The 13th Annual Northwest String Summit (NWSS) returns to Horning’s Hideout (North Plains, OR) with the finest acoustic pickers and standout electric bands from July 17 – 21, 2014. Located just 20 miles outside of Portland, OR, Horning’s Hideout stands as one of the most scenic festival sites in the country; NWSS is the only music offering this year taking place at Horning’s Hideout.

A family-friendly and locally-sourced festival, NWSS caps its capacity at 4,500 attendees to ensure an intimate experience for all festival-goers at an incredible ticket price. For more detailed information, please visit: www.stringsummit.com.

The 13th Annual Northwest String Summit is hosted by Colorado-based Yonder Mountain String Band; arguably the top touring neo-bluegrass band in the world. Yonder will perform three nights of music, and additional standout acts at this year’s festival include Sam Bush Band, Railroad Earth, The Wood Brothers, Steep Canyon Rangers, Greensky Bluegrass, The Infamous Stringdusters, Danny Barnes, Shook Twins, Wicked Messenger (Feat. Adam Aijala & Ben Kaufmann), Jeff Austin and The Here & Now, Dave Johnston’s Banjo Strummit, Fruition, Darol Anger, Dead Winter Carpenters, Grant Farm, Lil Smokies, Blackberry Bushes, Scott Law w/ Sam Grisman, Tyler Grant, & Andy Thorn, Scott Law Bluegrass Dimension, Burle and the No Brainers, Allie Kral & Friends, Burle w/ Travis Book & Anders Beck, The Student Loan, The Rumpke Mountain Boys, Gipsy Moon, Pete Kartsounes, and Sugarcane. The Motet will also perform a late-night main stage set on Saturday, July 19, 2014.

Northwest String Summit partners with singular Portland organizations, food vendors and emerging Pacific Northwest-based musicians as a way to support the various thriving local communities. Celebrated Eugene, OR favorite Ninkasi Brewing Company will offer exceptional craft beers onsite for the third year-in-a-row, including an exclusive small-batch NW String Summit Festival Specialty Brew called Clusterpluck Session Ale. Made with Northwest Pale Ale and Honey malts, Clusterpluck is a light and refreshing golden ale — the perfect accompaniment to a summertime jam session. Ninkasi will host the Northwest Local “Ninkasi Brewing” Stage @ Cascadia Acoustic Coffeehouse.

String Summit event promoter Skye McDonald comments about the forthcoming festival, “This year we are going into our 13th String Summit and we are delighted to refocus our programming on strings and acoustic music, the foundation of the festival. While there is plenty of pickin’ and singin’ at this year’s Strummit, when the clock strikes midnight, there are surprises in store that will ensure a huge rockin’ dance party that is sure to get the trees shaking and the peacocks howlin’ along with the crowd!”

This year, the infamous Further bus turns 50 years old, and for the third year-in-a-row, the current incarnation of the bus will be onsite at NWSS, along with bus owner Zane Kesey (son of Ken Kesey). Celebrate the 50th road trip to the 1964 New York World’s Fair with special intimate sets featuring select festival performers at the Further bus.

The following artisan food trucks will provide delicious food options for festival-goers: Bunk Sandwiches, Toast, Thai Volcano Express, Solarshots, and others TBA. Northwest Local “Ninkasi Brewing” Stage @ Cascadia Acoustic Coffeehouse will serve a variety of non-alcoholic beverages, baked goods, and snacks from local favorites such as Trailhead Coffee and Voodoo Doughnuts. Festival sponsors EcoProducts and Klean Kanteen are both on board helping reduce the overall carbon footprint of String Summit by providing reusable, compostable and recyclable cups and other tablewares and goods.

Now in its 11th year, the Band Competition at Northwest String Summit reigns in some of the hottest pickers from all across the country. The competition is in line with other top festival competitions, such as Telluride Bluegrass Festival and Rockygrass, and will occur on Friday, July 18, 2014. Four bands/musicians will be chosen by a panel of judges including members of Yonder Mountain String Band and festival staffers to compete for the winning crown (each band will perform for 10 – 15 minutes). The winner is awarded an opening slot on Sunday, July 20, 2014, and a paid slot at the following year’s festival. The Band Competition is a single mic only set-up, and only acoustic instruments are allowed (no DIs, no drums). Applications can be submitted until April 18, 2014; for more information please see www.stringsummit.com/band-competition-2.

  4. zoe May 5, 2014 at 14:04 #

YES PLEASE!!!! I have to miss Oregon Country Fair this year and I’ve heard that NW String Summit has a similar vibe – I would LOVE to go to this event!!! I will dance and sing and play my little heart out!

  5. Ryan May 5, 2014 at 14:12 #

I’ve got a friend coming from out of town and it would be SO SWEET to bring her to this amazing Portland event – neither of us have ever been before! I LOVE BLUEGRASS!!!

  6. Aneta May 5, 2014 at 18:41 #

I’d be super grateful for the tickets as this will be my first festival ever! I know the NW does it right. I would love to hear incredible musicians bring out their talent and joy! And of course, contribute with dancing, singing and love.

  7. Lindsey May 6, 2014 at 10:01 #

Would love to win these. Have been wanting to go to the NWSS for several years now. My friends have said it is a blast.

  8. Heather May 6, 2014 at 15:33 #

I have only been able to go to Strummit once. All my friends go, but I just can’t financially swing it. I have never wanted to win a ticket on this site more than I want to win this.

  9. Yume May 6, 2014 at 20:02 #

Strings + Hornings Hideout aren’t necessarily two things I usually think of in the same context, but it looks like a cool event!

  10. Ilesha May 6, 2014 at 22:28 #

    Sounds fun!

  11. Jon May 7, 2014 at 02:11 #

Lots of solid bands, great camping and a cool NW crowd. What’s not to like. Railroad always a great show, and plenty of others I’m sure I’d fall in love with as well. Would be a great compliment to what is looking like a very full summer.

  12. Cait May 7, 2014 at 11:57 #

After a year of farmin in WA, I’m coming back to Portland this month and sorely in need of some live music. Living so far from city centers has both its benefits and downsides. Lack of live music is one of them!

  13. Forrest G May 7, 2014 at 13:07 #

Will follow bluegrass wherever it may go!!!

  14. Kelly May 7, 2014 at 13:34 #

get a breath of that country air
breathe the beauty of it everywhere
    :o)

  15. Carey May 7, 2014 at 16:19 #

I’ve always wanted to go but can’t afford the passes. I would love to win!

  16. Jeremy May 7, 2014 at 16:39 #

I’m a mandolin picker and I have heard about this festival for years. I so dearly want to go, play in the jams, workshops, and above all the concerts!!!!
Can’t wait to see the Wood Bros, Sam Bush, Greensky, Stringdusters, Darol Anger, Yonder over and over and over again! It’s gonna be so good. Can’t wait.
Also, my brother’s coming to see what my life is like here. Get me those two tickets and I’ll make him sad that he’s way off in Colorado. That’s right, Telluride, Northwestgrass is where it’s at!!!

  17. Christine May 7, 2014 at 18:34 #

    1) We are longtime Summit volunteers, ticket buyers, and are not lookie-loo fans, we’re the real dedicated deal.
    2) 2.5 years of layoffs in the last 5 years has severely reduced our music budget.
    3) Your drawing day is my birthday!
Please make my birthday wish come true.

  18. Jessica May 7, 2014 at 19:13 #

    I love String Cheese!!!

Amazing line-up! I’m a long time guitar player and a flatpicking is my absolute favorite. I’m also a huge fan of these artists who’s never been to this festival, but has always dreamed of going. Who knows, maybe this could be the year?

I would love to attend this event. I was supposed to go and have friends coming in from out of town to attend but due to financial issues I won’t be able to attend after all. Bluegrass and a specialty brew is the magic I need to perk my summer up!

  40. Russell Thomas May 8, 2014 at 15:35 #

Because there’s nothing better than hearing folk music in the woods.

  41. Philip Snapp May 8, 2014 at 15:39 #

  42. Kieran mcmanus May 8, 2014 at 15:45 #

I’ve been trying to make it to this festival for many years. Strings make everything joyful. I hope I win tix because I’d love to bring my cello there and pick all night long and enjoy so much great music all day.

  43. Brandi May 8, 2014 at 15:45 #

The location, the music, there is so much to love about this festival! It would also be a great way to celebrate my July birthday since July 4th always over shadows it & makes me have to celebrate later in July.

  44. Krys May 8, 2014 at 15:50 #

Yeah Bud! I’d love to win free passes to this event. I can think of no place on earth that I would rather be than on Bob Horning’s land, surrounded by peacocks, and great music.

  45. Emily May 8, 2014 at 15:51 #

I have heard nothing but amazing things about this festival, this venue, and the fine community of people that bring it all together. Would love to create some new memories in the state that I love, with the friends that I love, listening to the music that brings me joy. Thanks for the chance, pdxpipeline! Good luck everyone!

  46. Bear Surasky May 8, 2014 at 16:00 #

I’ve been to SCI at Horning’s 10x, NEVER been to the Summit. Now that we have a BABY (Mandala Joy, born 2/19/14), we’re looking to take her to her first festival this summer. String Summit, here we come???

  47. Richard May 8, 2014 at 16:03 #

I worked at the Solar Root Juice Booth at one of the very first ones and then moved to Alaska for over a decade. Glad to see it’s still rolling except I have always felt bad because Mike Marshall wanted coffee really badly before his Psychograss set, but when we did not have coffee I tried to sell him on juice with ginger in it. He asked for a shot of ‘just ginger juice’ (which is awful) and off he went. Great show so probably not a bad thing, but blechhhh. I owe that man a cup of coffee.

  48. kasia May 8, 2014 at 16:06 #

I’ve camped there a few times and I always had a blast!!! I’m from Europe, currently discovering Oregon, and I’d love to experience the festival and have more fun before I go back home in August!

  93. Kathy L. Rankin May 10, 2014 at 11:47 #

I’d like to win for the following reasons: #1 I saw Ken Kesey’s bus at Lane Community College in the 70s and would love to see it again and if I can have a 70s true flashback to when I was
young, that is always a great thing before I get too old and can’t remember **** (I am closer to 60 now than 55)! #2 Because I am ALWAYS out of town when this is happening, and this will be the first time in almost ten years I am not going out of town (its closer than driving 350 miles) #3 Because I am a rock n roller and blues girl and want to grow into this music since I am thinking about moving to a place where this is the mainstay music #3 I went to be prepared for a long weekend of bluegrass music and see if I still like it after 3 days #4 I love KBOO radio #5 I love Oregon #6 I love the folks that love this music #7 I am tall and can take photos over the crowd? #8 Because I LOVE those old fashioned old time tunes and can dance to them #9 Because it is going to be a hot weekend and that this music goes will with hot weather and the last but most important reason #10 Because I feel lucky that my husband will go with me for the first time in 10 years over this particular weekend

  94. Nicole May 10, 2014 at 14:21 #

I would absolutely love to go because there’s nothing in the world that can beat great music, delicious beer, and a community of amazing people to enjoy the experience with!

I have just rolled out of the hardest winter of my life with 12 rounds of chemotherapy and living with my mom to take care of me (Im 26). I just found out that I am cancer free and this is my summer to celebrate! I have never been to any music festivals in Oregon and I decided that the best way to celebrate life is with music and dance and good food. I will make it there somehow, but I have not a penny to my name right now and I would love to have some help. Please share the LOVE! Love love love (and some more love)

  103. Andrew May 12, 2014 at 10:57 #

NWSS is our favorite festival we go to every year. Two of my good friends have met there life partners at NWSS and are now married. One couple just had their first kido. It brings good people together and the music lineup this year is the best I have seen. It would be awesome to win a ticket so we could bring our babysitter with us and watch my little girl experience the happiness we find there every year. The wife and I dancing away late into the night while our good friend (babysitter) stays at camp and takes care of our little girl sounds like a dream. Just Saturday night together would be awesome. Hope to see you all there!

My girlfriend works in special education and has had a rough year. I also work in special ed, so I don’t make a lot of money.

She loves bluegrass and could really this vacation. Besides, this festival would be a lot of fun! We would both love to go!

    Thanks for this opportunity

  105. Evan May 12, 2014 at 15:28 #

  108. Sian May 13, 2014 at 06:42 #

We love clustering in big or small batches and plucking is our favorite thing to do. Most of all, we love being out in nature where every one is just Plains happy, be it North or South!

  109. Julie Royall May 13, 2014 at 10:04 #

Dancing to these beautiful string players makes my soul smile (:

  110. Lauren Insalata May 13, 2014 at 11:46 #

I have heard nothing but praise for this festival and the venue is supposed to be amazing. I’d love to take my husband for his 30th birthday!

  111. JP May 13, 2014 at 12:48 #

I close my eyes….I breath…I dream of the smiles and smells and the joy…I hear the music and awaken to it dancing…!!

NORTHWEST STRING SUMMIT is one of the most life changing experiences I’ve had the opportunity of being a part of, my boyfriend and I are huuuuge blugrass fans and we play frisbee glof!! Hornings is so full of love and a mix of old and new friends, not to mention the best setting for some of my favorites *YONDER MOUNTAIN STRING BAND, GREENSKY, SAM BUSH, DANY BARNS, FRUITION, THE MOTET, ALLIE KRAL* and so many other bands that I cant wait to hear. What an honor to see them in such a magical explosion of sound and lights. Just the fact that this wonderous festival happens every year is enough for me to be happy but maybe we can get that extra help this year!

  113. Britni May 13, 2014 at 16:34 #

I really want to go because i love camping and being out doors. My family would buy tickets and go to because we are a very active family.

  114. Brittany May 13, 2014 at 16:58 #

I’ve never attended this event and I would really enjoy going as I really enjoy bluegrass. I would definitely try to see all the shows possible while there and it would make me extremely joyful to have such a fun, entertaining break from the 9-5 world. This would be the highlight of my summer for sure!!! I hope you all pick my lucky ears!!!!!

  115. Tavy May 14, 2014 at 19:36 #

I just moved out here away from my best friend, Yonder and Railroad Earth are our favorite bands. I think it would be awesome to surprise my friend with a trip out here some tickets. Plus I like seeing him intoxicated on everything; I like getting him to the point where his eyes are just blank, when that happens there’s nothing left but a man on a mission to party. He’s literally amazing.

  116. kate May 14, 2014 at 20:18 #

Who wouldn’t want to attend this?!

  117. Shawn W. May 15, 2014 at 09:56 #

I would love to attend with my husband. My daughter is going to florida to visit her brother and nephew. This would be a great event for my husband and I to reconnect!

  132. Andrew May 15, 2014 at 15:42 #

Been to almost every Northwest String Summit at Horning’s Hideout since the festival’s inception. Have met a large amount of great people who my wife and I still hang out with every year at this beautiful venue. NWSS always brings in a killer lineup and continually pushes to improve concert-goers experience while at the festival. This is one Portland event that bluegrass lovers should not miss. Even though I’ll be going either way, free tickets is always the preferred method. Cheers, music and peacocks for all. Good luck to everyone.

  133. Rachael May 15, 2014 at 15:53 #

I have never had enough $$ to be able to attend this event. Bluegrass and string has shaped my values and life, and the opportunity to be able to attend something like this would mean the world to me. I can’t wait to attend and really, really hope I win!

  134. Init Towinit May 15, 2014 at 15:58 #

I love hippies, dirty feet, dancing in dust clouds, $5 bottled water, endless jams, peacock’s and Folf!

  135. max May 15, 2014 at 16:08 #

its my wifes birthday that weekend! i couldnt think of a better way to spend the lovely weekend then at hornings hideout. amazing !sounds like a dreammmmmm! make it come true!

  136. bliss May 15, 2014 at 16:19 #

I would love to have a mini family vacation camping and being able to listen to music all weekend long.

  137. Gaby May 15, 2014 at 16:49 #

I was dying to go last year and the urge hasn’t gone away! Unfortunately, nonprofit salaries haven’t changed, either. Free tickets would be divine

  138. Les Hutchinson May 15, 2014 at 16:56 #

Well, I’m a percussionist and recovering drummer, and it is imperative that I closely monitor the comings and goings, the hemming and hawing, and the singing and sawing amongst these ominously gathering stringers. Why do they insist on meeting out in the forest? They call it a summit, I say it’s a possible conspiracy. Next thing you know, they’ll go all 101 Strings on us and ruin things for everyone. So, I implore you…on behalf of my beat-bashin’ brethren …let me attend, so I may observe and defend others from being strung along, strung up or strung out. Thanks for seeing things my way.

  139. Matt May 15, 2014 at 17:16 #

This sounds: perfect. Definitely one of those things that is ideal for summer. Outdoors, good music, good food, good people – would love to attend.

  140. April May 15, 2014 at 17:22 #

Round 2!! I miss going to Bluegrass festivals! I hail from Florida where I would go several tea a year, but after 4 years have yet to make it to NWSS. I would LOVE to make it this year to be able to be back in my element again! :)

  141. Jessica May 15, 2014 at 17:35 #

    I love banjos!!!

  142. Barbara May 15, 2014 at 17:51 #

If I don’t win, could you choose Christine who replied on May 7th? I just think that would be a really cool thing to happen on your birthday.

But only if you don’t choose me.

  143. C Terwilliger May 15, 2014 at 18:41 #

Sounds like fun, pick me ;)

  144. Dave Taube May 15, 2014 at 19:47 #

I’ve always wanted to attend the Northwest String Summit, but there was always a reason why I couldn’t go: I was out of town, relatives from out of town were visiting, my wife had to work, the dog ate my homework, the sun was in my eyes . . .

Well, this year, I have no excuse, so please choose me and I would be overjoyed to attend this amazing event!

  145. BettyJean May 15, 2014 at 21:43 #

    I need a reason to enjoy …

  146. Mark May 15, 2014 at 21:43 #

Horning’s Hideout=Party all night and day

    Oh yes, and then some.

  148. Manda May 16, 2014 at 00:26 #

I’m such a big fan of Hornings and Yonder that I’d like to attend end though Jeff Austin abruptly left the band… Plus, the lineup is obviously amazing! Sam Bush below my mind last time; glad he’ll be back. And RRE will be there. WOW, this is gonna be fun!

  149. Anna May 16, 2014 at 08:53 #

Wow, what a giveaway! I have ALWAYS wanted to go to Horning’s Hideout to see the peacocks and bask in what I am told is the most amazing music venue ever! I am pregnant with my first child and my husband and I could sure use one final hurrah before the baby takes over our lives! Thanks for the contest!

I would love to go to this and can’t afford it.

  156. Molly May 16, 2014 at 15:38 #

Just moved here from Colorado and would love to see how Oregon does bluegrass festivals (we’ve been spoiled by Telluride)! This festival is over my fiance’s birthday and Railroad Earth is his favorite! Would love to get him bday tickets, but I can’t afford these…

  157. john Anderson May 16, 2014 at 22:48 #

I can’t afford this festival. I’ve never been and it would make my year If I got these tickets.

  158. john Anderson May 16, 2014 at 22:48 #

I can’t afford this festival. I’ve never been and it would make my year If I got these tickets.

  159. Roxann May 17, 2014 at 09:10 #

My daughter is a huge bluegrass fan and is learning to play the banjo. Her boyfriend is an amazing musician and also a bluegrass fan. She’s a full time student and can’t afford tickets like these on her own. Plus these two are going through some challenging times. I think this would be a wonderful gift where they can forget everything else and go have a good time together enjoying something that they each love.

  160. Jimmy the breeze May 17, 2014 at 21:24 #

    Me so hornings!

  161. Will May 18, 2014 at 00:52 #

This is the premier bluegrass festival in the Northwest if not the whole West Coast! This years lineup features every neo- grass band that I have wanted to see but have never had the opportunity to. Seeing all those bands , live, in one weekend , at Horning’s Hideout would make my year.

  162. Kira May 19, 2014 at 11:57 #

This seems like such an accessible way to experience bluegrass! I’ve always been a fan on some level and it sounds like a lot of fun!

  163. Jesse O May 19, 2014 at 14:18 #

Nothin like sweet summer strumming to dance the days and nights away in the lovely forests of Oregon. Promise to bring and share lots of organic veggies from my super local, super yummy, organic veggie farm. Oh, and beer too, I will share beer!!

  164. Cory May 22, 2014 at 15:27 #

    String me up!!!!

  165. Cory May 29, 2014 at 15:36 #

    Ah Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!! String Summit rocks!!!!!!!

  166. Bruce May 29, 2014 at 23:23 #

Have never been but would love to go. Help me check one off the bucket list, please !

  167. Scott May 30, 2014 at 06:06 #

Love the strings and love Horning’s peacocks!

  168. Brittany Farrell June 8, 2014 at 10:50 #

I still have my two bracelets on from the last two years at NWSS! Anytime I have a difficult day, all I have to do is look down at my wrist and put myself back in the amazing setting of the music, happiness and bliss that emulates throughout Horning’s Hideout. Thanks for the opportunity to add on to these memories this year!
