After a one-album sojourn away from their band-built recording studio Philadelphia’s Dr. Dog returned home to Meth Beach to self-produce their latest collection of gloriously ramshackle rock ‘n’ roll reveries. Out February 7, Be The Void (Dr. Dog’s second release on Anti-Records) showcases the critically adored band’s renewed commitment to cultivating a stripped-down live sound.

“This record comes from our pushing toward a rawer, more powerful, somewhat jittery competence,” explains guitarist-vocalist Scott McMicken. “We drew a lot of inspiration from soul music and the Rolling Stones and the Velvet Underground-music that’s got its roots in live expression rather than that studio-perfected sort of vibe.”

Over the past seven years, The Monophonics have staked their claim as California's premier psychedelic soul band. Raised amid the Bay Area's rich musical culture, Monophonics has proudly carried on the tradition of music native to their hometown, which flourished during the birth of psychedelia.

The Monophonics were formed in 2005; originally an instrumental ensemble comprised of guitarist Ian McDonald, bassist Myles O'Mahony, saxophonist Alex Baky, trumpeter Ryan Scott, and drummer Austin Bohlman, the band has recently added the dynamic soul vocals of keyboardist Kelly Finnigan. The brand of Little Brother is one of the most recognizable names in hip hop. With both Phonte and 9th Wonder dropping LP's that lived up to the expectations that The Listening built eight years ago, Rapper Big Pooh finished off the year with Dirty Pretty Things. For Pooh, this is his moment to escape the Little Brother umbrella while adding to its legacy; Dirty Pretty Things is an ambitious effort in every regard.

Pooh refuses to cater to pack back or commercial audiences and instead creates a project that draws from both. At times it mimics its namesake and ventures away from its potential, but when it succeeds (¬Å“They Say¬Â or ¬Å“Right With You¬Â) it's as good as anything you'll hear all year. Portland Timbers Off-Season Report | Signings, Surgeries, Preseason Win

Portland Timbers 2012 SeasonBy Will Conwell

The Portland Timbers made another big acquisition last Monday with the signing of 28-year-old Scottish International Kris Boyd. Formerly of Kilmarnock and Rangers of the Scottish Premier League where he holds the record for most goals scored, Boyd is a classic goal scoring striker who the Timbers hope will more than replace Kenny Cooper, last year's leading goal scorer. With 173 goals in 335 career games as a professional, Boyd has the potential to be a force to be reckoned with in Major League Soccer.

Also added to the Timbers' roster last Tuesday was United States U-20 player Charles Renken. Renken, at only 18-years-old, has played both as a midfielder and fullback for club and country. After training with Hoffenheim of the German Bundisliga, Renken returns to the US as one of the most promising young players in the United States youth system. Held back in recent years by two knee surgeries, Renken still has huge potential.
