Portland-by-way-of-Eugene, Oregon trio Floater deliver their best album to date with “Wake,” their eighth studio album. Writing more sophisticated, well-crafted songs with each release, “Wake” (Typhon Records) delivers a twelve-track collection of melodic, pop-laden psychedelic guitar-rock decked out in chunky guitar riffs, primal drumming, and soaring vocals.

Consisting of front man/bassist Rob Wynia, guitarist Dave Amador, and drummer Pete Cornett, Floater’s Northwest roots are rich and firmly planted, helping to account for the fact that they are one of the region’s top-drawing acts, and continue to draw new crowds in each of their developing markets. Architect A.E. Doyle left his mark on Portland. The Benson Hotel, Civic Stadium, Meier and Frank, the Pacific Building-these structures and dozens more are reminders of Portland's rapid growth in the early 20th century and, significantly, how architectural design during that period identified and legitimized institutions and the social structure of the growing city.

Historian Phil Niles examines the stages of Doyle's development as an architect, the evolution of his style, and how his career reflected-and furthered-Portland's growth.

Philip Niles is a professor of History Emeritus at Carleton College, where he taught for thirty-three years on the history of Europe between the Fall of Rome and the Renaissance. He grew up in Milwaukie and returned to the Portland area after retirement. He has since turned his research talents to the history of the Clatsop Indians, A.E. Doyle, and early 20th century Portland. He is the author of Beauty of the City: A.E. Doyle, Portland's Architect and is currently working on a book about Portland's early merchants he calls ¬Å“The Dinner Party.¬Â

When: Saturday, December 17, 2011, 6-9pm

Lux | 500 NW 14th Ave, Portland, Oregon
More info: www.pica.org

Over 100 local artists will spend the day pulling fresh monoprints from the presses at PICA's temporary printmaking studio. This year, we introduce new sizes and prices to the evening sale-prints are available for $50-$250, and all proceeds benefit PICA's artistic programs. Snag a one-of-a-kind artwork from a local legend or fall in love with a piece by a bright new talent.

Prints for PICA was founded in 2003 by artist Stephen Hayes as a way for artists to support PICA without straining their bank accounts or artwork inventories. Hayes wanted to create a new kind of fundraiser that would teach artists the basics of printmaking-a process he loved. As a bonus, when other organizations solicited artwork for their auctions or benefits, artists would be able to donate prints made on a free studio day, and not have to pillage works from their inventory.

The event has grown to include the work of over 100 local artists, ranging the gamut from students to emerging exhibitors to well-regarded and established makers. Prints for PICA is an annual social occasion for the local art community, bringing together artists for a day of camaraderie and creative exchange.

This year’s artists include: Abra Ancliffe, James Archer, Ray Anthony Barrett, Amy Bernstein, Pat Boas, Derek Bourcier, Christine Bourdette, John Brodie, Will Bruno, Christopher Buckingham, Wayne Bund, Nolan Calisch, Bruce Conkle, David Corbett, Matthew Courtway, Posie Currin, Dana Dart-McLean Melia Donovan, Liam Drain, Jenn Feeney, Damien Gilley, Renny Gleeson, Daniel J Glendening, Sam Guerrero, Bryson Hanson, Stephen Hayes, Jesse Hayward, Yuji Hiratsuka, Deborah Horrell, Linda Hutchins, Sara Kacvinsky, Vanessa Kauffman, Gina Keough, Beth Kerschen, Chris Lael Larson, Cynthia Lahti, Tina Lange, Kendra Larson, Michael Lazarus, Jen Lorentzen, Dana Lynn Louis, Alex Mackin Dolan, Victor Maldonado, Mack McFarland, Michael McGovern, Rachael Miller, Jenene Nagy, Melody Owen, Bonnie Paisley, Michael Parich, William Park, Trude Parkinson, Brittany Powell, MaryAnn Puls, Kyle Raquipiso, Kent Richardson, Morgan A Ritter, Catherine Rondthaler, Ben Rosenberg, Calvin Ross Carl, Amy Ruppel, Jack Ryan, Blair Saxon-Hill, Stephen Slappe, Ashley Sloan, Stephanie Snyder, Krystal South, Rory Sparks, Raf Spielman, Anya Spielman, Jason Sturgill, Gary Sweet, Joe Thurston, Everett Vangsnes, Samantha Wall, Valerie Wallace, Heather Watkins, Jacob Wilkinson, Christy Wyckoff, and more to come!

A CHRISTMAS CAROL
ONE MAN. TWENTY VOICES.

Go back in time to the 1800s, when Charles Dickens toured the world giving one man performances of his most beloved story, A Christmas Carol, dazzling audiences with his theatrical virtuosity.

Working from the original reading version that Dickens himself used, veteran actor Thom Bray re-creates Dickens’ one-man tour de force. In this solo version, Bray, as Charles Dickens, creates all of the characters himself, from Scrooge to Tiny Tim.

Now in its 8th Year, the Oregonian called his performance “A revelation!…. in his straightforward yet highly accomplished performance, Bray rediscovers the Victorian soul of this Christmas perennial.

If you’re looking for something 130 years away from our modern, holiday kitsch, then this version of A Christmas Carol will transport you!

No ghostly apparitions floating down from the fly space or up from a trap door. No street-scene crowds or wooden crutches. Just a room, a text, a voice and the audience’s imagination.” The Oregonian
