Dorian Duvall is Onuinu. When asked about his music, Dorian speaks deftly, using technical terms with great precision. However, when a listener is caught in the throes of his debut full-length, Mirror Gazer, it is nearly impossible to maintain such a steady mental discourse. Each song is teeming with raw wood grains over which to run your fingers and exposed rafters through which to follow countless reverberations. It is a sprawling, mixed-use space where ambient electronica, hip-hop and house music convene to talk in circles about the universe, and frankly, for Duvall, it’s just the beginning.
This is what happens when Brian Wilson, Anton Newcombe, and Kevin Shields take off their clothes and have sex in a cacophony of sound. The product of their love is the Grandparents, rolling along a tape track of bends, twisting tones, and sweet-sweet harmonies that drench the listener in the warm syrupy tones of their minds. Formed in 2009 when an old group of friends met new ones in dorms across Portland, Oregon. Their love of sonic experimentation and manipulation has resulted in pure psychedelic swoons that reflect the love of their namesake.
KPSU’s Radio Revival is a series of programming and events, April 24th-May 10th, to raise funds, friends & enthusiasm towards our efforts to acquire an FM signal. KPSU strives to amplify the voice and experience of students at Portland State University. Help bring free-form, student-run college radio back to Portland’s FM airwaves.
