George Clinton is one of the foremost innovators of funk music, and was the mastermind behind the bands Parliament and Funkadelic. Clinton was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 with 15 other members of Parliament-Funkadelic.

Clinton started his career with the Parliaments, a barbershop doo-wop ensemble, which scored a major hit with “I Wanna Testify” in 1967. Clinton then began experimenting with harmonies, melody, and rhythm, and taking cues from the psychedelic movement, forever setting himself apart from the Motown era.

By the early 1970s, the group’s tight songs evolved into sprawling jams around funky rhythms. They dropped the “s” from the band name and Parliament was born. Around the same time, Clinton spawned Funkadelic, a rock group which fused psychedelic guitar distortion, bizarre sound effects, and cosmological rants with danceable beats and booming bass lines. Funkadelic recorded a number of influential concept albums, including Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow, Maggot Brain, and America Eats Its Young.

I have loved George and Pfunk since the first time I saw PCU as a child of the 90s. I can clearly remember dancing on the couch, singing along and wishing that I was already in college so I could attend such “awesome parties”. All these years later I still love funk and I’m especially greatful for the band that taught me what funk is, George Clinton And The Parliment Funkadelic. I have never seen them in person and this would totally fufill a childhood dream. (Also to up the ante even more – tomorrow is my birthday!) Thanks!

  7. M Siosal March 19, 2013 at 10:25 #

I have been lucky enough to get free tix from you in the past, but never to live ass-shaking music. My husband and I have been talking about going to this show for a while but can’t swing the cost of tickets ourselves.

  8. JobyT March 19, 2013 at 10:26 #

    Greetings,
I would like to attend this show to honor my friend Tyler back in Iowa City, IA. I had recently moved back to Iowa City from the Olympic peninsula, and was ignorant in they ways of real funk. Tyler opened my eyes to George Clinton, Parliament and Funkadelic. He would play albums at work and we would just get funky making sandwiches all night long. Our funky good times climaxed with live performances by an allstar cast of locals playing as WEFUNK, a Parliament Funkadelic tribute band.
Now the only thing left is to see the mothership connection himself, and funk in his presence.

  18. Alli March 19, 2013 at 11:51 #

What a great show! I’d love to win tickets!

  19. Alicia March 19, 2013 at 12:02 #

Love George! Thank you for the chance to see him!

  36. Mark March 21, 2013 at 13:17 #

Last time I saw Parliament was in KC in 95, it was the 25th anniversary of the mothership landing there. There were a bunch of people there who were at the show in ’75. It was amazing. Would love to go see them again.

  37. Neil March 21, 2013 at 13:27 #

    Craft beer + portland,Oregon + George Clinton = :-)

  40. Lauren March 21, 2013 at 14:03 #

Because I spent hours listening to One Nation Under a Groove over and over again so that I could translate the lyrics in to Morse code, and then paint them on to a mannequin bust. I feel this would be a great way to reward myself for all of the hours of listening, translating and painting!

  41. Christine Gordon March 21, 2013 at 14:04 #

George is King of Funk in my opinion. So much great talent in Parliament and Funkadelic.! It’s been many years since I’ve seen George and his bands in action. I would LOVE to get my groove on tomorrow night!!

  47. Ed March 21, 2013 at 14:52 #

My favorite Clinton by far! George is the funkiest purveyor of interplanetary groove on the planet. I would love to feel the power of the P-Funk in PDX tomorrow night! Live funk is great for the body and soul. This is truly music that you can feel and be transformed by. My DNA needs a healthy dose of Parliament Funkadelic! Gotta have some funk!

  48. Sara Hemmer March 21, 2013 at 14:56 #

I fell in love with George Clinton and Portland the same weekend about fifteen years ago! My best friend and I were rockin the bouncy floor at Crystal and having a funkadelic time. After a few drinks and good vibes, I proclaimed that I decided to move to Portland (from KY!
Well it took twelve years and a few more George Clinton shows to make it happen. Best decision I’ve made.
This would make a great anniversary show celebrating lifelong friendship, fun and funk the rest!!

  49. Tiffany Andrews March 21, 2013 at 15:54 #

I have wanted to see him since I was little! LOVE! I have worked 80 hours a week for three weeks, and a little funk would be a nice break!

  50. Marsha March 21, 2013 at 15:55 #

I remember the first time I saw PCU, the amazing 90s version of Animal House featuring a live ridiculous performance from the one, the only, George Clinton. I immediately got funkified and vowed to someday see him perform. Help me achieve my funky goal PDX Pipeline!

  51. alan silver March 21, 2013 at 15:55 #

I’m a student of funk, soul, jazz and I essentially live in the 70s, musically. I would love to be at this show and let the groove soak into my skin… (and I have a dude I’d love to be grooving with, at this show)… thank you!

ALSO, I’m new to PDX and it’d be a great way of proving to my friends back on the East Coast, that the left coast really is the best one!!!

  59. Amanda March 21, 2013 at 16:41 #

This concert falls on my 30th birthday, for reals. I have plans to hang out elsewhere because I can’t afford these tickets. But I’ve always very much wanted to see George Clinton live and would be astonished if I won tickets to the Funk on my bday! Now that’d be a rad surprise…!!!

Legendary, that’s all that needs to be said. I hope its not to late to get into the drawing. It would be incredible to see these guys live! Been listening to them for longer than I can remember. And boy, by the glide in my stride and the dip in my hip, I surely do need to get on board the Mothership. I needs my George and my Bernie and my Bootsy, y’all. I needs ‘em baaaad.
