Skillshare, the community marketplace that makes it easy for anyone to teach and take classes, announced today that they are expanding their presence to Portland.

As of today, any local can sign up to teach workshops to others in the community through Skillshare. Local Skillshare classes meet offline and in-person, where students come together to learn real-world skills ranging from entrepreneurship to crafting to cooking. Anyone with experience and knowledge to share can teach a class, and any place can be a classroom — a co-working space, coffee shop, garage or conference room.

Classes on Skillshare range in price, which is set by the teacher, but tend to cost around $30 per class. In general, Skillshare classes are orders of magnitude cheaper than their traditional equivalents at big universities and education centers. Skillshare also offers Hybrid classes, which combine project-based, online learning with in-person workshops, allowing students to collaborate and learn with others around the globe.

Skillshare began as a way for communities to share local knowledge by teaching and taking classes on everything from programming to entrepreneurship to cooking. The most vibrant local communities include New York City, where Skillshare is headquartered, and San Francisco. To celebrate, members of the Skillshare team, including west coast Community Development Manager Helena Price and Founder/CEO Mike Karnjanaprakorn, will be hosting a happy hour on September 18th, which you can RSVP to here.

To recommend Portland teachers or venues to be a part of the Skillshare community or learn more about how you can get involved, please contact helena@skillshare.com. To receive updates on Portland classes, visit Skillshare.com, or follow Skillshare on Facebook and Twitter.

As a lifelong learner, I would be stoked to have access to these classes. “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at 20 or 80. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.” –Henry Ford

  16. Rebecca August 24, 2012 at 01:29 #

I love learning interesting, crafty, athletic, culinary, artsy….okay I love learning anything.. So many things I would be interested to teach a class on, but seems like most crafts, culinary arts, artistic, are pretty much covered. Maybe how to throw good parties. Not Martha Stewart style, but cool, fun, quirky, chill style. Students could practice by a group project on creating a cool party and inviting all their friends.

There’s no better way to learn than by doing. And learning to do something new with others seems to be more fun in my opinion.
