Rhythm, melody and movement are woven together into an exhilarating theatrical experience in our final concert of the year! MAKING WAVES 2013 features the Rose City’s own Portland Taiko with Los Angeles-based taiko group ON Ensemble. Infusing the powerful rhythms of ensemble Japanese drumming with elements of hip-hop, rock and electronica, On Ensemble’s unique sound has been praised as “Completely original and brilliantly conceived.” Portland Taiko is thrilled to be sharing the stage of the historic Aladdin Theater, the perfect venue to showcase our full community group and guest artists. This is not a show to be missed!
With Japanese drums at the foundation of its world fusion mix, On Ensemble takes the ancient instruments of taiko into new realms. The four members, Masato Baba, Kristofer Bergstrom, hoji Kameda and Kelvin Underwood are individually recognized as leading artists in their field. Sought after as teachers, workshop leaders, composers and performers, On Ensemble members have been featured in the music of the hit TV show “Heroes”, in the David Mamet movie “Redbelt” and performing with Stevie Wonder at the 2008 Democratic National Convention.
About Portland Taiko: Founded in 1994, Portland Taiko was the first professional taiko (Japanese drum performance) ensemble in the Pacific Northwest, and has been a strong artistic presence in Portland and beyond for eighteen years. Portland Taiko pushes the boundaries of taiko expression by integrating contemporary sound, modern and folk dance movement, and world music with traditional taiko rhythms. Artistic Director Michelle Fujii and Managing Director Robin Mullins now lead the company, which performs annually for over 50,000 people locally and nationally in concerts, community performances, and tour engagements. Portland Taiko also offers studio classes, school programs, and community educational work to students of all ages.
