The Freak Mountain Ramblers present a unique blend of Rock ‘n Roll, Bluegrass, Alternative Country, and Country Blues. With a lineup including 3 members of the inimitable and notorious Holy Modal Rounders/ Clamtones amalgamation of the ’70s and ’80s, FMR has its roots in the underbelly of the alternative music scene that existed at that time both in Portland and across the country.

During the past 7 years the Freaks have accumulated a loyal following in the Portland area by dependably creating beauty and bedlam at their live shows, and by producing four CDs that successfully translate that energy and excitement to disk. Unlike any other band in the Pacific Northwest, FMR presents a show where the spotlight rotates among 5 lead singer/songwriters, each with his own distinct character and approach to life and music. The 6th member is a veteran drummer with his own tale to tell, and even an occasional song to sing.

Jackstraw formed in 1997 when rhythm guitarist Darrin Craig and lead player Jon Neufeld met mandolin picker David Pugh and bassist Jesse Withers at Artichoke Music, a Portland guitar store. Six records and 14 years later, the band has toured throughout the United States, playing roadhouses, clubs, listening rooms and festivals.

Along the way, they’ve shared bills with bluegrass greats such as Del McCoury and Tim O’Brien and welcomed legends like Danny Barnes and Tony Furtado as temporary band mates. The band’s devoted following includes bluegrass purists, altcountry fans, kids looking to dance, and people who know a good tune when they hear one. Jackstraw has developed a reputation over the years for their impeccable musicianship and hard-driving original songs.

Interesting write-up on Freak Mountain. I’ve been seeing these fellas for the past 10 years and not sure if I’d call them “rock-n-roll”. I think they are something much cooler, like “rock-n-jam”! Excited to get shakin’ at the Foot again on Saturday. And hopefully PDX Pipeline would like to pay for my drinks! :-)

Good ol’ American tunes in a ramblin’ bluegrass style! I love it and the venue and will gladly be there. Could use the financial help those because Steve Kimock tickets for Friday are expensive!

Freak Mountain is one of the more jammin’ bluegrass bands around town. They always put on a great show and can get feet on the dance floor. Goodfoot is, of course, one of the best venues in town to catch live music. I’d love it if you picked me out of the hat (or Sean, because I feel kind of bad that he can’t count…)
