“Portlandia: Where Quirk Works” Series @ Portland Central Library | Urban Chickens, Food Carts, & More
January 10, 2012 — PDXPIPELINEPortland’s Central Library will have several workshops beginning this Sunday celebrating “the things that make our city special” including Urban Chickens, Food Carts, and more. It’s sort of celebration of the Portlandia TV series that just started season 2 last week. The classes are free, but registration is required for the “Build Your Own Terrarium” class.

Sunday, January 15, 1-2:30PM: Raise Chickens in Your Backyard
As more and more people are beginning to raise their own food, chickens are becoming popular additions to the neighborhood. Join Craig Clark in learning the basics of raising happy, healthy chickens. Craig teaches Growing Gardens chicken keeping workshops and is part of the Zenger Farm chicken cooperative.
Sunday, January 29, noon-1:30PM: Build Your Own Terrarium
What is a terrarium? It is a miniature garden that you can grow inside of a glass container. Join professional gardener Melissa Richmond in building your own terrarium and learn about taking care of your new container garden. Registration required; register online, in the library or by calling 503.988.5234.
Sunday, February 12, 1-2:30PM: Gardens of Eatin’
Want to grow your own vegetables from seeds? Now is the time to plant! Join Metro Natural Gardening Educator Glen Andresen in learning the basics of growing a bountiful garden without toxic chemicals. This class will cover choosing edibles for the right spot and season, prepping the soil, weeding, and managing pests.
Sunday, February 26, 1-2:30PM: Portland’s Food Carts
From Korean tacos to New York pizza, Portland’s food carts are transforming the way we eat! Join Brett Burmeister, owner and managing editor of Food Carts Portland, to learn all about the history of Portland food carts as well as information for getting into the food cart business yourself.
