Pioneer Courthouse Square
701 SW 6th Avenue, Portland, OR 97204

The popular event feature four-dozen big, bold ales designed to fend off the cold chill of a long winter night, plus another 16 special tappings throughout the week. From Belgians to barleywines, porters to winter warmers, and spiced ales to stouts, these beers have either been crafted or blended specifically for the event or are hard-to-fine vintages, underscoring the event’s reputation as one of finest gathering of winter beers anywhere in the nation.

Despite being held outdoors during one of the coldest months of the year, more than 17,000 festival attendees stay warm and dry over the five day festival under clear-topped tents that cover the venue. Gas heaters create a cozy ambiance beneath the boughs of the region’s largest decorated Christmas tree. In addition to beer tasting, the festival also features meet the brewer events, a root beer garden, food vendors, beer pairings with cupcakes & cheese, event merchandise and a coat and bag check that raises funds for the Children’s Cancer Association.

Beat the crowds, come on opening day:

  • Fewer people
  • Zero chance a beer will be sold out
  • It’s opening day and you can feel the vibe from the staff, servers, city and the beers
  • Friendly, knowledgeable beer geeks in attendance, not frat boys
  • Chance to hit the rare beers and brag to your friends who cannot make it to the fest till Fri., Sat., Sun.

I wanted to volunteer for this festival, but didn’t get to sign up in time. Seasonal beers are some of my favorites, and I would love a chance to check this event out!

  5. Arran November 25, 2013 at 14:17 #

What a great way for my friends and I to get into the holiday spirit: with beer!

  6. Erick November 25, 2013 at 14:17 #

Why I’d like to attend? It’s only the best event of the holiday season!

  7. Gerard November 25, 2013 at 14:18 #

I have just moved to Portland from Virginia Beach after retiring from the Navy. I can’t think of a better beer fest to get acclimated to the area with! It’s also the first beer fest that I’m not scheduled to be working for that weekend. Thanks for the contest. I await the results with beer-baited breath.

  8. Candice November 25, 2013 at 14:18 #

I would love to win because I haven’t been to the Holiday Ale Fest and I heard it’s even better than the Brewers Fest during the summer. Plus I love stouts and want to try lots of new beers!

  9. Stacey Sherfield November 25, 2013 at 14:21 #

I would actually like to send my husband to this. He needs to get out more and this is an interest of his.

  10. JT November 25, 2013 at 14:33 #

  11. Michelle November 25, 2013 at 14:34 #

  12. Steve Heikkila November 25, 2013 at 14:34 #

  13. Casey November 25, 2013 at 14:39 #

Why would I like to attend? Why, beer of course. And festive beer at that! Who could as for anything more?

  14. Mary November 25, 2013 at 14:40 #

I’d love some tickets to this! Portland beer festivals are the best.

  15. Bethlayne November 25, 2013 at 14:42 #

Beer, Portland, friends, beer, frosty air, beer, holiday cheer…more beer
    Need I say more?

  16. Matt November 25, 2013 at 14:49 #

I would love to attend because this is easily my favorite beer festival in Portland. The beer selection is always outstanding, with a variety of inventive brews to sample; the location is perfect, with the beautiful tree lording over the action; and the scene is always festive, with ugly sweaters, Santa Clauses roaming the festival, and more.

Each year, it’s one of the most-anticipated holiday traditions with my friends and I.

  17. Mary November 25, 2013 at 14:53 #

I’ll recruit everyone at the beer fest to finally locate my brick somewhere on the Square. What could go wrong?

  18. Michele November 25, 2013 at 14:57 #

Ale, Ale, the gang’s all here…that’s why I want to be THERE! A chance to let my inner beer geek out and not be criticized. Hopefully.

  19. Garrett B November 25, 2013 at 15:04 #

Oh, you mean do I want tickets to the best thing to happen to the earth since oxygen? Please and thank you.

  20. Heather November 25, 2013 at 15:19 #

Ah! I would love to win some tickets to the fest, my friends and I are all Social Workers and could really use some free beer to soothe our stresses!

  21. Nick November 25, 2013 at 15:23 #

Holiday Ale Fest is the start of something magical: Santas, elves, reindeer and more all enjoying delicious craft beer. And now with new glasses! Take ME!

  22. Ben November 25, 2013 at 15:26 #

This is the best beer event all year. I would love to go!

  23. Stefanie November 25, 2013 at 15:35 #

For the man who loves dark beers all year long, these tickets would be great for my boyfriend who has never been even though he is a native Oregonian.

  24. Jingle Balls November 25, 2013 at 15:36 #

I need this – I’m having a really rough month., I thought that my grandma done got run over by a reindeer near my house last Christmas eve. But we done saw her downtown working the corner with some fat guy named Santa in a red jump suit yelling Ho Ho Ho… Now you may say theirs no such thing as Santa, but as for me and grandpa we believe.

We done realized that was what he does the other 364 days of the year to buy all those presents. Don’t get me started on his elf fetish…

Love this event, if I get these ill go in my holiday best – full on Griswold.

  25. Chris November 25, 2013 at 15:39 #

Who wouldn’t want to go to this? Winter beers are the best!

  26. Chris November 25, 2013 at 15:42 #

    Beer = blood. Blood=life. Beer=life.

  27. Jamie November 25, 2013 at 15:47 #

I’ve been in the doldrums ever since the sun abandoned our lovely city. Give me something to look forward to that makes winter seem enjoyable!

  28. Edward Stratton November 25, 2013 at 15:54 #

I’m an Astorian and have already braved multiple winter storms, power outages and other wonders of winter this year. It’d be pretty awesome to go imbibe in the relatively mild climate of Portland, surrounded by cool people and good winter brews. It’d also be the first time I’ve had Astorian beer – Fort George or Astoria Brewing Company, I’m guessing – outside Astoria.

  29. Melissa November 25, 2013 at 15:58 #

Oregon has some of the BEST BEERS!!!! I love all the brewers festivals that Oregon has and I have never been to the winter brewers festival and I would Love to go!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE…….

Oh wow! I have to add to my Holiday Ale mug collection, and can’t help but get excited about Lottery sweater team photo and the squirty rinse station.

Lowered inhibitions in a giant adult playground, I can’t miss this.

  44. Jill Princehouse November 25, 2013 at 17:08 #

Winning tickets would be an awesome 50th birthday gift!

  45. Tim November 25, 2013 at 17:12 #

Up until 2 and a half years ago, I hated beer. Then, while on a backpacking trip down the Oregon Coast, I was offered a free (craft) beer after 20 miles hiking through dry sand. It was like sweet nectar. And so began my love of light, summer beers. Then came Oktoberfest, and my love of beer became a deeper thing, enjoying slightly darker, more complex beers. Now I want to complete my conquest of beer by diving into the thick, rich darkness that is winter beer (without doling out hundreds for entire bottles that I might despise. So pick me, so that I can increase my pallet and spread the love of beer further yet.

  46. Karen Gillid November 25, 2013 at 17:19 #

My favorite beer event of the year! Absolutely broke, you are my only hope, so please pick me!!!

  54. Leonard November 25, 2013 at 18:50 #

Winning these tickets would be a great gift to celebrate being cancer free!! December 2, 2010 I was told I had cancer (same day of the award).

Win or loose, that day has some tough associations. I’d rather remember winning this and taking a few coworkers to celebrate life and incredible beer!!

  55. Courtney November 25, 2013 at 18:58 #

The Holiday Ale Festival is the quintessential holiday event for Portland beer drinkers. It is a great place to meet up with friends and family to enjoy libations, libations and more libations! The winter beers are an amazing treat that we look forward to all year long! The heated venue and Root Beer garden are two things that make me excited as well. Of course, I will check my coat and bag so that the Children’s Cancer Association will be able to raise money for their amazing efforts.

  56. Jeremy Graham November 25, 2013 at 19:01 #

I’m coming all the way from Minneapolis for this festival! Bringing my girlfriend for her first taste of Portland! I cannot wait! I love the chewy, chest warming beers from this fest! I want to attend this fest because it’s in a great location and is filled with big beers and rad folks!

  150. Liz November 30, 2013 at 10:53 #

My best guy friend from high school lives in Portland. I had not seen him in many years, but we reconnected through Facebook and quickly resumed our friendship… Six months ago, after a long long illness… he checked in to the hospital again, this time with the expectation he was going to die. But, miraculously, he got a heart transplant instead! Now he is doing so great… it’s like he got a new life. We have become so close that our friendship has transformed to pure love. We have both figured out that after being slapped around by life for 30+ years, we are each others Big Love… Really it is like a chick flick movie…. He loves Portland and he loves the wonderful ( healthy in moderation) brews. In fact he told me all about this festival.
I sure would LOVE to surprise him with tickets to this fabulous event. Thank you for your consideration.

  151. Emmitt November 30, 2013 at 11:18 #

  166. Ashley December 1, 2013 at 17:18 #

My hubby’s birthday falls on December 3 and for several years, the only thing on his birthday list has been tickets to the Holiday Ale Festival! It’s his ideal date: dinner at Escape from New York Pizza, followed by lots of winter warmers at the Holiday Ale Festival.

  167. Chris December 1, 2013 at 17:49 #

This sounds like a lot of fun. I would love to win tickets!

  168. Charity December 1, 2013 at 18:04 #

  169. Andrea December 1, 2013 at 18:46 #

I have never been to the Holiday Ale Festival, and would love to celebrate the season Portland style with my best friend from Detroit! Beer me!

  170. Aimee December 1, 2013 at 19:42 #

Porters and Stouts are my favorite beers so by default this has to be the best fest of the year! Would also love to take some friends who can’t really afford the tickets. Tis the season…for drinking delicious cold ones!

  171. Tim December 1, 2013 at 20:01 #

Over from the uk would love to try some good beer Thanks

  172. Michael Grover December 2, 2013 at 07:28 #

I would love to attend courtesy of PDX Pipeline. I’ve attended this festival – my favorite of all Portland’s beer festivals – many years running, but I might have to miss it this year. I normally volunteer and get my free beer that way, but I wasn’t able to this year due to complications at work, so this package would really help out. Thanks!

  173. Alice Muirden December 2, 2013 at 07:36 #

I would like to attend and take my husband – he’s a true beer snob!

  174. Mike Borzy December 2, 2013 at 08:41 #

I would love to go to this festival as it would give me a reason to wear antlers socially.

  175. Rebecca December 2, 2013 at 10:48 #

I’ve been stuck inside studying for finals for my 2nd year of med school. My friends and I need to get out and celebrate the season and enjoy some great winter ales!!!

  176. Monica December 2, 2013 at 11:06 #

Looking forward to my first Portland holiday ale fest!! The best way to get into the holiday spirit!

  177. Brian December 2, 2013 at 12:09 #

    I want to enjoy
The tastes of many beers and
    Feel really good, man.

  178. jennifer December 2, 2013 at 12:12 #

I’d love to go to the holiday ale fest, because after working thanksgiving and black Friday in retail nothing sounds better than drinking delicious beer outside with good people <3

  179. Lindsey December 2, 2013 at 12:12 #

Why I would like to attend. Well even though I am probably too late. My reason is because I have never been. I am usually working or don’t have the money to spare on such a fun activity. Last year all my friends went and I missed out. I don’t want to this year. It looks like it would be such an amazing time!!

  180. Dana Paquette December 2, 2013 at 12:15 #

Ooh, ooh!! Pick me! The beer selection looks awesome this year!

  181. Shaun Kalis December 2, 2013 at 12:21 #

This is my favorite beer festival of the year!

  182. Deb December 2, 2013 at 12:25 #

I would love to able to take my partner to ones holiday event before I go to OH to be with family and grandchildren for Christmas. Her schedule is such that it makes it difficult to get to these events, as she works for a hospital and is “essential personnel”. It’s her favorite briefest, as well, and it would be awesome to treat her this one time.

  183. Katie Kiely December 2, 2013 at 12:31 #

This would bring me great holiday beer and cheer!

  184. Alena December 2, 2013 at 12:31 #

I have lived in the Northwest for most of my life (just across the pond) and Portland has been home for 5 years now. Only now have I finally acquired a taste for beer and I feel extremely behind the curve on this aspect of Portland’s culture. I need to get out there and get educated and get some real beer tasting experience!

  185. Brian S December 2, 2013 at 12:40 #

I’d like to go so I know what to give my brother in law, a home basement brewer, as a house warming present on their new home purchase. What better way than with fresh seasonal beer?

  186. Jennifer Teeples December 2, 2013 at 12:47 #

I hope I am not too late to win these tickets! We go every year and love it!

  187. Chip Ingram December 2, 2013 at 13:50 #

Nothing oils make me happier than a free invitation for beer. Yum

  188. Renata December 2, 2013 at 14:21 #

I will be wearing my ski suit to stay warm. Hope to win tickets to attend!

  189. Adam I December 2, 2013 at 14:57 #

Heading to Portland from North Carolina to help a friend move…and purchase/construct furniture from Ikea. Painful. Surprising her with tickets to Holiday Ale Fest (something I should not even know about being in North Carolina), pain dissipates.

  190. Sydney December 2, 2013 at 15:16 #

Much to my dismay, I have made it to a grand total of zero beer festivals this year. I’m already drooling thinking about all of the stouts that will be there….

  191. Alyssa Duran Pollard December 2, 2013 at 15:57 #

Love a good Whiskey / Bourbon Ale and they taste sooooooooooooooooooooooo good when it’s won. Victory is sweet!

After finally being together…. I found out my boyfriend’s job takes him out to Cleveland and this weekend is his last time coming out to visit me before he leaves for the east coast. I’d really like to go to this and show him Portland one last time!

  197. Diane December 3, 2013 at 10:58 #

It is my wife’s birthday weekend and she absolutely loves craft beer. She wants to attend this with a small group of our friends. Please don’t deny her the chance to attend this as we’ve never been able to make this beer festival:) Thanks

  198. noel December 3, 2013 at 15:05 #

Have friends coming in from Switzerland and really want to show off what we have going on here with big winter beers all in 1 place.

  199. Gus December 4, 2013 at 11:53 #

My brother is coming to visit from Kentucky and is thinking about moving his family out here. This festival could make it a reality!

  200. Jenine December 4, 2013 at 20:22 #

My husband and I LOVE beer. We live near the brewery blocks and have gone to most of the breweries there. We’ve also done the Ale Trail in bend and had a great time. More importantly, his birthday is this weekend 12/7. I would love to surprise him and take him to the Holiday Ale Festival.

  201. Brendan Smith December 5, 2013 at 15:09 #

The Holiday Ale Fest is the best beer festival of the year! Who doesn’t love special one-offs and barrel-aged versions of their favorite winter imbibables(word?). I’d love to be able to take a special someone with me with an extra ticket!

  202. Amanda R December 5, 2013 at 15:09 #

I’d like this! Went to this event several years ago and had a great time. Met some cool people. Would love to re-live that experience.

  203. Cynthia December 5, 2013 at 15:11 #

Winter ales are my favorite, I’ve always wanted to go to this, but never have.

  204. Dustin December 5, 2013 at 15:15 #

I would love to attend the holiday ale festival so I could try all the different beers and see if there are any that I can try to brew at home!

  205. Tyler December 5, 2013 at 15:21 #

I love the Holiday Ale Festival, but haven’t been able to go the past couple of years because it’s been a bit out of the budget. Pick me, pick me!!

  206. Ariel December 5, 2013 at 15:23 #

    #beerme because: 1. I’m poor 2. It’s my significant other’s birthday 3. we love beer. mmmm. beer. 4. I own a coat. 5. I’m thirsty?

  207. Nick December 5, 2013 at 15:28 #

Incredible event each year. I’d love a free pass this time around.

  208. ChrisG December 5, 2013 at 15:44 #

I missed this festival last year, and can’t wait for the festivities!

  209. Bonnie December 5, 2013 at 15:47 #

I like beer. I want to go drink great beer with friends. I won’t be able to go otherwise. I like wearing an ugly sweater and getting away with it.

  210. Rik December 5, 2013 at 15:56 #

My wife and I have some Friends in from out of town that are thinking about moving here and we would love to bring them to the Holiday Ale fest to persuade them. It was one of the first events we went to when we first moved here and we absolutely loved it. Please help us show them how awesome Portland is. Thx

  211. AshleyRae December 5, 2013 at 16:15 #

Pick me because waiting in lines sucks! >^.*<

  212. Heather Richardson December 5, 2013 at 16:57 #

Hi! My husband is a huge microbrew fan and has gone to the Holiday Ale Festival every year. We had our first child on October 23 and my husband has been a wonderful father to her. He has spent his days changing diapers, bottle feeding and staying up at nights with her. Since I am on Maternity leave, money is a little tight until I go back to work. I would love to win tickets to the Holiday Ale Festival for my husband so that he can have a much needed boys day out at one of his favorite events. Thanks and Happy Holidays : )

  213. Brooke December 5, 2013 at 17:03 #

    Beer, beer, beer, beer.

It’s about time I make it a holiday ale festival. Sunday fun day anyone?

  214. Stevo December 5, 2013 at 18:04 #

Nothing says the holidays like a mug of ales and santa’s little helpers scurrying about

  215. Greg December 5, 2013 at 18:18 #

I did this my first two years here, was absent last year. I would love to go back, even though now it means cabbing home rather than stumbling :(

  216. Sara Jasmin December 5, 2013 at 21:11 #

It’s my best friends 30th! I would love to win her tickets!

  217. Kate December 5, 2013 at 22:01 #

My wife needs a reason to enjoy Christmas. We’ve never checked out the Portland Holiday Ale Fest. Please help her believe in the magic!
