Karen Lovely’s “Spirits of Prohibition HALLOWEEN Party” at Jimmy Mak’s, Saturday October 26th! Huzzah! Flappers & Fellas, if you know your onions, you’ll bust out your glad rags and ankle down to the best juice joint and frolic pad in town for a night of smoking hot jazz & blues from the 1920s & 30s. Special guests: The Bathtub Gin Serenaders, Robbie Laws and Mary Flower.
Prizes for Best Costume! Come as your favorite flapper, gangster or bootlegger. To help get your groove on, Jimmy Mak’s will be serving up some classic prohibition libations…sip on a Bees Knees, Harlem Cocktail, Sidecar or Luigi.
“There’s two kinds of people in this town, bootleggers and customers.”
While “Empress of the Blues,” Bessie Smith was blazing musical trails across the North, South and Midwest, “Prohibition Rose” reigned queen over bootlegging activities in Portland. Shanghai City was infamous during prohibition times for its night life, underground city, and smuggling of booze and people. “Wet” did not refer to the rain.
KAREN LOVELY – Always backed by a stellar band, this powerhouse vocalist delivers a blistering mix of contemporary & old school blues. Lovely’s standout performances have garnered awards, critical acclaim and standing ovations at festivals and venues throughout the US, Canada and Europe.
Prohibition band includes Devin Phillips on sax, Carlton Jackson on drums, Doug Bundy on clarinet, Tyler Smith on bass, Pat McDougall on piano, plus special guests Robbie Laws, Mary Flower, and The Bathtub Gin Serenaders with Ila Selene on vocals, Melissa Orr on violin and vocals, Stephany Smith Pearson on accordion, mandolin and vocals, Eric Von Radics on guitar and vocals, Lawrence Newcomb on clarinet and saxophone, David Orr on ukulele bass, Chris Matthews on drums and Chari Weatherford on washboard.
