Review: SCRAP’s first masquerade ball, “Incognito”

Posted by Julie Ma

Best Masks of the Night Contest_SCRAP_Incognito

It was a cold, dark and rainy night in Portland – the perfect atmosphere to kick off the Halloween weekend. Guests showed up at The Nines for SCRAP’s first masquerade ball “Incognito” in their home made masks and costumes made out of reusable materials. The evening consisted of silent and live auctions (amazing travel packages to Belize and Tuscany included,) sustainability awards to city leaders, a “best mask” competition, and really great music provided by the Transcendental Brass Band that got everyone dancing.

Guests were also treated to a sneak peak of a few couture designs from the Junk to Funk fashion show coming up on Nov. 14. Toward the end of the night, SCRAP’s Executive Director, Kelley Carmichael Casey, received a special award honoring her amazing efforts and commitment in growing SCRAP (very well deserved!). Events like this serve as a reminder for Portlanders to keep on living a lifestyle of reducing, reusing and recycling because it’s working and benefiting not only the community, but Mother Nature.

SCRAP diverts more than 50 tons of materials annually from the waste stream – so before you throw away this year’s Halloween costume, think about what items can be reused and/ or recycled. Not sure? Contact SCRAP at 503-294-0763 and they’ll help you.

Last Thursday: Vinyl Killers @ Goodfoot | Huge Art Show

Once again, the Goodfoot Lounge is pulling together a fantastic Last Thursday show with a ton of artists. If you haven’t seen the Vinyl Killers show before, it is one of the top attended shows they have. Add the Monkeytek DJ and Ryan Organ of Various and you most likely have the top Last Thursday opening of the week.

Are you on the twitter? Follow the @lastthursday account for Last Thursday updates plus use the #lastthursday tag when tweeting from the events.

From Goodfoot Lounge:
Goodfoot Vinyl KillersThe often imitated, never duplicated, OG vinyl art show, Vinyl Killers returns this October for another round of rescuing long forgotten records from the world’s landfills. This year there have been at least 6 other vinyl shows in North America alone and interest in the artform is at an all time high. After six annual shows and several touring exhibits Vinyl Killers remains committed to staying open call, independent, D-I-Y, and free of corporate sponsorship.

Since it’s inception in 2003 Vinyl Killers has showcased well over 1000 records painted by artists from around the world. A quick glance at the VK website shows both the genres global influence and the absolutely amazing things that are being done with paint and old records. Media recognition for this innovative show includes The Art Of Rebellion 2 and Stencil Nation, and features in numerous international street art magazines and blogs. In 2005 Klutch, the founder and curator of VK, had the room that he decorated with painted records for San Francisco’s Hotel Des Arts featured in Time magazine.

Vinyl Killers 7 opens on October 29th in Portland, Oregon at The Goodfoot. The Goodfoot is located at 2845 SE Stark St. and is open daily from 5 PM to 2:30 AM.

There will also be vinyl only selections from dj’s monkeytek, ryan organ and samizdat during the opening artist.
