Cheers to Belgian Beers is back for its seventh year and is changing it up for 2013.  The Belgian-style only Ale Festival will feature no single yeast strain for the beers entered, no dart throw to diversify the color and strength of the beers and no People’s Choice Award.  When Cheers to Belgian Beers started in 2007, it was to help introduce Oregonians to the breadth of style and flavors of beers brewed in Belgium.  Since 2008, Oregon brewers have won medals in the Belgian-Style or Sour Ale categories every year at the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup.

In order to showcase these medal winning beers, opening up the Festival to beers that have been aged, blended, barrel aged or soured and not requiring all brewers to do so was necessary.  The 2013 Cheers to Belgian Beers currently features 48 beers from 44 breweries with more beers expected by the day of the festival.

For the third year, the festivities will be at Metalcraft Fabrication in Portland, a maker of brewing systems and fermentation tanks for the rapidly growing craft beer industry in Oregon, as well as the United States.  The outside area will be tented and food from Philadelphia’s Steaks & Hoagies will be available on Friday and Saturday and food from KOi Fusion will be available from noon-6pm on Saturday.  If you need to pick up some official Timbers Army merchandise for the match on Sunday, the No Pity Van will be onsite as well.  People are encouraged to take public transportation (the TriMet Bus Line 35 stops 1 block away and the Yellow Max Line stops 2 and 3 blocks away) or ride their bike (we will have bike parking outside for 100+ bikes).  Parking is available on the street between Broadway and N. Graham St.

  18. Erika April 15, 2013 at 15:47 #

Last year I went to the International Beer Fest and was not so impressed by some of the European beers. Perhaps I need to taste more. If I, a dark beer fan, can come around to IPAs (so delicious), surely I can find a Belgian to love too. “Op uw gezondheid!” and ” A votre sante!”

  19. wallace April 15, 2013 at 16:05 #

I’d like to win because I am from Belgium and I am a beer!

  78. Jared Wols April 18, 2013 at 14:46 #

Belgians make the best beer no doubt, but portland brewers like commons can certainly give them a run for the money. I love that yeasty yeasty flavor. In a town dominated by ipa and hopheads i’m like a fish out of water, but its events like this that keep me coming back. Would love to win and get lost in the beer

  79. Norman April 18, 2013 at 14:47 #

This will be a blast! Must have tickets!

  80. Tanya McMullen April 18, 2013 at 14:49 #

My husband is a HUGE beer fan and we often like to go to go on brew tours throughout the Pacific Northwest. Surprisingly, we have never attended the Cheers for Belgian Beers festival. This would be a wonderful surprise to take him to. Please pick us as we are in desperate need of some tasty beers and an evening of fun! Cheers!!! :-)

I want to go cause I love Belgian beer!

  82. Frank L April 18, 2013 at 14:50 #

I need tickets because I just spent the week (and all of my money until next payday) drinking up all of the craft beer in San Diego.

I haven’t missed this kick-off beer fest for years and it would break my heart to stay at home penniless and beerless this year.

  83. Eder April 18, 2013 at 14:55 #

I love beer more than life itself (sad I know) and I’ve never even heard this event…I think I’d be a good person to give some tickets to and make a new fan!

I really want to do something special for my friend. He’s coming in from out of town to see me & this would really take our relationship to the next level by making it an unforgettable evening! I might even learn a thing or two about beer since I’m only 21!! haha

  88. Grant April 18, 2013 at 14:58 #

  92. Jesse April 18, 2013 at 15:09 #

Because it’s fun to see what the brewer’s we love do when they are forced to step out of their comfort zone. I expect them to take Belgium’s well-established creativity to new heights.

  93. Jessica April 18, 2013 at 15:27 #

Mmm beer… Belgian beer… would love to go this weekend!

  94. Pav April 18, 2013 at 15:29 #

  96. Eric Purcell April 18, 2013 at 15:36 #

Cheers to Belgian Beers is our favorite beer event of the year! Over many years of attending brewing events we’ve become SNOBS (literally and figuratively) and our tastes have both evolved toward the Belgian styles of beer, particularly the Trappist Ales. Given that, many years I have to travel for business (I’m an engineer for an auto racing team and have to travel roughly 200 days a year from my beloved Portland) and we are we are unable to attend CtBB. And the event venue just adds to our love for this event – the craftsmanship that goes into MetalCrafters products would fit right in with the best in Indy Car! Those guys are awesome!! Getting a chance to share a brew with these amazing fabricators and talk to the brewers that are challenged by re-inventing recipes that are hundreds if years old is just killer! Whether we win tickets or not, we are both so stoked to be there and expect nothing but a great time and some new (and a few old) friends! This IS the quintessential Portland beer event!

  97. Robyn Johnson April 18, 2013 at 15:40 #

I would love to win the free tickets! I am a Belgium Beer girl! Have even said I’ld move in with the Monks and not talk (love to talk btw) if only I get a Belgium beer a day:-) I went for the first time last year and was in Belgium heaven. Money is tight this year and winning these tickets would help out a lot. I hope you consider me to win. When I love something I post tons of pictures and comments on Facebook. Just look at my page. Belgium beers till I die!

  98. Phdesigns April 18, 2013 at 15:48 #

My Partner has just moved here from the Midwest and He has never been to a brew fest!!! This would be so much fun to surprise him with tickets!!!

  103. Greg A April 18, 2013 at 15:58 #

  130. Leighanna April 18, 2013 at 17:56 #

It’s simple, I love beer and by going to this fest it would allow me to try certain beers that I may otherwise not get the chance to try again.

  131. Diana April 18, 2013 at 18:12 #

I’m not a huge fan of Belgian beers at the moment but I would love it if this ended up changing my mind about them!

  132. Chris April 18, 2013 at 18:16 #

I have yet to find a Belgian style I really like. Help me find one!

  133. Anthony April 18, 2013 at 18:34 #

I know a little Belgian. But he’s not much of a beer drinker, so you should award the tickets to me!

  134. Sherry April 18, 2013 at 18:42 #

I used to not be much of a beer drinker but since coming to Portland I’ve discovered some quite delicious ones. This event sounds like a great way for me to learn and maybe find some new loves in beer.

  135. Andrea April 18, 2013 at 19:54 #

I really would love to go and get a chance to taste 48 different kinds of beers as well check out the Metalcraft Fabrication so I can get more info on how to start brewing my own craft beer.

  144. Charlie April 18, 2013 at 22:13 #

Filming a TV show about beer requires an enormous amount of money, which now all of mine is gone. This is the one festival that I have looked most forward to all year, one it’s belgian beers and two we are not going to work the festival. We are going to ENJOY the fest. Cheers!

  145. Robert April 18, 2013 at 22:26 #

There is just too much awesome here to miss. And on 4.20…can’t say I’d want to be doing anything else. And I’ve never been to Belgium.

  153. Drew April 19, 2013 at 00:27 #

I’m already salivating just thinking about it. It’s too far away. That man above is right. After I celebrate April 20th I’d like to try some belgiumese.

  154. JenK April 19, 2013 at 07:23 #

This is an excellent showcase of local brewing talent. Loved the concept of a single yeast, will be interested to see how things have changed this year with a broader selection of yeasts.

  165. John Seabury April 19, 2013 at 12:45 #

I lived in France last year and given my proximity to Belgium I did my best to sample as many Belgian beers as possible as the Saison style is by leaps and bounds my favorite style of beer. I’ve yet to try what the lovely state of Oregon’s take on Belgian beer is like so this festival is right up my alley!

  166. mc April 19, 2013 at 12:56 #

heck yes I hope I win!
