Girls Inc. of Northwest Oregon will hold its eighth annual Power of the Purse event on March 8 at the Portland Art Museum. The main event will feature a live auction where girls participating in Girls Inc’s girl empowerment programs will model one of a kind handbags designed by local “purse-o-nalities” along with one of Portland’s top product designers.
The night will also include a silent auction, shopping with some of Portland’s favorite boutiques, a wine wall, and a light dinner. Proceeds will support Girls Inc. of Northwest Oregon, where girls are inspired to be strong, smart, and bold.

Once, Coyote returned a lost purse to a woman at the Saturday Market. She was delighted of course, but a little confused, “My purse had a $100 dollar bill in it when I lost it, ” she explained, “But now there are ten $10 dollar bills!” Coyote beamed and said, “I did that! I returned a lady’s purse to her last Winter and she was SO glad to get it back, she said she was gonna give me a reward, but she didn’t have any change, so I got nothing. This time, I came prepared!”
My friend designs hats and purses and has a piece in this year’s show! I would love to be there to cheer her on (and to see if Coyote makes a special guest appearance!) ;)

I have been a member of the “Girls and their Allies” and “Feminist Mothers” caucuses of the National Women’s Studies Association for four years, and I’ve never been able to afford any of their conferences. I’d love to take my 13-year old to this event and show our support in person.

I would love to go to see what this “Power of the Purse” program is about which seems fabulous to promote some of the most important virtues to young women to help them really make something of themselves.
I have to admit that I do have a personal interest in this benefit and that is that I have a little girl who is turning six next week so this is a program that she can participate in in a couple more years.

I’m currently volunteering as a facilitator for one of the after school groups for middle school girls. Although I’d love to attend this event and support the fantastic women who support the girls of Portland, the ticket cost has been prohibitive.
