David Kern is a hapless waiter who toils his days away in a chic cafe. He falls in love with an attractive customer named Marie, but she unfortunately does not acknowledge his well intentioned gestures of adoration. Fate intervenes when he buys a table at a flea market and discovers a manuscript for a book in one of its drawers.
It turns out to be a romantic tale that moves him deeply, so in a final attempt to win Marie, he plagiarizes the work as his own and indeed wins her over when he pretends to be original author. Falling for the story more so than substance, Marie falls in love with David and their relationship blossoms. Marie, without David’s consent, sends the manuscript to a publisher who quickly transforms it into a bestseller. Suddenly thrust into the world of celebrity David struggles with keeping up the ruse. David’s new found celebrity status turns into a living nightmare when the real author makes his presence known.
