Kicking off their maiden national tour, Play ME brings its sensational tribute to Neil Diamond to the Winningstad Theatre. You won’t believe your ears when you first hear New Mexico’s own Neil Diamond, recording artist Chris Waggoner performing some of the most beloved, iconic Neil Diamond tunes, backed by his 10 piece “Play Me” Band.

The band routinely puts on high-powered, sold-out performances throughout its home state of New Mexico, and is now pleased and excited to kick off its first ever national tour in the musical mecca of Portland, OR.

How to challenge a group of musicians that want to form a tribute band for a legendary entertainer:

1. Choose an entertainer that is celebrated as one of the most reputed singer-songwriters, enigmatic stage presences, and best-selling artists in pop/rock history.

2. Make sure the entertainer has recently been immortalized as a Rock n Roll Hall of Fame inductee and a Kennedy Center honoree.

3. Ensure that the tribute band cuts their teeth playing to audiences in a region where musical tastes are heavily skewed toward country-western, norteño, and Native American.

4. Scoff at their audacity.

This was the journey that lead vocalist and producer Chris Waggoner, bassist and arranger John Hyndman, and their ragtag group of musician friends boldly set out upon when they formed Play Me, A Tribute to Neil Diamond, in the spring of 2011 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Their ambition has paid off, as the band routinely puts on high-powered, sold-out performances accompanied by some of the area’s most talented musicians.

What started off as a fun little tribute show amongst a handful of friends has grown into a full-scale stage production, with a full range of horns, wind instruments, percussion, and background vocals from up to a dozen participants at a time. Many of them have been on the grind in the local scene for years as a part of other outfits playing a variety of musical styles.

Instead of just covering Neil Diamond’s iconic tunes, Play Me puts their own creative touches on them to create a magical experience. John, for example, composed original melodic and harmony lines in some of the songs so that horns and strings could be added in a way that fits stylistically and thematically with the overall show.

And for Chris, who channels Neil Diamond with vigor and intensity as the band’s frontman, Play Me has been a passion project thirty-plus years in the making. It’s no wonder audience members have been known to say that if you close your eyes, it truly sounds like you’re at a show with the Brooklyn Cowboy himself. This combination of talent, passion, and showmanship has made Play Me New Mexico’s premier Neil Diamond tribute act.

I would love to win these 2 tickets to see neil diamond in concert. i love listening to him sing. He is like music to my ears. He is 7 years older than I am so we are pretty much the same age. I started listening to him in the late 60′s when I was in South Korea working for Uncle Sam. We didn’t have access to much music there but we loved listening to him. Please let me win these tickets. I hope all of your days are blessed.

My friend and I saw the real Neil several years ago as well as the Surreal Neil. This sounds right up our alley. We would love to go. It has been a rough several years for us and this would be a huge bright point to win these tickets.

New Mexico’s own Neil Diamond, recording artist Chris Waggoner performing some of the most beloved, iconic Neil Diamond tunes, backed by his 10 piece “Play Me” Band.

I know this is a TRIBUTE show!

I think the others that want to win tickets don’t read what they want to win!

I should win the tickets because I can read what it actually is, a TRIBUTE to Neil Diamond.
    And the Play Me band….

My parents played Neil Diamond on the turn table all the time when I was growing up. My earliest memories include his music playing at our house. His music seeped into my mind and heart. She Walks on Water and Done Too Soon are two late-comers to my personal favorites list. I’ve never seen Neil Diamond in concert, but would love to get just a taste of what it might be like by seeing this tribute band.

Five weeks ago I saw my best friend for the first time in years. When we where in our twenties we saw Neil play in PDX and would find our way to local cover band shows when they played. We have rolled down many roads with Neil and would love to get together and enjoy some much needed time together and hear some great tunes.

Have never gotten a chance to see Neil live but love his music, at 67 doubt I have many years
left to do so. If begging & pleading will help let me know what I have to do; almost anything for
a couple of free tickets. At $10 an hour can’t afford to put out the days paycheck for one. Thanks for the consideration. Fingers crossed & praying fervently to hear from you soon with good news.

Neil Diamond’s music is such ‘feel good’ music. Everytime I hear one of his songs I turn it up and sing as loud as I can. Everyone around me says, “oh know her she goes again” because I can’t carry a tune if my life depended on it. But I don’t care…singing to a Neil Diamond tune is magical! Maybe I shouldn’t win I would hate to ruin the person standing next to mes time. Just kidding everyone will be singing. Even my boyfriend who “hates Neil DIamond” knows all the words and will be singing right along with me! How can you not!!

I would love to take my mom to a Neil Diamond tribute…I know the Jazz Singer …we rented a vcr back in the 80′s and pulled out the couch and watched it over and over….I still cry at ” Hello Again”….

  15. Jessica July 14, 2013 at 09:05 #

This would be such fun to take my boyfriend to. “Sweet Caroline”is his go to karaoke song and when I was a kid I can remember pretending I was an orchestra conductor to “America” on loop. I would be impressed to see someone tribute Neil’s music.

  16. Nancy Guyer July 18, 2013 at 12:21 #

Now this is what I call entertainment. I tried to see Neil when he was in town awhile back but, could’nt get tickets. I would love to see his show. I know all his songs and would have so much fun singing along. Please, pretty please.

My shiny new husband introduced me to the Great and Powerful Neil Diamond on our first date, and we’ve shared in our fandom since. In fact, and much to everyone’s chagrin, Forever in Blue Jeans provided awesomesauce soundtrack to properly escort us down the aisle once we were pronounced husband and wife. So there it is. We can haz so to sing songs blue?

  19. Rachel July 20, 2013 at 00:03 #

I love Neil Diamond’s music. It would be great to hear a tribute band playing his stuff.

  20. Eileen July 20, 2013 at 15:29 #

Why do I want to attend the concert?

My dad grew up in Brooklyn. This song reminds me of him… “I built me a castle with dragons and kings – and I’d ride off with them as I stood by my window and looked out on those, Brooklyn roads…” (Brooklyn Roads)

Great memories of a time gone by (I am 54 years old and grew up with this music)….
