Lan Su Chinese Garden
239 NW Everett St, Portland, OR 97209

A celebration for families and individuals, Lan Su Chinese Garden’s annual Chinese New Year celebration roars with lion dances, glows with lanterns and entertains with cultural activities, dances and demonstrations. A complete two-week schedule of events and more information is found at www.lansugarden.org/chinesenewyear.  All regular hour activities and events are free with garden admission or membership unless otherwise noted. Lantern Viewing and after-hour events require a special ticket.

Chinese New Year begins Saturday, January 28 with a full day of events and activities including Chinese story time, a wishing tree activity, a “Make Your Own Rooster Craft Activity,” Chinese Folk Art Demonstration, Chinese Yo-Yo performance and three lion dances from the NW Dragon & Lion Dance Association – and that’s just the first day! Additionally, on Saturday, January 28, every visitor that day will receive a hong bao, or traditional red envelope, containing a replica Chinese coin.

The festival continues with for 15 days with events including feng shui talks, Rooster and Chicken Show & Tell, Chinese calligraphy demonstrations, Chinese riddles & games and more.

Chinese New Year is sponsored by VT Group and Travel Portland with additional supported in grants from the Jackson Foundation, U.S. Bank Foundation, the Autzen Foundation, and the Herbert A. Templeton Foundation.

      I moved to Portland almost 6 years ago and have never been to the Chinese Garden what better time to see it then the celebration of Chinese New Year of the Rooster.

    I would love to share this with my children. Being a single parent is hard to go out and even have some fun as we just don’t have the funds to do so. We love going and learning new cultures and I know that each of us would enjoy this. Thank you for the chance and good luck to every one.

    We are driving up from southern Oregon to the festival and to celebrate the New Year with our 4 year old daughter. She’ll get a great look into our culture and loves the dragons. I’m biracial as well as she and we don’t have anything like this where we live. I was born in the year of the rooster so this will definitely be a great treat!! SO EXCITED!!!

    Please! We are 5 intern teachers from Spain and Colombia living in Portland for the school year. We haven’t had the pleasure to visit the Chinese Garden yet but it’s in our bucket list.
