Philly’s Phunkestra just celebrated their two year anniversary party and are ready to ring in the new year! Soul queen Tahoe Jackson will be leading the charge while the Phunk horn driven powerhouse, Philly’s Phunkestra holds down the groove. Winter is setting in but this night of rare funk and soul grooves by such epic labels as Philadelphia International and Motown will be burnin’ the place down!
¬Å“Tahoe Jackson, a thoroughly stunning Portland soul singer so witty and powerfully charismatic that she almost induced tears and laughter simultaneously. Spookily channeling the brash spirit of Nina Simone, she belted out an improv number with backing from the Nick Jaina Band, playfully associating Hebb with culinarily shameful Hot Pockets and decrying a lover who tossed her on the floor like forgotten spare change.¬Â Hannah Levin – Seattle Weekly.
Miss Tahoe Jackson originally hails from the bay area but has been gracing the Pacific NW club and concert stages for almost a decade with her distinctive, and instinctive voice and passionate live performances. Many have compared Miss Jackson's voice to the plaintive growl of Etta James mixed with the majestic grace of an Ella or a Nina.
9-piece funk/soul group Philly's Phunkestra will be completing this collaboration with what is to be a night of rare funk and soul grooves by some of the greats at Philadelphia International Records and Motown.
¬Å“If you enjoy a high energy dance party, you have to check this band out!¬Â- Melophobe.
By opening the night with Philly’s Phunkestra and a slew of guests it will give you the reason to get there early and get warmed up. Philly’s Phunkestra is a melting pot of both Portland locals and transplants (Chicago) and have found themselves making this a monthly affair and showing no signs of losing that swagger they started with. The hard-hitting punch of the horn section weaved together by Phillips' monster keyboard stack solos and talkbox work will cause your legs to move in ways you never thought.
¬Å“These past two years have been so good to us and it makes it easy on me when I have such a talented and humble group to work with. Members come and go but the attitude and expectations stay the same. I really appreciate them and what they do day in and day out.” says Philly about his core group. “The first two years have been so good to us and the people here in Portland have really embraced us and we appreciate them.¬Â Phillips understands and acknowledges that the success of the group is not from him or the music he writes but from the people in the music community who enjoy the Phunkestra and local live music.
Since the fall of 2009 Philly's Phunkestra has had the opportunity to share the stage and perform with some of their biggest influences like Questlove (The Roots), The Wailers, Rebirth Brass Band, Dumpstaphunk, B*Side Players and Mr. Lif.
¬Å“We have been extremely fortunate and even got a little anxious just to jump on the same stage with guys like that, which have a kind of history and reputation,¬Â Phillips recalls co-billing with Rebirth Brass Band and Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk. “We are just happy to be a part of and to bring the party where a the Phunkestra goes.”

Funky from the start…come on 2012!!
Would really love to take my wife out for New Years……. last New Years we were 13 days from becoming parents, and I had to work, bartending at a lottery joint, followed by end of year inventory til 6 am, so my poor pregnant wife spent it alone…. We were also newlyweds, spending our first NYE apart and pregnant…. we wouldn’t change a thing(well maybe the inventory part, that really sucked!) our little Avram is just an amazing joy, and we love being parents. That being said, we really haven’t had a “Date” in 18 months and since we happily blew every penny we had on the little man, winning tickets to do something fun on New Years Eve would really put the Icing on the cake this Holiday Season!
So why not let Big Daddy Funk it Up wit his Lil Lady?
because I like funk music…and the blue monk is close to my house…AND I want to do something awesome for new years.
I’m feeling like it’s going to be a funking great NYE celebration. Let me in…..I’ve had a great year and this BM evening will make my angel of a girlfriend feel very special.
I thought funk was dead until I moved to Portland. Thank the gods of Portlandia!! Free tickets would also be nice
First new years Eve with my boyfriend and I’d love to do something awesome:)
Thirty nine years ago, on Dec 31,1972, in a land not afar from Philly, the earth gave birth to a funk star eyed doe. Since then this interstellar sister has traveled the time grooves and found herself all ticket un-funked up on the eve of her birth anniversary. Let the universe unfold as it will and praises let her and Mr L share a journey into the center of a saxophone upon the dance floor!
I will provide donut holes to the entire pdx staff if chosen. Yeah. Donut holes.
I would LOVE to get tickets to this! I love funk and definitely need a good new years to come my way. Plus, I love The Blue Monk.
I am new to portland and would love to see what portland has to offer.
