2012 Illahee Lecture Series w/ Chris Phillips @ First Congregational Church | Lecture On Rethinking Democracy

Wednesday, February 1
7 p.m. | $20 | All Ages
More Info: www.illahee.org

First Congregational Church
1126 SW Park Avenue

Illahee will examine several paradigms or practices - Sacred Cows - that are resistant to criticism or change; systems that deliver poor results for long periods of time, but somehow retain powerful ties to our society. It's hard to argue democracy, jobs, education, health care, and national defense aren't worthy of their sacred cow status, but when it comes to action, there's a fundamental disagreement on their purpose.

Christopher Phillips: ¬Å“As dysfunctional as people believe our government is, they are just as convinced that the Constitution still works. But does it?¬Â Energized by the optimism surrounding Obama’s presidency and concerned with the fierce partisanship infecting Congress, Phillips’ latest project is Constitution Cafe (2011), an effort to engage everyday Americans in constructive dialogue and debate about the nature of our government, the meaning of citizenship and our most important political documents.

Purchase a series pass that includes all lectures in the series ($79-179) or individual tickets ($20).

A non-profit organization, Illahee provides participants with practical tools for understanding the nature of our home here in the Pacific Northwest through science-based, policy-relevant environmental inquiry. Our focus is environmental issues, but environment is so interconnected with society, economics and culture, that we have to reach beyond environment when we explore issues. While our core mission is inquiry, the result has been a better-informed public that feels a sense of community and direction.
