During the weekend of the Academy Awards, the Portland Chamber Orchestra will perform scores from Oscar-nominated films. The concerts will be hosted by movie music expert, Edmund Stone. Two performances are planned in the Portland Metro area:

At the February 23rd concert, the PCO will also honor legendary conductor, arranger and clarinetist, Norman Leyden. Several arrangements by Leyden – including the theme from Laura, “Colonel Bogey’s March” and “Moon River” – will be performed. Singer Susannah Mars will also be featured. A pre-concert fundraiser with silent auction will be held starting at 5:30pm. Tickets for the fundraiser at the Scottish Rite Center are available at the Portland Chamber Orchestra website.

The concert will feature selections from cinema classics, including West Side Story, Bridge over the River Kwai, The Magnificent Seven, and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Music from more recent films will include Schindler’s List, Cinema Paradiso, Star Trek and several James Bond films.

Portland Chamber Orchestra’s Artistic Director Yaacov Bergman selected the music with Edmund Stone. Stone hosts programming on All Classical Portland on weekend afternoons and evenings. In 2006 he created “The Score,” a national (and now international) syndicated film music program, heard on All Classical Portland every Saturday and Sunday at 2 pm, and syndicated to more than 50 U.S. cities.

I would LOVE to go to this! As a student I am not able to splurge on events like this! I would love to attend the Saturday event at the Scottish Rite Center!!

  2. Christopher February 20, 2013 at 10:53 #

I would just like to win so I can gift these tickets to my two best friends, who are more than family to me. They’ve done so much for me over the years and recently, helped me out here to PDX from a bad situation in Indiana. It’d be a small token of gratification.

  3. Fred February 20, 2013 at 14:14 #

It would be a thrill to be able to attend this concert. Have loved Norman Leyden and his work with the Oregon Symphony. I hope I get lucky t this time.

Saturday, February 23rd please! My girlfriend works with very young kids all day and any chance to get out and enjoy time with adults is always great.

  5. Amber February 20, 2013 at 14:27 #

I just moved to town and a free night out would be very kind on my current finances. February 23, works best for me.

  6. Paul Nipp February 20, 2013 at 14:51 #

My previous entry was taken down? I can only assume because my girlfriend and I both entered at the same time. Sorry, we can’t afford two computers. Why do you think we’re trying to win free tickets? I would very much like to go on February 23rd.

I am not a film buff; I am a film nut. I am the aficionado’s aficionado. Some days I wake up and watch nothing but my favorite films. I have no shame about my addiction. Film scores are what endear great films to viewers. Think of the soundtrack of “American Beauty,” “Lord of the Rings,” “Vertigo,” “The Misfits,” and “South Pacific.” There is something magical about a good musical score. What would “Psycho” be without the creepy orchestral sound when the knife comes plunging down? Or the music track of “E.T. – The Extraterrestrial. Is there anything John Williams cannot write? What would “Star Wars” or “Jaws” have been without him? I admit I am fond of Henry Mancini, (The Pink Panther), but every time I hear Bernard Hermann’s scores for “Vertigo,” I get dizzy! You must give me the tickets or I will go ape as in “Planet of the Apes,” (with a tip of the hat to Jerry Goldsmith. So don’t monkey around. Send those tickets!

    This would be fun!

  10. Kelli February 21, 2013 at 16:04 #

It would be wonderful to introduce my husband to music that did not originate within a video game. The orchestra for me, the movie scores for him – definitely a grand step in the right direction.

  11. Rod Wilson February 21, 2013 at 16:15 #

And the winner is… MY EARS!!

  12. Stacey W February 21, 2013 at 16:20 #

I LOVE film scores, and have boxes full of movie soundtrack CDs at home. It would be fantastic to hear an orchestra play the music I love. I can go on either night. Thanks for the fun contest!

I forgot to tell you when I wanted to attend. HOW ABOUT SATURDAY? I have never won anything before, except once when I was a little kid I won a free throw competition but I had to work for that one. If you pick me you will know you are sending not just another schmoe to a free event, but making me a believer that the universe is just and who knows? I may sit down with my cheap little guitar and write a classic score for a film one day. And the film may be my film and when I am on the podium getting my Academy Award, who will I thank? You, my friends. IF YOU INSIST I GO ON FRIDAY NIGHT I WILL TRY TO FIND A DATE. I HAVE ONLY DATED TWO TIMES IN ONE YEAR. MY LAST DATE WAS WITH AN AUSTRALIAN WOMAN I HAD NOT SEEN IN 31 YEARS. Maybe this is my screenplay waiting to happen. And when I am on the podium, teary eyed, almost too in touch with my feminine side, I will point to you in the audience and say, “That guy, that guy over there with the black glasses – he made this all happen! Stand up you!” And so, thank you for helping my love life, too.

Me and my husband love hearing live orchestra, but have only been able to do it once. We’d love to do it again!

    • Mandy February 21, 2013 at 17:22 #

Ooops – and I’ll go either Friday or Saturday night, but would prefer saturday!

  15. Anne P February 21, 2013 at 17:46 #

  16. Aimee February 21, 2013 at 18:12 #

I would be extreemly greatful for orchestra tickets for Saturday. I have never been, and would love the oppertunity to expand my horizon.

    ~thanks

  18. Scout February 21, 2013 at 18:57 #

I’d love to win tickets for Friday night so I can give them to my friend, an amazing composer who works too hard and needs this. Saturday would work, too.

  19. scout February 21, 2013 at 18:59 #

I’d love to win tickets for Friday so I can treat my friend, an amazing composer, who works too hard and really needs this. Saturday would be great, too – either one.

  20. Jae Ann Atwood February 21, 2013 at 19:45 #

I love film music. Friday night would be great.

  21. Rose February 21, 2013 at 20:00 #

Please pick me! We were having our date night last week and thanks to a baby getting a cold, we both missed our once In a very blue moon date night. We need a show like this to reconnect. Would love to see the Saturday night show!

  22. Tracy February 21, 2013 at 20:22 #

I’m a nursing student and have had an impossibly long week. I can’t think of a better way to relax and accomplish some self-care this weekend than seeing the Portland Chamber Orchestra play. As a student, $30 for a pair of tickets is a lot of money for me, so winning these would be so nice. And here’s one more reason I really want to go – my fellow classmate is performing with the orchestra! I’ve been wanting to see her play for a while now.

    • Tracy February 21, 2013 at 20:23 #

Oh, and either Friday or Saturday night would work for me!

  23. Scotty February 21, 2013 at 20:58 #

I would really like to see this friday night. My partner would be so surprised.

  24. Denis Mortenson February 21, 2013 at 23:31 #

My only date in recent weeks was not really a date. I met Margot in Freddies in the organic aisle. She came right up to me and we immediately launched into a conversation about the bulk food bins, and she turned to me said we ought to go out on a date. I had no date for Valentines Day and so eventually I took her up on it. On the way to Hillsboro, she explained she had a middle range hearing problem. She was pushing every button on the radio to, I suppose, show me the original owner’s (her niece) music preferences. I remembered riding in my car in Eugene and having the word “baroque” come into my mind. As a writer I am intrigued by wordplay so I began saying, aloud, phrases like “going for baroque.” I thought I was pretty clever but I grew bored with myself. The very first thing I though of was an Asian man playing a cello. Why, I did not know, until I turned on the radio. The instant I turned it on, an announcer said, “. . .we now join the London Philharmonic orchestra and Yo Yo Ma, played a Baroque melody. . . .” So, the moral of all this is that inspiration is often found via music, and as it is the universal language, I hope you will allow me to be inspired either Friday or Saturday night in Beaverton. Music is a keystone of my life, though I am not that great of a composer. I am an ASCAP member, however. Since I was a child I have been enamored with films, and particularly film scores. If you send the tickets I will ask Margot to go with me. She is not quite a cougar, but interesting things happen when I am with her. For example, on the trip to Hillsboro I mentioned, we were rear-ended by a Mexican-American. The damage to Margot’s right fender was superficial, and the Hispanic driver was apologetic. He said she could bring the car by a nearby auto-body shop and he would fix it for no charge. He was essentially begging her not to report it, which is essentially what I am doing by these missives. I hope you will pick me. When I was a boy I was rarely picked for anything. I was picked on, but never picked. You can rectify this sad fact by sending me to this excellent concert with Margot, my personal almost-a-cougar.

I would love to go on Saturday. I use to play in symphonies and haven’t been to a concert in ages!

  26. Marissa February 22, 2013 at 11:37 #

Because I used to be first chair cello at East Middle School!

  27. Tim February 22, 2013 at 13:11 #
