Pet Shop Boys are the UK’s most successful pop duo with 12 Top Ten studio albums and 40 Top 20 singles, including four number one records.

Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe first met in 1981 and began writing songs together. Their first single “West End girls” was released in 1984 as a one-off single but the following year they signed to Parlophone/EMI Records and a new version of “West End girls” climbed to the top of the charts. The single went on to reach number one in nine countries, including the USA. Their success continued with the release of further UK number one hits, “It’s a sin”, “Always on my mind” and “Heart”. They won Brit awards for Best Single in 1987 and Best Group in 1988. Other awards have followed, including Ivor Novello awards for songwriting in 1987 and 1988 and, in 2000, a third Ivor for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. In 2009 they were presented with the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music.

Their musical collaborations have included duets, productions or remixes for Dusty Springfield, Liza Minnelli, David Bowie, Elton John, Blur, Yoko Ono, Electronic, Rammstein, Madonna, Lady Gaga and The Killers. They have written or co-written songs for, amongst others, Shirley Bassey and Girls Aloud.

Yeah I’ll admit it, i am a fan!! Something about Pet Shop Boys beats and lyrics that are a blast to play and listen to. Would be very interested in seeing how they translate their tunes into a live show and winning these passes would be perfect! Thanks.

  2. Bill W. May 1, 2013 at 15:34 #

Soooooooo Super excited about going, did the MAJOR happy dance when I first heard they were coming to town. It’s great that they are doing what will be a wonderful production at such a beautiful venue. A performance by them is more than a mere concert, it’s a true event :-)

1985. I was living in a farming town in central Idaho. I spent my time there, and a mill town in eastern Oregon. I was going through all the changes that teenagers do, and I had grown tired of the impossibility, and party facade of pop music. I saw a video on MTV of the Pet Shop Boys, ‘Opportunities’. I wasn’t aware of ‘West End Girls’ at that time, but instantly was hooked by the sound, and the imagery of them. A couple years later, a friend of mine matter-of-factly handed me a 12″ single of them pictured in ruins with a simple title, ‘it’s a sin.’ Hearing the sound for the first time made me tear up. It was so beautiful, elegant, dramatic, and driving. Today’s youth can’t imagine what it is to hear technology as we did in the mid to late 1980’s. I wasn’t aware of it then, but I had begun a love affair, a 30 year journey of being a ‘pet shopper’. From cult favorite of ‘In The Night’, to ‘A Face Like That’, Neil Tennant, and Chris Lowe unknowingly have written the musical narrative of my life. ‘Was it Worth It?’ Oh yes. All their ‘Delusions Of Grandeur’ have been…’Always’.

Long time fan! Albums are one of the most influential in the 80’s and 90’s. Always theatrical, smart and funny…fave song: “It’s Alright”. Would love to see ‘em….

  12. Mollie May 1, 2013 at 21:05 #

Crap! I can’t top the 11 comments before mine, so I’ll just say I WANNA GO SEE THESE CRAZY BOYS!

  13. Kylie May 1, 2013 at 21:24 #

I have been a fan of pop culture since my early teenage years, however I quickly developed a passion for all things British Pop related and the Pet Shop Boys are quintessential British Pop.
I grew up in Australia and unfortunately Sydney (despite having a fabulous Mardi Gras Parade) is not a regular stop on the British Pop touring circuit.
In my twenties I moved to London which further fed my passion for all things Brit pop related. The unfortunate part is the entire time I was living in London the Pet Shop Boys didnt tour in London, they instead toured in Australia!!!
Now I live in magnificent Portland and the Pet Shop Boys are performing in the one place I never expected to see them!
The stars seem to be aligning and this is my chance!! They are aligning so well that my prebooked vacation away from Portland starts 5 days after their show.

  14. Tim May 1, 2013 at 22:24 #

I’ve been a fan for almost 20 years and I have all their albums on CD plus ~15 12″ singles (vinyl)! :D But I’ve never seen them perform live.. SO excited they are coming to Portland!

  15. francesca May 2, 2013 at 04:57 #

my twin sister and i spent our teenage years pretty distant from each other. we went to separate schools, lived such separate lives that many of the other kids didn’t even know the other sister existed. music however brought us together. we’d spend hours sitting on her bed listening to lps and playing backgammon. the pet shop boys was part of those years and i’ll love them forever. our birthday is oct 3. and she’ll be in town for the week. we are both psyched their concert coincides with her visit.

  16. Alethea Smartt LaRowe May 2, 2013 at 09:18 #

  23. John May 2, 2013 at 14:43 #

Wow, I didn’t even hear they were coming. West End Girls was a staple of when MTV was good and played music videos. Glad the winner is being choosen way before the event to allow people time to buy tickets if they don’t win. Thank you.

  24. Marabeth May 2, 2013 at 14:44 #

    Yes, please!

  29. Allison Vasquez May 2, 2013 at 15:04 #

I believe the Pet Shop Boys would love to meet me! Judging by their hats in the picture above, we would get on famously!

  30. Beth May 2, 2013 at 15:20 #

This would be so sweet! I’m a big fan of 80s music and love the Pet Shop Boys!! It would be so amazing to see them live! xoxo

  31. margit May 2, 2013 at 15:24 #

    amazing

  32. sean May 2, 2013 at 15:35 #

I was a gay keyboard player as a kid in the 80’s but didn’t know it yet. Chris Lowe was always my hero and PSB my favorite band of all time! Would love to finally see them!

  33. laraine lynch May 2, 2013 at 15:37 #

The Pet Shop Boys have helped my get through lows in my life and have also been there to support my good moods. My uncle, who is my favorite person, got me into 80’s music when I was young and it stuck. It is my favorite genre of music. Going to this show with my uncle would mean the world to me. xo

  34. mikeg May 2, 2013 at 15:54 #

I’m a huge fan and have seen them on their last tour. I’m even flying my best friend up from Dallas to see them since the tour skips over Dallas thistime. Love Neal and Chris.

  35. Anna May 2, 2013 at 15:56 #

From the first time I heard “West End Girls” as a little girl, The Pet Shop Boys’ music had an emotional effect on me. I never had the chance to see them live, growing in a small mid-west town with strict parental control. This just may be my last chance, but I am a starving artist so would really mean millions.

  36. Deanna Jones May 2, 2013 at 15:59 #

Have loved PSB since I was dancing, underage, in gay clubs when I was but a wee teenager. I’m 42 now and would LOVE to see them live as I have never done so.

  37. Danielle May 2, 2013 at 16:00 #

What have we done to deserve this?

As far as I can tell, PDX Pipeline, nothing. You some kind of Mother Teresa or I Dream of Genie with your selfless and omnipresent gratis tickets. But if anyone deserves them, Francesca above would be a good contender. In second place, consider me.

    Your faithful servant,
    Danielle

  38. JESSICA S May 2, 2013 at 16:03 #

i love the 80’s. plus it’s my birthday!

  39. Tammy May 2, 2013 at 16:11 #

    Please please please!!

  40. Ben May 2, 2013 at 16:23 #

The guys in my infantry unit in Germany in the 90s loved blasting Pet Shop Boys on Friday nights. I didn’t get around to telling them West End Girls was inspired by a TS Eliot poem. Or that other thing they never figured out.

  41. April Ruthie May 2, 2013 at 16:25 #

Awwwww…. look at all these fans! How super cool would it be to win these? Good luck picking someone awesome (of course I am awesome too, but can’t think of a list of reasons why at the moment… must be the 80s indifference inspired by the PSB).

  42. elliot May 2, 2013 at 16:56 #

    I would like to go.

  43. Sarah May 2, 2013 at 17:17 #

This would be a great surprise for my 80’s obsessed husband. Only Duran Duran would be better.

  44. Darcy B May 2, 2013 at 17:28 #

yes please —I lived in London during the 80’s—I love the Pet Shop Boys!!!!

  45. Dayan May 2, 2013 at 17:47 #

Pick me! Pick me! Pick me! I love the Pet Shop Boys and have been a fan for close to 30 years. I grew up listening to them and have such good memories associated with their music. They were a large part of the soundtrack to my adolescence.

  46. panda bear May 2, 2013 at 19:29 #

the 80s rocked! 8th grade sleepovers watching mtv all night, drinking 7up + playing with the ouja board!

  47. Mathew May 2, 2013 at 20:02 #

I love these guys! It’d be awesome to go

  48. Lorelee May 2, 2013 at 20:38 #

It would be “Electric” to win the tickets and experience them live!

  49. Tristina May 2, 2013 at 22:30 #

I missed the English Beat, OMD, Gary Numan, the Human League, the Wire, Peter Murphy, and I can’t afford to travel to see Depeche Mode. I’m so tired of missing all of the 80s groups and artists that I admire so much because of finances or bad circumstances. I don’t have the brains or the looks, so I don’t make lots of money. Help me out here! The Pet Shop Boys top my list!!!

    • bobby tumbleweed May 3, 2013 at 00:00 #

I’m with you Tristina. ‘We’re the bums, they step ov-ah as they leave the theat-ah.” If you’re a native Oregonian like I am, These acts, (except Depeche’ that started making stops here after Music For The Masses), only recently have started stopping in Portland. Due to the events of this last decade, tickets are ‘More Than A Dream’. At least we’ll have the satisfaction of seeing their name on the marquee. I’m definitely getting a photo of that. Hang in, Tristina. Our stars will line up ‘Somewhere’….we’ve got ‘Disco Potential.’

  50. Janice Dulle May 3, 2013 at 06:31 #

Love them. Not sure i would have made it through high school without them!

  51. Michelle May 3, 2013 at 07:19 #

Would be fun to revisit my youth

  52. Scott Worthington May 3, 2013 at 07:51 #

Can’t top the earlier posts! so l will just add my desire to see them and remember a happier time

  53. Diana Griffith May 3, 2013 at 08:30 #

I have fond memories of the Pet Shop Boys. Oh, the 80’s! Bring back big hair..please…

  54. Holly May 3, 2013 at 08:36 #

I’m not going to write a huge essay here, and attempt to convince you that giving me these tix would be one of the best things to happen to me this year….because i don’t think it would help. ;). Just know that it would be awesome!!!

  55. Tina Baumann May 3, 2013 at 08:47 #

I would love to see The Pet Shop Boys on October 4th, 2013 because I’ve never seen them live before. I think everybody knows a Pet Shop Boys song and they are very easy to listen to. I’ve never seen a band at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall before. I know it would be wonderful to visit Portland in October. It is too hot in Los Angeles and after living here for 21 years, I’m looking for a way out, even if it’s for a vacation here and there. Plus, my husband wants to go back to Portland for another visit and we’ve only been back home for 10 days. Such an amazing city!

  56. Lara May 3, 2013 at 11:19 #

“Disco” was a favorite cassette of mine in my youth, sign me up!

  57. Lisa May 3, 2013 at 11:24 #

Since I missed most of the 80’s PLEASE let me act like I was a teenager and pick me! (and because I am a West End girl…I LIVE in the West end, that counts!)

  58. Anne May 3, 2013 at 11:25 #

You’ve got the brains. I’ve got the looks. We’ll make.. not so much money. So these tickets would be much appreciated.

  59. Benjamin Freeman May 3, 2013 at 12:58 #

Who wouldn’t love to see them in concert. Having lived in the UK in the late 80’s I attend most all bands from then as I can. So please please please pick me. I can always use my Kristin Card, She said I wasn’t fun enough to date. So I need more fun in my life. So pick me?

    Cheers-
    Ben

  60. Sean May 3, 2013 at 13:01 #

This would be the perfect way to ring in my birthday this year!

  61. Toby May 3, 2013 at 14:17 #

I would love to go and take a good friend who needs cheering up!

  62. Helen May 3, 2013 at 14:31 #

When I was a little girl, I would lay in bed and listen to Pet Shop Boys and imagine myself as an Olympic ice skater, usually skating to the PSB version of “Always on My Mind”. I had the entire routine choreographed, with plenty of feeling and lots of lifts.

In high school my love for Pet Shop Boys continued, but it was in college I realized that my obsession with the boys and my imagery to their music unlocked the gay man I really am inside. Going to this show would bring the dream to fruition, and will plan on bringing a big bear to lift me in the crowd.

  63. Gino May 3, 2013 at 14:57 #

Woo! I’d love to go to this!

  64. Dinesh May 3, 2013 at 19:39 #

    I WANT PSB TICKETS, STAT!

  65. Audrey B May 3, 2013 at 22:44 #

‘It’s a Sin’ that I’m a ‘West End Girl’ but it’s ‘More Than A Dream’ that ‘Love Comes Quickly’ and the “Miracle’ is that “I’m Not Leaving”
    <3 these guys!!!

  66. David Carnese May 4, 2013 at 09:21 #

Taking me back to the late eighties in my VW Rabbit.

    “I want a dog, a Chihuahua
When I get back to my small flat
I want to hear somebody bark”

Please bark back that I get to see these guys sing this to me!

  67. Lee Benson May 4, 2013 at 16:28 #

I would like to attend this show for the following reasons:
    Always on My Mind
    Rent
    West End Girls
    Suburbia
    Opportunities

Plus, I never had the opportunity to see them when I was younger as they weren’t touring anymore.

  68. Scott May 4, 2013 at 23:22 #

Decades of intelligent, rich, thoughtful techno. Easily one of my all-time favorite bands.

  69. d@Ve May 6, 2013 at 09:17 #

i did the math to post this, and the math on the value of this. the first, 6 x 5 = 30. the second, seeing the pet shop boys = priceless + yes, please!!

  70. B. Roach May 6, 2013 at 15:15 #

MTV was my babysitter. Pet Shop boys were my uncles. Without them, and specifically “Go West,” I would’ve never watched Fritz Lang’s Metropolis or become a fan of Gilbert & George.

  71. MotherDoll May 7, 2013 at 08:43 #

What a throw back!!! This would be so much fun…LOVED, LOVED, LOVED West End Girls…Who didnt!!!

And at such a wonderful venue!!! Please pick me, I will enjoy this experience….

  72. Yasmine May 7, 2013 at 08:46 #

  73. TJ Norris May 8, 2013 at 10:17 #

Tennant & Lowe have proven that through four decades, even with timeless songwriting and cutting edge theatrics (Zaha Hadid, David Fielding, Bruce Weber, etc.) have only breached the bonds stateside on occasion while famously celebrated worldwide. They were the first Brit-pop band to break out into actual theatrical venues in London’s West End – only years before filling Wembley for more than one consecutive night. I was fortunate to see the Performance tour back in 1991 in Boston (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Performance_Tour), which still resonates today as one of the most memorable stage performances ever, not to mention the witty, sardonic music at its core. Though pop stars they have often shrugged convention for a stab into new worlds of video technology and various collaborations with some of the world’s leading entertainers: Liza Minnelli, David Bowie, Tina Turner….it is a testament to years of serious commitment to engaging their well oiled audiences that grow every year by way of the live show. I am thrilled about the opportunity to see them for the first time since I met them in person in New York during the sold out Y2K Nightlife tour where I stood by the stage with Elton John watching from a box above. It was an all-encompassing, very futuristic night indeed. One can only savor the flavor of what they might bring to Portland in ’13….is this their first time playing here (I’ve relocated here in ’01 and have been unaware if they have)? The Schnitz will be all abuzz.

  74. Tim May 8, 2013 at 15:09 #

Glad to see they are still out there making music. Would like to see them live,
