With a motto to “Drink Organic, Save the Planet, One Beer at a Time,” the North American Organic Brewers Festival will host its eighth annual event June 29 through July 1 at Portland’s Overlook Park. More than 18,000 beer lovers are expected to gather at the event, billed as the nation’s most earth-friendly beer festival.

Designed to raise awareness about organic beer and sustainable living, the NAOBF serves up more than 60 organic beers and cider from 39 different breweries. Styles run the gamut from Belgian Whites to Cascadian Darks, offering something for every palate. There’s also live local music, organic food, sustainability-oriented vendors and non-profits, a soda garden with complimentary Crater Lake Root Beer for minors and designated drivers, and a children’s area with face painting and activities. The NAOBF is a family friendly event, and minors are welcome with parents.

“While this is a beer festival, we’re also raising awareness about the environment,” explained diretor Craig Nicholls. “Events generate a lot of waste, and we’re doing our part to minimize that. Last year, we kept nearly 90% of the 2,300 pounds of waste generated from going into the landfill through recycling and composting efforts, and this year we’re striving for an even better rate.”

The NAOBF is sustainable in a number of ways: festival attendees sample beer from reusable and compostable cornstarch glasses made from domestically grown corn by a zero-waste, solar-powered company. Onsite composting and recycling stations are provided for festival waste and are supervised by recycling czars. Food vendors are required to use compostable cutlery and plates and employ sustainable practices. Electricity needs are met with a combination of biodiesel and solar generators. Volunteers wear organic cotton and hemp t-shirts, and all event signage is reusable.

Event hours are Noon to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and Noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Admission into the event is free.

The purchase of a $6 reusable, compostable cornstarch glass is required for tasting beer, as are tokens, which sell for $1 apiece. A full glass of beer or cider costs four tokens and a four-ounce taste costs one token; select beers cost double tokens.

Patrons receive a $1 discount toward the tasting glass with a validated MAX ticket, a ticket from the onsite Hopworks bike corral – last year, nearly 2,000 attendees parked their bikes at the festival – or three cans of food for the Oregon Food Bank (limit one discount per person). The NAOBF benefits the Leukemia Lymphoma Society and the Oregon Food Bank.

Why an organic beer festival?
Studies show that the world’s population currently consumes 30% more natural resources than the Earth’s ecosystems can replenish. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, commercial agriculture is accountable for 70% of the pollution in our country’s rivers and streams. Genetically modified ingredients can be found in nearly every grocery store.

The NAOBF believes that education and exposure leads to awareness, and awareness can translate to passion. If everyone becomes passionate about sustainability, as a whole we can make the planet a cleaner and healthier place for all of us to habitat. If the conversation starts with an organic beer, that’s even better! For more information visit naobf.org.

I want to try more organic beers.

  2. Garrett Zimmer June 19, 2012 at 16:52 #

I’ve gone every year I’ve lived here (4) and find it to be the most enjoyable of all the beer festivals. Reasonable lines, great setting, original music, and better food than all the rest.

  3. Tammie Olson June 19, 2012 at 16:53 #

I would love to win this package for my husband! He works really long hours at a very stressful job! He deserves this! Thank you

  4. Ron June 19, 2012 at 16:54 #

I want to go to beer fest wow
Never been to one yet, would love to not to mention I’m totally into organic products and organic beer?????
That has to be incredible, never tasted organic beer and would love the opportunity for something new- this sounds incredible not to say sounds like a great fun time as well as a learning and educating experience.

  5. Katherine June 19, 2012 at 16:56 #

Beer is magical. Green beer (and not the swill you get at St. Patty’s Day) is magical and good for you. The FDA says so I swear. So I’d like to take my husband and partake of the wonderful elixir that is organic beer.

  6. Michael Israel June 19, 2012 at 16:57 #

I have rabid organic beer drinking dogs living in my belly and I need to feed them soon.

  7. Jessica June 19, 2012 at 17:21 #

    The perfect anniversary date!!

  11. Patrick June 19, 2012 at 17:55 #

Free organic beer is the BEST beer!

  12. Irina June 19, 2012 at 18:12 #

The last beer festival I attended was around 2001, when I took my parents. We were just reminiscing about it the other day and would love to win this package to help pay for our first organic beer festival.

  13. Travis June 19, 2012 at 18:18 #

Because I drink loads of brew and have never been to a Portland beer festival yet since I moved here and this would be the absolute SHIT to go to. So please pick me!!

  14. Leonard June 19, 2012 at 18:46 #

    Yay organic brew!

  15. Lisa June 19, 2012 at 18:56 #

  19. Liberty Martinez June 19, 2012 at 21:20 #

Went last year. What a great time!

  20. Neal June 19, 2012 at 21:26 #

As a child, I found a frog near a stream. Knowing this frog would be my friend for life, I decided to take him home. The only container I could find was an empty beer can. One of those awful light beers the color of water that’s been sitting in a bird bath for far too long. When I got home, I discovered that the frog was dead. Could it have been the fact that it was too hot that day or was it the fact that there was still a bit of beer in the can and he probably absorbed some nasty GMO swill through his skin. We’ll never know. But by attending this event, I will help to avenge Froggy McRibbit’s untimely death.

  21. Megan June 19, 2012 at 21:30 #

I think Captain Planet would approve, and who doesn’t approve of Captain Planet?

  22. AriH June 19, 2012 at 22:17 #

This is my favorite beer festival in Portland! Would love love love to win tix for this!

I love saving the world and I love organic beer! Please hook me up! :)

  26. Nina L June 20, 2012 at 09:07 #

Since we just moved to Portland, this would be a great festival to attend. We really enjoy beer and love the organic component.

  27. Eric June 20, 2012 at 09:38 #

As a broke college student, I have attended the event but strictly to work the event in order to acquire the cup and the ‘few’ tickets that come with volunteering. I have done this the past two years and would instead love to get the full experience without the day labor first! Heck, maybe I’ll volunteer for a different day regardless just to keep my streak going!

    Cheers,
    Eric

  28. Mike June 20, 2012 at 09:39 #

My wife and I just had a baby, she’s been abstaining from alcohol consumption, and she misses the taste of beer.

  29. Jadd June 20, 2012 at 10:36 #

I’d take my friend Nic. We’re both from ORG.

    Enough said.

  30. Jon June 20, 2012 at 10:42 #

I would love to go because I’ve recently returned from living in New Zealand for four years and need to get reacquainted with GREAT BEER!!!

  31. Kate June 20, 2012 at 10:45 #

This is my favorite brew fest!

  32. Ross June 20, 2012 at 10:56 #

Portland is begging me to go to this beer fest. Everytime I attend, it is sunny. It will not be sunny this year unless I go :)

  33. kristen June 20, 2012 at 12:08 #

i recently moved to Oregon from NC. There have been many adjustments that i have had to make thus far, and my boyfriend just broke the news to me that Milwaukee’s Best isn’t organic…can you help teach me the ropes of this organic beer goodness he speaks of?

  34. Letani June 20, 2012 at 12:10 #

This is by far my favorite beer festival! I’ll be going regardless of whether or not I win free tickets, but it sure would be nice to have a bunch of extra money to spend on more tokens!

  35. Heather R June 20, 2012 at 12:17 #

This is great festival and we take a group over from work every year since it’s right in our backyard but having extra tokens would indeed be fantastic! :]

  36. AnneB June 20, 2012 at 12:19 #

This is my favorite Portland beer festival but I never have enough tokens to check out all the beers I want to try. If I win, problem solved!

  37. Kenny Schmidt June 20, 2012 at 13:13 #

Heineken? FUCK THAT SHIT, (organic) PABST BLUE RIBBON!!

  38. Marie June 20, 2012 at 13:19 #

I would like to surprise my husband with the tickets. He loves trying new beers alond with enjoying his old portland favorites. Look forward to seeing you all there! Thank you!

  39. Brenda June 20, 2012 at 15:03 #

This is a fun festival — always something new to be tasted, so the more tokens the better.

  40. Sam June 20, 2012 at 15:13 #

To take my cousin from MN

  41. Casey June 20, 2012 at 17:04 #

I don’t know if I have tried many organic beers and this would be a great event to expand my beer repertoire.

  42. Bennett June 20, 2012 at 18:13 #

Rock, rock, to the planet hop…. Don’t stop

  43. barbara June 21, 2012 at 10:30 #

I work right next to Overlook Park, it’s right on the Max line. I would love to kick off summer at this festival. Summer starts in July in Oregon!

  44. Nicole June 21, 2012 at 12:00 #

Beer, beer, give me da’ beer.

  45. Steph June 21, 2012 at 13:06 #

The best and the only summer beer festival that I go to!

  46. Jessica June 21, 2012 at 13:12 #

I want to win because we’re coming down all the way from Seattle to attend and gas is expensive! Winning the mug and tokens would help offset the cost of gas to get there! We’ve been before and it’s a great festival and we love all things organic!

  47. Mary Liz June 21, 2012 at 13:17 #

I hate to brag, but I happen to be extremely good a drinking beer. In Portland, with all its fancy microbrews and underground homebrewers, I often find people focusing on the beer and the brewers, rather than the true champs; the beer drinkers. It’s not often that I get to drink beer with hundreds of people, since most bars can only hold so many, and my wallet is a bit too skinny for large stadium concerts and Timbers games, so this seems like a perfect opportunity to join my fellow drinkers and indulge. I do a great drunken ramble and can always make my way to a Honey Bucket in time to spare myself from public humiliation, while still managing to (endearingly, hopefully) embarrass myself with my conversations just enough to make friends.

  48. Erika June 21, 2012 at 13:24 #

I want to see your “O-face!” Organic Beer at Overlook Park face, that is! I really LOVE Beer ;)

*P.S. I think the math problem below is a good sign: I’m a middle school math teacher that just started summer break… and I could really use a free beer.

  49. Greg Valdez June 21, 2012 at 13:29 #

As a long-time home brewer, I would love to learn about sustainable, organic brewing practices and products.

  50. Robin June 21, 2012 at 13:41 #

It’s for a GREAT cause – supports LLS and my belly :)

    Beer Good…

  51. sikoya June 21, 2012 at 13:46 #

  52. Julia June 21, 2012 at 14:01 #

  53. Ryan June 21, 2012 at 14:08 #

    We responded with deafening cheers,

Just moved to Portland last month and can’t believe how good the beer is here! Viva la PDX!

  57. jamie stewart June 21, 2012 at 14:31 #

How many coconuts would you have if you took 4000 pieces paper and divided it by the square root of Crater Lake with a dash of something else?
    Who cares?
    Drink beer!!

  58. Benito June 21, 2012 at 14:43 #

I am 100% organic beer. It’s only natural that I be chosen for this. :D

  59. Brian June 21, 2012 at 15:14 #

I’d love to go and try some new organics

  60. Ben Gaskill June 21, 2012 at 15:15 #

  64. Kyle June 21, 2012 at 15:18 #

Because this video is funny: http://giagantor.com/2010/01/24/japanese-human-powered-jetpack/

  65. Gary June 21, 2012 at 15:19 #

I want to pair the best organic beers on the planet with the best organic foods and blog about the sublime experience.

  66. Leigha June 21, 2012 at 15:19 #

Because I’m stuck teaching night classes all week and will need something to indulge in over the weekend! This is one of the few beerfests that I have yet to check out- plus, it’s would be a great opportunity to try more organic beers.

  67. Jenny June 21, 2012 at 15:21 #

Organic farming & beer, 2 of my favorite things!

  68. sam June 21, 2012 at 15:23 #

Because a few beers would help me think of more clever things to say now………….

  69. Tim June 21, 2012 at 15:25 #

I haven’t explored the “organic” beer selections. This would be a good time to try some. I would appreciate tickets!!

  70. Katy June 21, 2012 at 15:26 #

Last year the guy I liked went to this event and told me how much fun he had. This year we’re a couple and we’re excited to go together!

  71. Brooke June 21, 2012 at 15:26 #

The BEST beer fest Portland offers!!

  72. Josh June 21, 2012 at 15:26 #

This is no doubt, hands down the worst brewfest in Portland. The kegs are tapped early, upon buzzing, Beavertron meat heads start screaming uncontrollably while holding their cups in the air like they just won some kind of prize, calling to other Beavertron meat heads throughout the event with their ancient, primal howls and lines that stretch for what seems to be miles which you must stand in to get your 2nd beer as soon as your 1st is poured. It’s terrible.
BUT… if you go early, on a Friday, then it’s not so bad. If I win, I would go then.

  73. Lisa June 21, 2012 at 15:27 #

I’ve only had one organic beer in my life, and as a beer LOVER, that’s simply a shame and something that must be fixed!

  74. Angie June 21, 2012 at 15:29 #

I’m new to the area and would love to participate in this conmunity event. It would be a fun way to get to know people and regional offerings.

  75. Nola Borland June 21, 2012 at 15:29 #

Life is just one beer at a time…local, organic, and amazing. Just let me at em….one at a time!! and then the ciders….one at a time. Love it!! Please send me!!

  76. Roger June 21, 2012 at 15:30 #

    Whoohoo! Organic beer!

  77. Bonnie June 21, 2012 at 15:31 #

It’s fun and a great showcase for the hard work organic brewers put into their product and supports organic growers. Few people understand what it takes to produce organic foods. This is one event that helps spread that information. Plus, having some brews with my hubby would really help my life.

  78. Brock June 21, 2012 at 15:33 #

    Portland’s first summer beer festival.

  79. Andrew June 21, 2012 at 15:33 #

I dedicated the last fifteen years of my life to preventing Monsanto from making beer. Okay, so I lost. But at least the superhero Captain Hops and I fought the good fight. What were you doing? Rewarding super heroes with free tickets? Excellent, we accept!

  80. sarah June 21, 2012 at 15:33 #

  87. Melinda Griffin June 21, 2012 at 15:41 #

I would love to win this!!! I have only been to Eugene’s Oregon Blues and Brew’s Festival and would really like to expand my knowledge and taste for organic beers. I am very supportive of buying locally, buying organic and growing organic. It’s so much healthier than the other crap out there! Winning these tickets would be a blessing!!!

  88. Tonya June 21, 2012 at 15:42 #

Because I haven’t won anything from you guys yet and this would be the perfect thing to do!

  89. Ande June 21, 2012 at 15:42 #

  91. BobGuy June 21, 2012 at 15:48 #

My company is sending me to the middle of nowhere NC for a year. This would be the perfect send off. I promise to drink enough beer to hold me over until I get back to Portland!

  99. Rebecca June 21, 2012 at 16:08 #

I can walk home from this beer fest, no drinking and driving or even biking for me!

  100. Jessie June 21, 2012 at 16:15 #

Hi! Pick me! This is one of THE coolest and best organized beerfests and I truly love it each year!

  101. emily June 21, 2012 at 16:18 #

I love beer and I cannot afford to go if I don’t win free tickets.

  102. Michele June 21, 2012 at 16:19 #

Woo hoo! Pick me! My son is with his Dad this weekend so I can check it out for once!

  103. Patrick June 21, 2012 at 16:32 #

Choose me b/c I loves me some fresh, chemically free brews!!

(and I never complained about noise or smoke coming into my window when I lived in the apt above you)

  104. kalianne June 21, 2012 at 16:38 #

This has been my favorite Portland event since I moved to Portland three years ago. I would love to have the luxury of trying more beers this year but will be attending regardless of me winning. :)

  105. Carina June 21, 2012 at 16:41 #

I just want to do my part to help “save the planet one beer at a time.”

  106. Brian June 21, 2012 at 16:42 #

Oh wow, not just organic beers from some of the best Portland brewers ever, but vegan chow as well? Now that’s unusual. I would absolutely love to try this fest, but could never afford to do so on my own dime.

  107. Kathleen June 21, 2012 at 16:43 #

I love this brewfest! Conveniently (and safely) located right on the Max line, and showcasing not only awesome organic beers but also the unpretentious vibe of North Portland itself.

I go each and every year and will be there with requisite bells on again this year. Can’t wait! Free tickets would be the cream cheese frosting on this delicious carrot cupcake.

  108. Emmy June 21, 2012 at 16:59 #

We’re moving into the area that weekend and it would be a great way to start off in our new pdx neighborhood!

  109. allison June 21, 2012 at 17:01 #

This mama needs some organic beer.

  110. Amy June 21, 2012 at 17:02 #

This event is the best way to discover new organic beers that I may not otherwise get to. I’d be enthusiastically grateful to win tickets to this brewfest!

  111. Kim June 21, 2012 at 17:14 #

Like I always say… Drink one beer, got to try them all!

  112. Lindsey June 21, 2012 at 17:20 #

Because I love beer, but I’m too poor this year to go without the help of winning this contest!

  113. Cory Shird June 21, 2012 at 17:23 #

    Beer is good

  114. Joe June 21, 2012 at 17:24 #

Last year my prego wife won tickets and took me as a ‘last hurrah’. This year, i would love to win tickets and take the whole family (baby included) out for some family fun.

  115. Christina June 21, 2012 at 17:29 #

    Nothing better than organic beer!

  116. David Stone June 21, 2012 at 17:30 #

I would REALLY like to go to this festival. Every year something comes up that I don’t get to go and if I could win this package it would be my opportunity to make it there. I’d really love to sample the organic brews that are in the market right now. Please pick me. It would mean so much to get to go.

  117. Stu June 21, 2012 at 17:33 #

    Love this festival.

  118. Sara Kelly June 21, 2012 at 17:39 #

This summer my husband and I will celebrate our son’s first birthday. This means a year of poopy diapers, sleepless nights, and drinking amazing local beers in the middle of the night, when he is asleep and we can be grown ups. For his birthday, give him happy parents. We’d love the day to discover new brews and act like adults during daylight hours :)

  119. Emily June 21, 2012 at 17:43 #

I would love to go to this! I’ve been to most all the local beer fests except this one:( Lets change that! :) Please? Pretty please?!

  120. Trev June 21, 2012 at 17:52 #

This will be last weekend in my beloved stumptown before moving back east where the beer pales in comparison, so do me a solid and send me out like a champ!

  121. bc June 21, 2012 at 18:05 #

I like my beer pesticide free!

  122. Nicki H June 21, 2012 at 18:11 #

Planning to leave work early Friday to play designated driver for work pals at the festival. Winning would mean spending the extra money on cabs and getting to actually sample the beer!

  123. Krista June 21, 2012 at 18:14 #

I blame my parents on my love of beer – I was born in Germany and my parents used to dip my pacifier in beer. ;)

  124. Lindsay June 21, 2012 at 18:22 #

Yes!! My birthday is July 1. I will win tickets to the Organic Beer Festival, and drink in all the happy birthday love. Cheers!

  125. Vanessa June 21, 2012 at 18:52 #

It would be nice to celebrate the ending of my first year of grad school with some tasty beers. It would be even nicer if I got passes for free since I’m a broke grad student.

  126. Nick c. June 21, 2012 at 19:13 #

I love beer fests and I love organics this is one of my favorite beer fests and I should win these tickets to go because I will put them to good use!

  127. Maya June 21, 2012 at 19:35 #

Summertime is like beer thirty non-stop anyways, so what better way to legitimize the whole thing.

  128. Evan June 21, 2012 at 20:25 #

I need something to bribe my friends with. :D

  129. Liz June 21, 2012 at 21:04 #

Hola! I’ve lived here 8ish months and haven’t been to a beer festival yet. I tried to read everyone else’s comments and it seems people love this festival the most. Pick Mary Liz to win. I liked her reasons the most. Maybe she can take me as her beer drinking wingman?!?!

  130. Sarah June 21, 2012 at 21:05 #

This sounds like so much fun!

  131. Tim D June 21, 2012 at 21:22 #

    wow, lots of good posts.
but it’s our anniversary, and my better half insists I take her out to something good/different. this would certainly qualify. in the name of love and good post-beer-fest relations, I beg of you to award us those tix!

  149. Shayla June 22, 2012 at 09:16 #

I went last year and had a great time enjoying the music and some sun! I was also super prego and only got to enjoy rootbeer. This year I want to bring the baby to this family friendly event, he can play under the big tree and I can have some yummy organic brews.

  170. Erik June 22, 2012 at 19:17 #

I’ve volunteered for NAOBF 2 years in a row and really enjoy pouring good, original, organic beer for my fellow Portlanders. The coordinators are very kind to their volunteers and treat them well (free tokens, etc)!

  171. Barrett June 22, 2012 at 19:24 #

This is my favorite beer festival because organic beer needs more attention, even in Portland. Not just for your health, but the environment’s.

  172. Chris F June 22, 2012 at 22:30 #

I think it would truely a pleasure to take part in celebrating the earth’s survival while also drinking the most delicious brews available and where else to do it then in the microbrew Mecca of the world! If good people keep on keeping up thegood fight then there is no doubt the future will be much brighter, if not also, much greener!!! :)

  173. Taylor June 23, 2012 at 10:06 #

  186. Joseph Keebler June 24, 2012 at 07:50 #

  194. Blair June 25, 2012 at 12:30 #

Coming down to Portland for the weekend from Vancouver, BC to see all the good green things going on in Portland. Adding a MAX ride to an outdoor beer festival would be a real treat!

I see organic is very popular and I would love to be a part of this exciting experience. I feel organic is a valuble way of life that we all need to learn and expericence to truly apperciate what it does for us AND our bodies. Not to mention the community :) Congrats to North American Organic Brewers Festival!!

  201. Carmel June 26, 2012 at 11:25 #

    Because beer is delicious.

  202. Pauline June 26, 2012 at 14:46 #

On a day not too far away, I would like to drink a beer the color of my suntanned ear. And if I drink any more, my doctor says it will cure my snore.

  203. Lyn brese June 26, 2012 at 21:37 #

  207. Manda June 28, 2012 at 17:02 #

I’d like to win tickets because my boyfriend is both broke and a beer snob (and a home brewer), and it would be great to take him there! And because I am not in general a beer fan but keep discovering some beers that I like, and it would be cool to try new things.

  208. Sara June 28, 2012 at 17:11 #

There is nothing more “Portland” than drinking organic, micro-brewed beer, eating a veggie soy dog and listening to music form local bands. I wouldn’t miss it.

  209. heather June 28, 2012 at 19:10 #

I’m going anyway to take notes on how to make an event “zero waste” so that I can use that info at events in Washington County – however it would be cool to get some free beer in the process……yes it would

  210. Travis June 29, 2012 at 08:12 #

Because I don’t want to go dehydrated this weekend. Im flat out broke and dyin of thirst here!

  211. Whitney June 29, 2012 at 10:52 #

As the wise Homer* once said, “Homer no function beer well without.”

*Simpson of course. That other Homer was a hack.

  212. Dawn June 26, 2013 at 10:58 #

My husband and I homebrew and love to try new beers. Plus, I love the Earth-friendly education for my kids. We practice recycling, composting, and buy organic when we can. What a great event!
