happy, safe, and seecure in a new home with a clean start. Before I embark on my next task, which is Christmas shopping on a very tight budget and using my gifts to pay for my childrens’ gifts, I would love to take a day and immerse myself in Portland’s delcious seasonal brews, recharge my faith that single mothers may get a day to themselves, as a Christmas gift. I have missed the priviledge of having a budget that includes beer. Please pick me to win, I promise to enjoy every single drop.
November 27, 2011 at 14:12
My twin sister is flying in from Japan and this is our Christmas holiday weekend. One of the few events we were going to have time for was the Holiday Ale Festival on Sunday morning. We would really love this package and a memory for the two of us before she has to go back home.
November 27, 2011 at 15:44
Just moved to Portland & would love to go and taste all the yummy beers that Portland is known for.
November 27, 2011 at 20:10
I would LOVE to win this so I can take my very best friend for a much-needed holiday celebration/break from what has been a difficult year for us both!! (And did I mention that neither one of us has ever been to the Holiday Ale Festival?) MANY thanks!! :)
November 27, 2011 at 20:10
Free Beer? Feeeeed me semore! Thats why I should win.
November 27, 2011 at 20:12
This is by far the best Ale fest in the West! I would love to go, but can’t afford to. Please pick me!
November 27, 2011 at 20:13
A Holiday event that reminds us to relax instead of adding stress is always a welcome event in the life of a social worker!
November 27, 2011 at 20:15
Because women who love beer are sexy!
November 27, 2011 at 20:16
I love attending the Holiday Ale Festival. It is often the best of the best of what breweries have to offer and usually showcases some of their best efforts. There are generally no better beers offered at other Portland beer festivals. HAF reigns supreme.
November 27, 2011 at 20:19
I need a break and some good beer after all the work travel and funerals I have had lately!
November 27, 2011 at 20:20
Mmmmm beeeer! Dough!
November 27, 2011 at 20:41
I would like to attend because I have Wednesday afternoon and Thursday off. I have already put my Christmas lights up and all I have left to do is drink delicious holiday beers!
November 27, 2011 at 21:04
My bestir and I were just talking about how we hope they have a groupon for this event but winning this would be even better
November 27, 2011 at 21:15
I love beer from the top of my head to the bottom of my feet and the Holiday Ale Festival makes me squeal like a little school girl. Please give me the gift of feeling like a school girl by hooking me up with tickets
November 27, 2011 at 21:21
The holiday craziness could drive me to drink. Hook me up!
November 27, 2011 at 21:23
My guest and I have a very special post-winter-ale-consumption dance choreographed. Kind of like “more cow bell” but looks like “more jingle bell”.
November 27, 2011 at 21:34
Best city, best beer, best holiday! Cheers!
November 27, 2011 at 22:06

November 28, 2011 at 08:30
Great festival, well organized in one of the best beer towns. What else do you want?
November 28, 2011 at 09:10
I really like the idea of celebrating the holidays with beer inspired by this time of year; that’s something that’s on par with the airing of grievances and feats of strength!
November 28, 2011 at 10:30
I’ve just moved to this fabulous city & do not think I will truly know Portland until I experience this festival of winter delight!!!!!!!!!
November 28, 2011 at 12:32
It’s my 40th birthday on Friday! What a great b-day present it would be to go the ale fest for free!
November 28, 2011 at 12:43
Because we live in Portland and cider and egg nog just won’t do. If I don’t win these tickets, I’m likely to pull a scrooge out of utter despair and deny the existence of Santa Claus himself.
November 28, 2011 at 12:52
My cousin and I have a reunion every year over a beer. Would love to do it here!
November 28, 2011 at 13:54
Beer, beer, the magical fruit. The more you drink, the more you (burp)
November 28, 2011 at 14:48
This is one of our favorite and dangerous beer tastival/festivals, given the higher alcaholic percentage in these wonderfull one-off specialty winter beers. We beleive that those who taste together stay together. And because we work retail we have to plan in advance to take the same time off together for almost every brewfestival we can. This one has been planned since before the Hood River Hops festival.
November 28, 2011 at 15:06
“Nobody’s walking out on this fun, old-fashioned family Christmas. No, no. We’re all in this together. This is a full-blown, four-alarm holiday emergency here. We’re gonna press on, and we’re gonna have the hap, hap, happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap-danced with Danny f-ing Kaye. And when Santa squeezes his fat white ass down that chimney tonight, he’s gonna find the jolliest bunch of assholes this side of the nuthouse.”
- Clark W. Griswold, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
^^^^This is the kind of experience I want
at this year’s Holiday Ale Fest ^^^ :)
November 28, 2011 at 15:08
I look forward to this event all year long! My student budget is really tight, but I will sacrifice food for these amazing holiday ales. I’d much rather win this great prize!
November 28, 2011 at 15:14
“And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled ’till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.” ~ Like an awesome day at the Holiday Ale fest with friends?
November 28, 2011 at 15:25
I want to take a Dr. on a date and I am broke. I like him and he deserves a good time for all the volunteer work he has done overseas.
November 28, 2011 at 18:16
As a recent transplant from England, I enjoy a good pint or three. This festival will be a brilliant opportunity to find my new favourite Portland winter brew.
November 29, 2011 at 15:05

November 29, 2011 at 17:37
I live downtown and love good beer, so this is perfect!
November 29, 2011 at 22:54
I want to win these tickets because ever since I became self employed it’s harder to make time stir fun and most of my money goes to expenses. Plus, this might help me get lucky if ya know what I mean!
November 30, 2011 at 11:31
i would drink to this
November 30, 2011 at 12:49
