The first time I saw James Brown live in concert was at the Civic Auditorium (now the Keller) in Portland when I was 8 years old (now 36). My dad insisted that my funk education begin early and often. I still remember James throwing of his regal robes to reveal his purple silk shirt as he raced back to the mike, dropped into the splits only to spring back up and immediately dive into “I Feel Good!” I’ve always been proud to celebrate my birthday just one day after the Godfather!

Cuz I need to work on my camelwalk!

As the hardest working fan of the hardest working man in show business, I have a public service announcement for all the funkateers out there. Do you’re self a favor and listen to Revolution of the Mind: Recorded Live at the Apollo, Vol. III. It’s the finest JB I’ve ever heard! Desert island material! You’ve got JB, BOOTSY, MACEO, FRED, and CLYDE all in front of a live audience. Mr. Dynamite and the ’71 JBs play the superbaddest funk while taking time to remind all the hotpant wearing ladies to “never let nobody tell you how to where yo pants!” For goodness sakes, take a look at those cakes!
