The H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary October 2-4th at the Hollywood Theatre! This year’s film offerings include over 50 short films, 6 features, and hours of panel discussions, author readings, live events, and special guests.

Guest of Honor Charles Stross joins us all the way from Edinburgh! He will deliver a keynote speech on Saturday and receive the Howie Award for outstanding contribution to the Lovecraftian horror genre. Stross is the Hugo Award-winning author of the Laundry Files series, Merchant Princes series, and many more.

Special Guest Jeffrey Combs will be joining us for the entire weekend! Combs has made numerous film and television appearances, but among Lovecraft fans, he is best known for his dry delivery and perfect comedic timing, bringing to life the beloved Herbert West in Stuart Gordon’s horror classic film “Re-Animator.” He was a guest at the very first H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival, and continues to be one of our most frequently requested guests, so we’re extremely excited to announce that he’ll be participating in this year’s festival! Programming will include dramatic readings and Q&As.

Programming Highlights:

  • Opening night: a Gala night at the cinema, 1920s style! With contortion, burlesque, and vaudeville, culminating in the 10th Anniversary screening of The Call of Cthulhu.
  • Guest of Honor Charles Stross will receive the Howie Award.
  • Actor Jeffrey Combs joins us for readings and Q&A throughout the weekend.
  • “Ask Lovecraft” Live! with Leeman Kessler.
  • Panel Discussions, readings, gaming, and vendors in the EOD Center!
  • Carbload for Cthulhu Author Signing Event on Saturday morning.
  • Pickman’s Apprentice Live Drawing Event.
  • Lovecraft Under the Gun 72 Hour Film Contest screening on Sunday.

I remember seeing the published works of H.P. Lovecraft in paperback with these LURID, wild-looking covers, in my older brother’s room. We used to watch CBS Late-Night movies with Peter Cushing….. the t.v. series “Night Gallery” back in the ’70s…… growing up in the Midwest, I assumed New England was full of: A. Fog, B. Mouldering mansions, and C. Gilled people walking around the countryside until they mysteriously disappear one night.

I can see how future writers like Steven King credit Lovecraft for their inspiration–such a small splash in his own literary circles, it appears HP Lovecraft is increasingly popular as the years go by, today.

I would LOVE to win this! Because, if I could and the organizers would allow it, I know a couple who usually go to this event every year, but they’re saving up for their impending wedding. No, I am NOT suggesting they get married with a Cthulu-themed wedding party! I am more than happy to go with this pass, and take one of them along, or give them an early wedding gift (heh heh….. see what I did there?) and transfer the passes to them.

Either way, you’re gonna be hard-pressed to find a bigger fan of HP Lovecraft than me, and those in my Inner Circle of Lurkers!
    The stars are right!
The Old Ones are, the Old Ones, were, and the Old Ones will be!

I’ve been to this before, and there are always some good movies I’ve never even heard of. I’ve got a friend who’s on the fence about going, so the tickets would be put to good use.

  16. Derika September 24, 2015 at 18:13 #

I’d love to win these passes because my boyfriend’s an avid Lovecraft fan, especially Cthulu(Halloween costume, plushes, books etc.), and so I’ve recently gotten into it as well. This would be an awesome way to connect with something we both love and have a fantastic October kick-off! :-)

  17. Larry September 24, 2015 at 19:47 #

I must answer the Call of Cthulhu at the Hollywood theatre! A terrific festival at this classic venue must not be missed!

I am known in several countries as hplovebug, so how fitting. And what a great way to kick off my birthday month!!

  21. oshey September 25, 2015 at 09:20 #

I’d mostly be interested in this event because my partner is a HUGE HP Lovecraft fan. He writes his own fiction, in fact, and knows more about horror films and literature than anyone I’ve ever met. My own interest in these things sparks from his, and what better way to indulge than to attend this festival!

  22. Ambika September 25, 2015 at 10:04 #

this would be so fun! Lovecraftian horror is the only thing that really scares me and being able to appreciate it with droves of other fans would be the tits.

  23. Paula Seid September 25, 2015 at 12:55 #

What a fabulous way to start off the scariest month of the year! This would be a fantastic treat!

  24. Alex September 25, 2015 at 14:20 #

    my body is ready

  25. Jen Stone September 25, 2015 at 14:29 #

I love me some HP! I have integrated “Moutains of Madness” in a high school lit course that emphasizes madness and the unreliable narrator. You should see the students’ Elder Thing art work on my walls during that unit! Beautiful monsters everywhere :-) hope I win!!!!

  26. Kylie September 25, 2015 at 17:25 #

I went to this a few years back and it was AWESOME. I’ve been wanting to bring friends to this for a while, but I never seem to have the cash when it rolls around again. I would love to win a pair of tickets to spread the horror. =)

  27. Leeanne September 26, 2015 at 05:01 #

I would love to surprise my husband with a ticket to this event! He is an avid reader/book collector who enjoys all things science-fiction! (He spends most of his free time searching for rare finds in used book stores.). He recently traveled to Spokane to the Sasquan festival (World Science Fiction Convention) with his buddy and had a blast. And after having a crummy birthday last month, I would love for him to win a ticket to this event! He’d be ecstatic, and I’d be so happy for him!

  28. Ari September 26, 2015 at 06:55 #

    This looks incredible!

  29. schpdx September 26, 2015 at 07:54 #

Jeffrey Combs will be there? Count me in! It’s been too long since I last went to the festival, so please ask the Selection Shoggoth to pick the winner with its most favorable (to me) tentacle!

  30. Megan Christopher September 26, 2015 at 09:07 #

I am a high school teacher and am totally broke right now since it’s the start of the year and, like most teachers, I spend a lot of my own $ to get things going at the beginning. I want to attend this SOOOOO bad but can’t afford it. PICK ME!!!

  31. Jennifer September 26, 2015 at 09:42 #

I would absolutely love to attend this event. This is right up my alley! All things I love!

  32. mauraborealice September 26, 2015 at 12:03 #

Need a compelling dose of his alternative reality…!

  33. peter hope September 26, 2015 at 13:09 #

I’ve never won anything like this. I hope I’ll get to experience films by the master. The only one I’ve seen so far was a type of spoof on the creature Cthulu, oh and I saw a tee-shirt that said “Cthuloops” the breakfast cerial

  34. Angela September 26, 2015 at 22:04 #

There are so many reasons that I’d love to win!

  35. Alexandria September 27, 2015 at 03:03 #

  37. Brad September 27, 2015 at 13:41 #

    J’aime le cinema!

  38. Sofia September 27, 2015 at 22:04 #

I want these tickets because (insert my sob little story), I’ve not felt well for months and watching short films is the one fun, sedentary thing I can physically do. I would be ever so grateful, truly!!!

  39. Meredith September 28, 2015 at 09:40 #

This week, at our respective physicals, my partner and I were each told we have to get our hearts pumping. But I abhor the gym and my partner is the only adult in Portland who can’t ride a bike. Then it hit us, The 20th anniversary H.P. Lovecraft Portland Fim Festival – the over 50 short films, 6 features, and hours of panel discussions, author readings, live events, and special guests, would be sure to get our hearts racing. Weekend passes to H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival at Hollywood Theatre is exactly what the doctor prescribed! So for our health, and our love of Lovecraft, we would be so grateful to win the two 3-day passes to HP Film Festival PDX, October 2-4, 2015 (Plus, our fellow late-20somethings postings their latest mile times and gym glam-shots would be so jealous)!

  40. David September 28, 2015 at 09:42 #

Has this event really been around this long? The Hollywood Theatre is full of secrets.
I would love to attend this event, especially since they are pulling out all the stops for their 20th.
This could take “Portland Weird” to an entirely amazing level!

  41. Sam Berg September 28, 2015 at 09:57 #

The Hollywood Theater is the perfect venue for a stylized event like this. Lovecraft would be proud.

As a fan of all things ghoulish, I look forward to this film festival with more glee than I’m looking forward to a month full of pumpkin-spiced everything.

  42. Lisa September 28, 2015 at 17:39 #

This looks so great, what an amazing venue and time of year to attend.

  43. robert richard September 28, 2015 at 18:16 #

I attended college in HP Lovecraft’s home townin Rhode Island…it has been a rite of passage to always seek out instances of his worldly (and other-worldly) creations! While last year’s gig at the Hollywood theater was great it appears you all have really amped up the event. It’s be Great to see it all, if possible!

  44. Margaret R. September 28, 2015 at 22:31 #

This sounds amazing; I want to go! I’ve loved H.P. Lovecraft since I studied his work in my Gothic Literature course. And my hubby has been talking about this for weeks ;)

  45. Christina September 28, 2015 at 23:02 #

Pick meeee! I promise to be adorable.

  46. Mikkel September 29, 2015 at 10:08 #

We are so excited for this event! I’ve never been to Lovecraft event but I am making my way through his works and I can’t wait to see the films and panels!

  47. Jessica September 29, 2015 at 12:54 #

This sounds like the best use of a Saturday one could imagine!

  48. Heather Hash September 29, 2015 at 13:58 #

I’ve been waiting for the H.P. Lovecraft film fest ever since Cthulhucon!! Ask Lovecraft is awesome!!

  49. jimbobber October 1, 2015 at 17:01 #

I think I’d like to attend because, with my short-term memory loss, short films should be just about the right length for me, and the Hollywood Theatre is my favorite place to go… I think… I’m not sure… I really don’t remember much about it.

  50. Giando Sigurani October 3, 2015 at 08:22 #

I want to go because I want to peer into the madness!
Everyone knows that when the Old Ones come they go for the sane ones first.

  51. Molly July 17, 2016 at 21:28 #

I want to take my sister for her birthday!
