A Night To Remember
Saturday, April 14, 2012
6:30 reception | 7:40 film
$8 | All Ages
Hollywood Theatre
4122 NE Sandy Blvd.
April 15th, 1912 at 2:20 AM the heralded “Unsinkable” luxury liner The RMS Titanic sank to the bottom of the Atlantic after colliding with an iceberg. The loss of over 1500 lives made world news as the greatest maritime disaster in history. The tragedy of the sinking and it’s relation to human ego and folly has fascinated generations inspiring numerous authors, film makers and artists to create work about the the great ship and her doomed passage.
In commemoration of the Titanic Centennial Fleur de Lethal Cinematheque and The Hollywood Theater invite you to a rare screening of “A Night To Remember”. Made in 1958 this stunning film (which served as the main inspiration for James Cameron’s blockbuster) was adapted from the novel by Walter Lord. Masterfully restored by Criterion the film maintains being beautiful and moving while providing a straightforward telling of the disaster. (In fact, this is the only account of the sinking that does not deride in to fictional subplots).
We will be marking the exact time at Pacific Standard Time that the ship struck the iceberg and closing the event at the 100 years to the minute mark that the ship sank to her resting place. A lobby reception will open the festivities with refreshments for sale and a string quartet playing the music of the era.
Costumes and period dress are welcome and we encourage attendees to wear their finest ( living or dead) to join in the occasion.

The Titanic anniversary is this year and this event would be a great way to commemorate it. I would love to go!
My younger son, Ben, is about to turn 9 and is OBSESSED with shipwrecks. Of course Titanic is his number one. He can tell you any fact you want to know about the sinking. He knows what time the lights went out for good. He can tell you officers’ names. He knows minute details that possibly James Cameron doesn’t even know. My DVR is filled with Titanic-related shows from the Discovery Channel. He’s too young to see “Titanic” in 3D right now (no nude Winslet for my boys just yet, thanks), so this would be such a wonderful experience for him. He wanted to do “something special” to commemorate this major event, and winning these tickets would absolutely make it a night to remember for us both.
I wanna win. There’s my comment.
I wanna win above the 9 year old, I’ve known more about shipwrecks longer than he has cause I’m older. Just kidding, (not really). I did however forget to list my full name in case I win.
Would be an amazing event to celebrate a night off.
Lots of celebration of the Titanic lately, this would a fantastic remembrance.
I have been in a pretty serious relationship with water, quite literally, since the day I was born. Drinking her. Bathing in her. Since I’ve moved to Portland, she often just falls on my head. However, my relationship with water is starting to get a little stale. We’ve done just about all there is for a couple to do. All but be involved in a shipwreck that is. I just know that going to this event is exactly what water and I need to spark our relationship back to what it once was. Well, I’m off to the water cooler for couples’ therapy. Wish me luck.
Please please pretty please?! I would truly appreciate this night as I have been involved many shipwrecks in my life. Trainwrecks too.
Its good work if you can get it.
I’m sure this will be far better than the melodramtic Jame’s Cameron version and the unneccesary 3D re-release. (and I’m a sucker for old films)
Who with me to be zombie survivors?!
My boyfriend is fascinated with the event and it would be so interesting to experience this sort of re-enactment of it. We would love it and dress up! How exciting!
I have this “sinking” feeling that you may not pick me as the prizewinner. However, I am a history buff and a student of the human condition, and would love to see the reasons behind the sinking and the reactions to it. This appears to be a very worthwhile documentary.
Sounds like a blast! My folks tell me we had relatives on the Titanic. Would love to learn more about this fascinatingly tragic event from what sounds like a great film, (I opted out of seeing Cameron’s movie). A great evening wrapped up as a night on the town complete with snazzy duds, and spiffy tunes… why wouldn’t I want to go… for free!
I really want to win these tix!! My family moved here from Ireland, so I have relatives who not only helped build the Titanic, but who died after being trapped in the engine rooms during its sinking. I want to go for my grandmother who is too ill attend and memorialize them in a small way so my great uncles memory isn’t forgotten. Thank you.
all week on opb i’ve been boning up on my titanic knowledge. time to put it to use (and see how interpretations have changed due to modern science and her discovery).
My wife and I saw Titanic 3D last week.
