In the latest iteration of our live film score series Fin de Cinema, we bring you our most contemporary selection yet: Baz Luhrmann’s cinematic adaptation of Romeo + Juliet from 1996. Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio star in this seductive, splendid and intensely passionate piece of sublime anachronism, where the Shakespearean vernacular crash-lands into the mouths of rival gang members in the ’90s, in the imagined SoCal vacation town “Verona Beach”.

Taking you on this larger-than-life POP journey are some fine up-and-coming groups: deconstructed hip-hop / free jazz savants GRAMMIES (feat. members of local R&B heavyweight Shy Girls), nationally blog-adored and utterly charming future-R&B boy band MAGIC FADES, and the textured and immersive ‘scapes of Vaporwave artist SOUL IPSUM.

This just sounds amazing! Romeo + Juliet was one of my favorite movies growing up, and to see it with a live score would be fantastic. This mama needs a night out!

One day I ran into a friend of mine, Booby. Because he and I were alone in the forest, we decided to tell stories. Stories, which included Romeo and Juliet, duh a classic. Anyway’s, as we continued sharing stories, Booby shares with me very intimate knowledge about himself. He told me, that he is indeed a time traveler and has learned something very profound about Mr. Shakespeare and his family. Torturing me with the clock and bounding my promise never to tell a soul, he finally spoke. He said, “Shakespeare had seven siblings, one of which was named Richard.” Suddenly, Booby’s color was ripped out of his face, leaving him to look rather scary, then he mumbled these words, “Richard, my brother, will have by the year 2013, lived many lives. Only by a wind of chance will he remember who he is.” Booby’s face flushed with color. Booby was back to normal. I have not spoke about this sense than. For the fear of breaking the promise. I have been zipped up. I share now because I do have my reasons to attend. A wish is now made.

    THIS EPIC MOVIE!
John Liguizamo at his absolute sexiest as the rat-catcher, Perrinue’s E-tabbed, To Wong Foo-esque Mercutio, that amazing entrance by the OG Mob Wife, Lady Capulet, oh, and then PAUL RUDD as Paris. To top it off, two pretty white kids with problems- I love that everyday of the week and all through the 90′s. But the ultimate reason I must go to this screening- is that Cardigans song and whoever is going to croon out some Thom Yorke. If I don’t have a spiritual experience that night, it’s cuz you didn’t give me tickets.

  22. Fabian Dorgan August 19, 2013 at 14:58 #

I’d like to go because this movie is a masterpiece and I was sadly unable to ever see it in a theater. I get such joy from the communal experience of watching a film in a cinema crowded with strangers, on the same journey as yourself. I don’t have the money or I would be purchasing tickets, for sure! Thank you for the opportunity to win.

I would like to win tickets to see Romeo and Juliet because this film was a revelation to me. I was 10 when the film was released. I did not understand all of the nuances, but the themes, characters and music captured my heart & imagination. This film, and its soundtrack, stands the test of time. It still captures my heart and imagination, with each viewing. I would adore the chance to see it on the big screen, for the first time!! The live music will be a heavenly addition. I’ve never experienced anything like this. Please give me a chance! I love that you’ve held this contest. Thank you.
