George Clinton is one of the foremost innovators of funk music, and was the mastermind behind the bands Parliament and Funkadelic. Clinton was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 with 15 other members of Parliament-Funkadelic.

Clinton started his career with the Parliaments, a barbershop doo-wop ensemble, which scored a major hit with “I Wanna Testify” in 1967. Clinton then began experimenting with harmonies, melody, and rhythm, and taking cues from the psychedelic movement, forever setting himself apart from the Motown era.

By the early 1970s, the group’s tight songs evolved into sprawling jams around funky rhythms. They dropped the “s” from the band name and Parliament was born. Around the same time, Clinton spawned Funkadelic, a rock group which fused psychedelic guitar distortion, bizarre sound effects, and cosmological rants with danceable beats and booming bass lines. Funkadelic recorded a number of influential concept albums, including Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow, Maggot Brain, and America Eats Its Young.

Parliament and Funkadelic captured 40 hit R&B singles, including No. 1 hits “Flashlight,” “One Nation Under a Groove,” “Aqua Boogie,” and “(Not Just) Knee Deep.” Clinton’s collaborators included keyboardist Bernie Worrell, guitarist Eddie Hazel, bassist Bootsy Collins, saxophonist Maceo Parker, trombonist Fred Wesley. On stage, spectacle ruled the day, with an enormous mothership, outrageous costumes, and marathon performances.

Clinton has become recognized as the godfather of modern urban music. Beats, loops, and samples of P-Funk have appeared on albums by OutKast, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliot, De La Soul, Fishbone, and many others. As Clinton has said, “funk is the DNA of hip-hop and rap.” In 1996, Clinton released the solo album The Awesome Power of a Fully Operational Mothership, which reunited him with Bernie Worrell and Bootsy Collins.

In 1997, Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Guitar Center’s Hollywood Rock Walk, and earned a Lifetime Achievement Award at the NAACP Image Awards. In 2002, Spin voted Parliament-Funkadelic No. 6 of the 50 Greatest Bands of All Time.

  2. David Moss March 12, 2012 at 13:48 #

I’ve never seen Clinton or Parliamment live, and I think I am less funky because of that. This could be a life-changing, ass-shaking, soul-liberating experience for me. Seriously.

  3. Sammy March 12, 2012 at 13:51 #

I’d like to win these tickets because my mom is the funk queen and I want to give her the tickets to meet her funk king. SHE DESERVES IT.

As a Katrina refugee I cannot express how happy I am when someone comes to town bringing the true funk! Nothing like some good ole nasty, raw, bass thumping funk to shake the dust off ya bones and warm up ya body!

  10. sherry March 12, 2012 at 14:36 #

we want the funk! give up the funk!

  11. Austin March 12, 2012 at 14:39 #

I want to see PFunk because it’s the musical connection I’ve had with my father since childhood and George Clinton’s been an inspiration to me and the music I make for years and years – I’ve never been able to see him perform before. Tickets through PDXPipeline would be the only way I could afford to take me and my SO at this moment in time.

  12. Errk March 12, 2012 at 14:46 #

Because funk not only moves, it can remove. And I have a world of unemployment ailments. Dig?

I want to get down this weekend!

  42. alan silver March 15, 2012 at 17:09 #

Golly. I’d love to travel back in time to the seventies and drench myself in the amazing and beautiful sounds that came out of funk and soul in those years. More than that, I’d really like to take my friend Jamilah to this show. She works her butt off on so many projects for her/our community, and music is not an escape for her, but a nourishment that feeds and sustains her.

  43. Cory Shird March 15, 2012 at 17:23 #

  55. Amilou March 15, 2012 at 19:13 #

I first heard of George Clinton as the producer of the RHCP’s second album, Freaky Styley. Then when I stumbled upon an unannounced show I was so lucky to experience George and the P-funk all stars live in Chicago in 1989. It was a funky transformation then and I know I need some more funk to liberate me now! It has been way too long!

  56. Sarah March 15, 2012 at 19:34 #

love his funky butt! i grew up on PCU where he did a cameo!

  57. Larry Blonsky March 15, 2012 at 19:44 #

What can I say? George is cool!

  58. Tiff Tap March 15, 2012 at 19:56 #

Parliament and Funkadelic were the soundtrack to my childhood. While my mom was in grad school I’d hang out with my dad and friends who also included Pedro Bell who designed the album covers and vibe to ‘Shouldn’t Have Bit Fish’ and ‘Knee Deep’. I think I was the only 4 year old who knew all the words to the songs. To this day I thank my dad for all the fun times hanging with the fellas and being exposed to true music at an early age. George Clinton in my is like a godfather to me (in my mind that is…)!! I’d love a chance to see him!

    ~One Nation Under A Groove!!

My husband and I are apart for valentines this year and we are expecting a baby girl in April. Before she arrives, it would be radical, funky, fresh to groove with Mr. George and the band and introduce our little one to real music in utero!!
