World Premieres and famous faces are coming to Portland for an end-of-summer movie blowout. The action starts with actors, directors, crews and our own creative crowd converging at McMenamins Crystal Ballroom & the Mission Theater for parties, screenings, dancing and networking on Opening Night, Tuesday, August 26.
Haley Joel Osment (the Sixth Sense), Abby Elliot (SNL), Lorenza Izzo (Aftershock), Chris Williams (Dodgeball), and Isaac Feder (Dir.) will be among the members of cast, crew, and film fans on the red carpet at the Crystal Ballroom to celebrate the world premiere of their new movie, Sex Ed. The film follows Eddie’s trials as he realizes that the students in his after school detention program need to know the truth about sex. He might not be the best teacher, though. He’s a virgin. Director Eli Roth (Cabin Fever, Hostel) is also coming out for Opening Night, to see what the Portland film industry has to offer.
DJ Little Brother will provide the soundtrack and Hippoh Dance Project will perform before the screenings to start the party right as our guests enjoy a pre-film soiree. Opening shorts at the Crystal include Whisker (a man and his dog at a beard-growing contest) and Fletch (A Disc Golf legend’s epic journey). The world premiere of Sex Ed will be directly followed by a Q&A Session with cast and crew.
The festival is offering a second opening night feature film, Glena, at the Mission Theater a few blocks away, with pre-screening music by Adventure Galley. This documentary details the drama of a single mom from The Dalles, Oregon who gives her all for a shot at fame in mixed martial arts.
Opening Shorts at the Mission include Marooned (1950’s Earth—resources depleted, economic despair) and Punches & Pedicures (The small town of Defiance, Ohio is not as it seems).
When the films wrap up, party the night away with casts and crews in the extravagant atmosphere of the Crystal Ballroom. Dance, imbibe, and nibble your way among the beautiful people to give the first night of the Portland Film Festival a glamorous finish. Dress yourself up—whatever that means to you! This is Portland, after all. Music by Us Lights, Oh Darling, and DJ Little Brother.
The bash at the Crystal Ballroom is only the beginning a full week of everything film. You can view over 130 films—many of them Portland Premieres—plus workshops, parties, director talks, and three nights of free movies and music in Wallace Park and on the Waterfront.
