As they do yearly to prepare for the Chinese New Year celebration later this month, Portland’s Lan Su Garden will offer free admission for eight days (Chinese lucky number) starting Monday. The forecast currently shows rain until Friday, so you might want to hit this event ASAP to beat the weekend rush.

To kick off 2012 and a year full of events, Lan Su Chinese Garden will open Monday, January 2, through Monday, January 9, with no cost for admission. During the event, an offering of charming, spirit-lifting folk art will grace the walls of one of the pavilions and the Garden Shop will overflow into the garden with a dazzling display of Chinese New Year merchandise. The Year of the Dragon begins on Monday, January 23 and continues for 15 days. Lan Su is open every day 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. The cozy Teahouse keeps garden hours and reservations are not required.
Cultural note: In China, the word for eight sounds similar to the character meaning ʺprosperʺ or ʺwealth”. In regional dialects the words for eight and ʺfortune” are also similar. The number 8 is viewed as such an auspicious number that even being assigned a number with several eights is considered very lucky. The Beijing Olympics took place 8/8/08, the United Airlines Flight from San Francisco to Beijing
is flight 888 and many new buildings in China have 88 floors.
