There are five words slipped into the middle of ‘Night and Day’ – the hyper-infectious, propulsive track that comes halfway through Hot Chip’s fifth album – that in many ways sum up what’s In Our Heads. Somewhere between the fizzing percussion and the relentless and addictive bassline, a processed voice intones the line, “I like Zapp not Zappa”.
Although the Alexis Taylor penned words were written primarily as a reaction to ill-informed requests during the frontman’s DJ gigs, if viewed as a statement of intent for the record as a whole they speak volumes. They seem to say this record is playful yet unburdened by extraneous fuss or showiness. That this is a joyous record aimed squarely at the heart and at the heart of the dancefloor.
It’s an ideology that seems to subliminally seep through the rest of the tracks on In Our Heads. You can hear it on the opening track – ‘Motion Sickness’ – where the track seems to dizzily modulate one step ahead of the listener with every four bar loop and on ‘How Do You Do’, a celebration of the joy of life itself stretched over a backing track that sounds like a Chicago house record reinforced with titanium. It’s there throughout the seven-something minutes of ‘Flutes’ in the chopped up rhythmic chant that runs through the heart of it while the rhythm track crackles like electrical cables in heavy weather and it’s in the ocean deep melancholy of the gorgeous ‘Look At Where We Are’. It’s there in the utterly ecstatic wordless chorus of ‘Let Me Be Him’. And it’s there on the constantly evolving, Abbey Road-esque ballad ‘Now There Is Nothing’. In fact, it’s there right through the middle of In Our Heads, helping to forge something akin to the perfect synthesis of electronics and live instrumentation, a place where Alexis’ beautifully soulful vocals sit as perfectly on liquid R&B backing tracks as on songs that sound like Prince beaming back from the 31st century.

I love Hot Chip, and yet I have never seen them live! This weekend is also my girlfriend’s birthday, and while she’s the biggest Yacht fan I know, we can’t really find room in the budget right now to buy tickets.
why do I want to go?
I want to take my friend Annie and have her shake her ass to some good soul music.
Love me some Hot Chip. would love to see this. Havent been to a show in a few months.
I want to attend because Hot Chip are awesome, but the tickets areexpensive. Please pick me.
Love this band, saw this at Coachella many years ago and their live show is legendary. Would love to see them at the Crystal with their new sound system.
I want to dance my face off to Hot Chip!!
Edward Sharpe, Crosby Stills and Nash, …..Hot Chip?! Let’s keep this concert wagon rolling, I’m on a music high!
SOunds dope. I want to go!
I’ve been playing Hot Chip on my mobile sound system mixes for the past three pedalpaloozas, and when they come on, it always ups the ride. Picture a couple hundred happy people on tallbikes, freakbikes, fur-covered bikes, riding the streets at night with One Life Stand putting smiles on everyone’s faces. I’d love to see the people who make my summers so fun.
I would love this.
I’d so love to see this show! I’ve never been able. Please make it possible!!
I love YACHT!
I am a dancin’ fool and would give anything to bust my moves to Hot Chip.
Upon winning tickets to Hot Chip I would strip naked, roll in the grass all while holding my cat as a censor to the neighborhood children. But this is nothing more than a Tuesday night, weirding it up.
I would like to attend because I love Hot Chip and I love to dance!
I want to dance my leedle arse off!
ever since a friend turned me onto them, I’ve been hooked. it would be great to get to see them in concert!
I promise to bring someone with me who is normally has cement in their shoes when it comes to getting their groove on. It will literally be impossible for them not to bust out their best, albeit awkward, moves for these two bands!
I just moved into a new place a couple months ago. When my roommate was telling me the code to open the garage door, Hot Chip was playing in her car. Now every time I want to get my bike out, it takes me a few seconds to recall what song was playing (One Life Stand), then I quietly hum the chorus while punching in the code to its rhythm. Given how often I need to get my bike, Hot Chip is in my head a lot and I’d love to see them live.
Love them but I’m broke!
Its going to be a killer show!
I would love to see this show. YACHT is such an awesome band (Portland natives!) and Hot Chip is a great dance act as well. I totally forgot to buy tickets. Here’s hoping I get lucky ;)
Hot Chip was the highlight of my Voodoo Fest entire experience in New Orleans in 2010. I have been dreaming of them coming to Portland since, and the day has finally come! “Take It In” remains at the top of our household love song playlist. Can hardly wait to get my dance on to them tonight!
I hope I’m not too late for the drawing! Hot Chip and Yacht are going to be insane as always!
I first heard Hot Chip on KCRW a few years back! Must see them live!!!! This is just the beginning of my one life stand:)
