CBS Films' Salmon Fishing in the Yemen opens the 35th Portland International Film Festival, on Thursday, February 9, the first of over 125 films from three-dozen countries. Over the last 35 years, the Festival has provided diverse and innovative films to an audience of more than 35,000 annually from throughout the Northwest.
One of the region’s most culturally diverse arts events, the Portland International Film Festival offers a broad mix of new international feature films, shorts, documentaries, and visiting artists, including submissions for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar and works by New Directors. The complete list of films will be announced January 24.
From the beloved director of Chocolat and the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Slumdog Millionaire comes the inspirational comedy Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. A visionary sheik (Amr Waked) believes his passion for the peaceful pastime of salmon fishing can enrich the lives of his people, and he dreams of bringing the sport to the not so fish-friendly desert.
Willing to spare no expense, he instructs his representative (Emily Blunt) to turn the dream into reality, an extraordinary feat that will require the involvement of Britain's leading fisheries expert (Ewan McGregor) who happens to think the project both absurd and unachievable. That is, until the Prime Minister's overzealous press secretary (Kristin Scott Thomas) latches on to it as a ¬Ëœgood will' story. Now, this unlikely team will put it all on the line and embark on an upstream journey of faith and fish to prove the impossible, possible. The film’s distributor, CBS Films, plans to release the film in Portland on March 23.
Following the screening at the Portland Center for the Performing Arts' Newmark Theatre (1111 SW Broadway Avenue) will be an Opening Night party-both inside and outside in the courtyard-at Nel Centro (1408 SW Sixth Ave) sponsored by Nel Centro, Hotel Modera and the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, with beverages provided from Pyramid Breweries and Firesteed Winery, and music from the jazz/swing band Swing Papillon.

The thumbnail image alone sold me. This film looks beautiful and an afterparty complete with a jazz/swing band sounds wild.

February 2, 2012 at 09:59
How could one not want to win tickets to this movie?AND an after-party? Yes, please….Big time Ewan McGregor fan and have seen both 127 Hours and Slumdog. Seems like a winning combination to me.
February 2, 2012 at 10:14
Sounds like a great date night AND the chance to see a great film by a talented director and a talented screenwriter, not to mention the bonus after-party!
February 2, 2012 at 10:21
Who wouldn’t want to go to this event?
Not only to see this beautiful work of art, but the chance to meet fellow film fiends afterwards make this contest a win-win.
February 2, 2012 at 11:04
Id love to attend this event. As a long time fan of Haalstroms directing ( cider house rules is 1 of my favorite films), I’d love the sneak preview of “Salmon Fishing..” I’m also a big fan of Salmon, so that’s gotta count for something, right.

I can rarely afford splurges for movies (and certainly not after-parties!), but that doesn’t mean I don’t still crave a little culture in my life. Help me to have a non-Netflix night out, PDX Pipeline! :-)
February 2, 2012 at 20:38
Because I live in the culture capital of the world -Utah, Yeah, there I said it and I sure as hell can’t fight my way to Sundance, 3rd trip to Portland and I love it. I may move here and drive an SUV and take up a lot of parking spaces….

February 3, 2012 at 09:03
Sounds like great fun, I have never been to a film festival
February 3, 2012 at 09:06
This is definitely something to tweet about. I will Facebook the Foursquare out of this event if I get to bring along the lovely lady I want to impress :) She dresses well and enjoys jazz – her attendance alone should be worth the ticket price in added class.
February 3, 2012 at 09:08
I am a film major, yo!
February 3, 2012 at 09:13
I have yet to be to a film festival…and I live in portland?

February 3, 2012 at 10:12
I’m pretty sure I won’t win, but if I do I promise to make it a salmon affair. From catching my dinner to watching the movie to dressing in costume. I’ll be all about it. As the good book says; “give a man a fish, he will be full for one meal, give him free tickets to salmon in yemen and he’ll never go hungry again”
February 3, 2012 at 10:29
PIFF rocks!

I love salmon! Almost as much as parties!
February 3, 2012 at 11:54
I’ve recently started a movie club for those of us who love creative storytelling, but hate to read…actually the only time I read is when I’m watching a foreign film. I want to celebrate my love for not reading at PIFF’s opening night.

February 4, 2012 at 11:50
I’m broke, injured from an accident off the job, and have developed a new found love in the language of Film during my recovery. My luck has to change and hopefully this is the turning point. I promise to enjoy this more than anyone else ever could!
February 4, 2012 at 14:28
The movie sounds very interesting. I’m interested in seeing to better understand what made it the pick for the opening night of the film festival. The after party sounds nice, too. Maybe a chance to talk with some people about the film, enjoy some drinks, and some music.
February 5, 2012 at 00:05
I was sad last year because I wasn’t able to see as much of the film festival as I would have liked. Can’t wait to get in on the action this time!
