Preview - Portland Trail Blazers vs Denver Nuggets:

By Cain Stoneking

Denver Nuggets (15-8) @ Portland Trailblazers (13-10)
Saturday, February 4th, 7:00pm KGW & NBATV

Game Notes: The Blazers lost another tough game on the road in which they only needed to have more energy and effort. After a really positive first half, they rope-a-doped themselves into a terrible second half and lost against the lowly Kings. They will look to bounce back in this three game home-stand. The good news is they are 10-1 at home. The bad news is they are going against a really good Denver Nuggets team followed by the Thunder who host the best record in the NBA. They follow that up with a game against at the Rockets, a team they already lost to.

First thing first though. The Nuggets host the second best record in the West. They do so without a superstar and probably without an all-star. They play great team basketball and are young. Those two aspects are the best things a team can ask for in a short season. The Nuggets have already lost in Portland once this season and will try their best not to lose again. They are also coming off a back-to-back in which they narrowly lost against the Lakers.

The Nuggets:

Starting Lineup: Ty Lawon, Aaron Afllalo, Nene Hilario, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov
Bench: Al Harrington, Andre Miller, Rudy Fernandez, Corey Brewer, Chris Andreson

X’s and O’s:

The Nuggets are a high scoring, high flying, fast paced team that loves to get out and run. The Blazers will have to get back on defense after missed shots and turnovers because the Nuggets can also shoot very well. In order to defeat this team, the Blazers must limit their turnovers and shoot at a high percentage themselves. Nene down low will be a hard cover for any Blazer but especially when Marcus Camby is out of the game. Look to see Aldridge try and defend him when Camby is resting. The other battle the Blazers will have to win is at the 3-point line. The Nuggets normally make a really nice living from there so the Blazers will have to make it a priority to defend against that and hopefully knock down some of their own.

Advantage Blazers:

The Blazers actually out-ran the Nuggets in their last matchup. This was mostly due to Raymond Felton pressuring the ball and getting out on the break. He’s had his best stretch as a Blazer the last couple of games so it would be great to see him back that up with another great game against his former team.

Last Words:

The Blazers need this game to makeup for the horrible loss on the road. With this win they would just be one game back for second place in their division. At the end of the season the Blazers are going to look back on games against their rivals either very fondly or very negatively. Here’s to hoping this one is fondly.

Games this week:
Oklahoma City – 6th
Houston – 8th
