For families looking to make a new holiday tradition, The Oregon Garden in Silverton is presenting “Christmas in the Garden,” an event based on a traditional German Christmas market. Christmas in the Garden will take place from 4pm to 9pm every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from November 29 through December 22.

Families will board the Holiday Express tram, where they will be whisked through The Garden to arrive at the beautifully decorated Rediscovery Forest. They will walk through a candy-cane light tunnel to arrive in a winter wonderland, where they can shop from artisan vendors selling handmade goods – everything from driftwood Santas, candles, jewelry and pottery to yard art, teas and handbags – there’s even wreaths and swags created by the garden’s horticulturists.

While taking in the smells and tastes of roasted nuts and German foods, parents can drink traditional glühwein (hot spiced wine) and other spirits, while kids enjoy hot cocoa and assorted non-alcoholic beverages.

Everyone can warm up at fire pits scattered throughout the forest while enjoying lighted vignettes: elves in Santa’s shop, woodland creatures decorating a tree, even the house from A Christmas Story, complete with a glowing 9-foot tall leg lamp! Roaming carolers, school choirs, and acoustic guitar players will provide plenty of cheer.

Admission is $5, $4 for Oregon Garden members, and free for children 4 and under. Silverton residents receive $1 off admission each Sunday (must show I.D. with Silverton address). Each paid admission receives five $1 vouchers to be used at any booth in the market, including food and beverage. Vouchers may be used one per booth, per purchase, per person. Parking is complimentary.

Special events will take place on different weekends.

  • On November 29, the Garden will project the Civil War game on its big screen, courtesy of Wave Broadband; if you come dressed in Duck or Beaver logoed apparel, you will receive $1 off admission.
  • December 6 – 8, Santa Claus and his live reindeer will be there for visits; there is no official photographer for Santa photos, so parents can take their own at no cost. On December 14, there will be pony rides (free with a suggested donation of $1 that will go to benefit Canyonview Camp), and on
  • December 15 at 5pm, The Traveling Lantern Theatre Company will put on “A Christmas Carol Play,” geared toward families.

For a truly memorable experience, The Oregon Garden Resort is offering a special overnight package during Christmas in the Garden. The package starts at $99 for two people, which includes accommodation, two tickets to Christmas in the Garden, two beverages (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) served in a commemorative mug, continental breakfast buffet and admission to The Oregon Garden.

To book the package, see oregongardenresort.com.

Christmas in the Garden is generously sponsored by Linn Benton Tractor, Wave Broadband, Columbia Bank, Wither’s Lumber, The Oregonian, City of Silverton, Oregon Garden Foundation and Oregon Forest Resources Institute. Learn more at oregongarden.org.

  6. Kara C. November 26, 2013 at 15:55 #

I would love to win tickets so my family and I could go! We have a four year old who is very much into this Christmas season and he thinks every thing is so magical right now. We also have a one month old baby whom would love all the lights and music.

  7. Sarah H. November 26, 2013 at 16:05 #

We went last year for the first time and loved it. Would like to take our three year old again this year. But, my husband is in the military and has a federal job. The furlough days are making things tight financially for us. Winning tickets would help out a lot. Plus, I am a military brat as well, born in Germany, I get super excited for German food :).

  8. Carolyn November 26, 2013 at 16:06 #

The sense of community in the garden thru nature and twinkle lights, sets the spirit right! What better reason!?

  9. Wendy Lawson November 26, 2013 at 16:09 #

I would love to do something special with my family as this is the last one as our oldest son is leaving for the Army next year. What a memorable way for our family to celebrate Christmas…

  10. Heike D. November 26, 2013 at 16:18 #

Who doesn’t love the Oregon Garden? People from Siberia!

  12. Isabel November 26, 2013 at 16:26 #

I am new to Portland and have become a glutton for community! I have evicted my tv and started appreciating beautiful things in the world! Festivities delight me! My eyes are not starry enough! Spiced wine is literally the best beverage of which I have ever partaken! (Par…took…?)

If given tickets I will show up in homemade sweaterpants.

  13. Lindsey November 26, 2013 at 16:28 #

I enjoyed working as a volunteer at the Oregon Garden until I moved to the Coast in 2001. It’s time for a visit and see how the Garden as grown!

  16. Wendy S November 26, 2013 at 17:40 #

We just visited the Garden for the first time in October and loved it! Would very much enjoy going back to experience the Christmas lights & festivities.

  17. Nancy C Clark November 26, 2013 at 18:03 #

I volunteer at the Garden, and truly love it…so my sweetie and I had our first date there. He is a teacher and was so impressed that he planned a field trip for his class and raved about how great it was for everyone. We have been there several times now and consider it to be our special place. I would love for us to bring my family so all of us could have fun together at this special event.

  18. Tasha November 26, 2013 at 18:07 #

Love the Oregon Garden…and would LOVE to it at Christmas time. Pick me, pick me! :-)

  19. Shauna November 26, 2013 at 21:37 #

My family and I are searching for ways to stay connected as much as we can. My babies are growing up and becoming busy. They are 19, 16 &14. We try to set aside Sundays to get together and do something fun together. Usually it is one child at a time, but because Christmas is moms favorite time of year, I am requesting all be involved since I am still the boss lol. This is how I found this wonderful event.

Our family is largely German decent but I don’t know much about the culture. I think this would be fun and educational at the same time. I’ve never seen a live reindeer before. How fun.

Good luck to all. We all could use fun for free in this economy. :-)

  20. Stacie November 26, 2013 at 21:55 #

  25. Shannon November 27, 2013 at 08:28 #

I just learned about Christmas in the Garden a couple weeks ago and it looks absolutely stunning! It looks like a great way for a family to celebrate the holidays. I believe I should win because, after 4 years of separation due to a hasty and drawn out divorce, my family has been reunited and will be spending this Christmas together! Since it has been 4 years since our family has been together, we are trying to establish some new traditions and I believe Christmas in the Garden would be an awesome tradition to get started!!

  26. Amber Williams November 27, 2013 at 09:00 #

Hello…. I would love to win tickets to the Oregon Garden’s Christmas Markets event! I have been lucky enough to have been to Germany during the Christmas season and loved the environment. (Also loved the gluhwein!) I live in a community in North Portland with many ladies (older) that don’t get out too much. Many don’t have cars or extra money to do great things like this! When I first saw that this was happening, I started talking about it on my facebook page. Now, I have a whole host of ladies that want to go! So, I could use the tickets and put them to very good use! Thanks PDXPipeline for making them available…. Happy Christmas to all!

  33. Fred November 27, 2013 at 14:28 #

My husband’s family is from Germany and I am always trying to find a way to impress my mother-in-law. This experience plus the German Marketplace, will clearly win me the best daughter-in-law this holiday season. Please let me suck up to my husbands family by choosing me a winner!

  40. Tracy Lea November 27, 2013 at 20:06 #

Gorging on GLUWEIN, fried foods, and juicy sausage for an evening is a perfect way to enjoy a German Christmas in Oregon without the jet lag! Petting Reindeer and buying handmade holiday decor in a fab location…truly the best Christmas ever.

  41. Heather November 27, 2013 at 20:29 #

Yay this sounds awesome, would love to go with my fam!

  42. Rebecca Feucht November 27, 2013 at 21:11 #

Thanks for the chance at free tickets. My husband, 2 boys and I just moved here from Alaska, and I’d really love to take them somewhere extra Christmassy since we are now without snow. This is close to their grandparents, who we will be celebrating Christmas with for the first time. One son is now 3.5 and is surprising me every day with his increasingly good memory. This is really prime time to step up the magical experiences.

  43. Melissa November 27, 2013 at 21:23 #

  69. Lydia December 1, 2013 at 21:08 #

I would be very appreciative to win tickets to Christmas in the garden, especially to surprise my fiancé. My fiancé and I use to live in Germany after his service in Iraq. When we lived there we loved to stroll through the markets and enjoyed gluhwein as well. Both of us are very interested in German culture. This would be great for us to reminisce upon our years together and maybe make him feel that there is both a sense and respect for German culture here in America. He has been having a tough time adjusting from having been in combat, this would mean so much to us. Thank-you for this opportunity.

But she isn’t hip enough to go on-line and enter cool contests like this so I have to do it for her. :) So pick my Grammy! I call her Grammer Jammer!
