Directors: Mariposa Film Group

Quite possibly as relevant today as it was on its debut over 30 years ago, WORD IS OUT: STORIES OF SOME OF OUR LIVES is widely considered the first feature-length documentary on gay and lesbian identity. Offering a vastly different perspective on gay and lesbian identity in America than was common at the time, the film presents 26 diverse gay and lesbian individuals who describe with profundity and humor their struggle to live a decent life in America, in spite of prejudice, discriminatory laws, and society’s unwillingness to afford them respect and equality.
MarchFourth Marching Band is thrilled to announce the release of the new album, “Rise Up.” The CD took almost three years to produce and it captures the band’s best compositions of the last three years. We’d like to thank Audiowells for great feats of musical patience, Andrew Jones for the stunning cover artwork, Andy Batt for the captivating portraits, and the fab duo at Dangerr Creative for putting it all together. To read the complete liner notes and info on all 13 songs, click here.

To celebrate the new release, M4 is hosting two CD release parties on November 19 at the Wonder Ballroom. Join us in celebration! The first show is kid-friendly and ends by 8:30 pm; the later show is 21+ with dancing til midnight (details).

Have your choice of beautiful ferns, mushrooms, squirrels, birds, trees, and other delightful native flora and fauna, AND do your good deed for the week! For $25, get the very distinctive outline of Mt. Hood and a BARK membership! Other tattoo designs will range in price from $40-$70. For a few extra dollars, the newly tattooed can have their picture taken by a BARK volunteer as a keepsake, and for the very enthusiastic, or the interested-but-hesitant, a silent auction will have tattoo gift certificates available for the bidding.

You’ll never feel better about getting tattooed!

For my fifth interview with the cast and writers of Fothing, I was given the chance to sit down with David Saffert, who plays the love interest of Addison in last season’s Fall of the House.

An actor who has been a part of Action/Adventure for less than a year, David has taken on the task of developing Fothing character Ben – based on Ben Stoddard, Creator/Director/Writer of the web series. Below, we talk David’s love of Kevin Crooks, the real Ben Stoddard and Miranda King vs. their characters on the show, and Wednesday night’s drinking fest at The Woods.

This is the least painful thumbnail Vimeo has given us. Maybe it realizes we’re coming to an end and is choosing to give me a break.

After the drinking party [and karaoke] this Wednesday night at The Woods – you can head to the show’s website [www.fothingtv.com] to watch the first five episodes (again!) and get your Fothing fix. The next new episode party will be Wednesday, November 25th at The Woods with the show premiering on the website Thanksgiving morning!

There was quite the controversy or rather misdirection last year about whether Santacon was in downtown or Hillsboro. Regardless of what happened, Antion definitely took place in North Portland. Description from Squid Vicious:

It started out slow but that could of been because everyone was arriving by max. Last years downtown Santacon had a buzz about it, and it was a crazy buzz. This years NorthPDX Santacon had some very familliar faces along with a friend feel to it. The crowd was a couple hundred deep and everyone liked being in a different part Portland.

Press release info from this year’s North Portland Santacon / NoPDX Anticon after the break…

So here it is, officially with permission from PDXAnticon.

We will have more information by the end of the week.
For now all you need is 12:30 on 12/5 at the Paul Bunyan.
Most stops will be by or near the Yellow line.

We are trying to get Santa’s to bring ‘yard art’ with them…. Just something to leave a trail of were Santa has been in NoPo or maybe to decorate some of the neighborhoods celebrities.
Be scared famous people!

IN A NUTSHELL
This is for adults – where guys & girls of legal age dress up like Santa and go cavorting around town for no better reason than that it’s huge fun.

ADVICE FROM SANTA
It’s a good idea to have someone’s cell number in case you get lost from the group or need to find a meetup point at an off-time. Network with other santas and get their numbers ahead of time.
Pay with Cash! – Just imagine if you’re a bartender trying to keep up with dozens of tabs and everyone looks like Santa. It’ll make life easier for you too because you won’t have to tab out when it comes time to leave. Some of the places on Santa’s list might be very quick stops – 1 hour or less – so running a tab will lead to time being wasted or you being left behind.

FAQ
Q: What is this?
A: This is your opportunity to be Santa!
Q: Is this some kind of political statement?
A: No. It’s fun and only fun.
Q: Who’s in charge?
A: Santa.

THE FOUR F**KS:
1. Don’t f**k with kids
2. Don’t f**k with cops
3. Don’t f**k with security
4. Don’t f**k with Santa. (it’s okay to f**k Santa)

Note: “f**k” is used here in place of the word “f**k”
We have done this because we were concerned that visitors to the site might be offended by the use of the word “f**k” explicitly.

RULES:

1. Santa does not make children cry. Really, if you see kids, don’t do anything to freak them out. Give them a nice smile and possibly a gift of some kind (toys, candy etc). Parents and tourists are a different matter altogether – adjust based on their attitude.
2. Santa dresses for all occasions. It’s December. Smart santas wear multiple costume layers. Dress to maximize merriment whether singing Christmas carols in the snow, or swinging from a stripper pole in a hot nightclub.
3. Santa doesn’t whine! We will be outside a lot and commuting mainly on foot – bring enough “snacks” to keep your pie-hole filled until we get indoors.
4. Bring gifts: NAUGHTY gifts to give grown ups; NICE stuff to give kids. Throwing coal at people is discouraged no matter who they are. YES THAT INCLUDES POLITICIANS. But giving out coal might actually be appreciated.
5. Watching santa get drunk and rowdy is fun. Babysitting santa while he vomits in an alley is not. Don’t be that santa.
6. Make sure you always pay for your beer and tip the bar staff. We want to be able to do this again so be polite and cultivate the goodwill of the local community.
7. Please pay for your drinks as soon as you get them. Santas get tired of waiting on other santas to clear their tab before being able to move on. This entire adventure should be cash only.
8. “No santa’s left behind!” – Don’t think only of #1. Santa is not inconsiderate of his fellow santas like that. Pick a few people you know and keep an eye out for them when it’s time to move to the next location. If you don’t see them, speak up so other santas know to wait a moment. Every santa should have at least 2-3 other santas they look out for and 2-3 that look out for them in turn.
9. Stay with the group. It’s not just a case of “the more, the merrier” – Santa is safer with large numbers of fellow santas and what one santa can’t achieve (or get away with) is a possibility for 50 or more!
10. Dress up! You don’t have to dress exactly like Santa proper. In fact, unusual interpretations of Santa-ness are much appreciated, both by those we bring joy to – as well as your fellow santarchists! Elves, reindeer themes etc. are fine as well!
11. Please remember that this is all about having fun. Most santas like to take their fun with a little alcohol which is fine. What is not fine, however, is getting completely sh#t-faced to the point that santas end up being abusive or violent. Remember that there is no “bail fund” for incarcerated santas and if you cross the line you’ll be on your own.
12. Santa doesn’t drink & drive and neither should you. If you’re going to drink you must make sure that you can get safely home without driving yourself. Check public transport, carpool with a designated sober driver, make arrangements to sleep over at someone’s place etc. Organizers sometimes try to coordinate transportation to get santas safely home. Check the message boards and groups for your local SantaCon to find out if this is being done in your area.
13. You MUST address everyone as “Santa.”
14. You SHOULD “ho-ho-ho” like Santa.
15. You OUGHT to give out gifts like Santa.
16. You MIGHT want to drink like Santa
17. Santa doesn’t talk to the press. Even “Ho-ho-ho” is too dangerous these days.
18. Santa doesn’t get arrested – please read Santa’s “four f**ks” (top right) and then read these guidelines one more time.
19. If you have reached this rule, it means you didn’t get locked into a loop reading the guidelines over and over again as per the previous rule.
20. Have a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Bombs Into You

I used to book and produce events back in the day. I did a couple shows with Bombs Into You because they always put on a great performance. I’m sure this CD release show will be no exception as I heard a bit of it played on KBOO (or maybe OPB) Sunday night. Good stuff for sure.

We are giving away a pair of tickets to this show. To win, just comment on why you would like to attend (or even some memories of seeing these guys/favorite lyrics). We’ll draw a winner on Thursday morning and email you.

Press release for show after the break…

PORTLAND, OREGON-BASED ELECTRONIC-NOISE-ROCK OUTFIT BOMBS INTO YOU CELEBRATE RELEASE OF “METAPHORICALLY YOURS [VOL 2]” ON NOVEMBER 19TH AT MISSISSIPPI STUDIOS

On November 19th at Mississippi Studios, Portland, Oregon-based electronic-noise-rock trio Bombs Into You will celebrate the release of their sophomore album, “Metaphorically Yours [Vol 2]“, the follow-up to “Metaphorically Yours [Vol 1].”

Also on the bill are Fast Computers and Double Plus Good. Cover is $8.00 at the door. Doors are at 8pm, show starts at 9pm, and is 21+.

Comprised of Jared Jensen (vocals, keys), Gage Choat (guitar), and Jon Jayne (drums), Bombs Into You deliver a sound that is equal parts melody and layers of sound, creating something that has garnered comparisons to “Nine Inch Nails meets The Faint” and “The Killers… if they actually cared again.”

A band as focused on their sound as they are having fun, when asked about “Metaphorically Yours [Vol 2],” Bombs Into You quickly jokes that, “it’s sort of like ‘Metaphorically Yours [Vol 1]‘, but different.”

A seven track collection of songs that range from danceable, melodic electronic-pop to beat-driven, noise-propelled rock songs, “Metaphorically Yours [Vol 2]” never overplays or sticks on one element too long, preferring to shake it up – for the betterment of the song and, ultimately, the album.

Recorded at various studios around Portland by the band, including Dig Recordings with owner/engineer Mark Kraeder at the board, Just Like Radiation, and The Holy of Holies, the band pulled the record together with the help of mixing engineer John Askew, ensuring the record, though lively and untamed, would sound cohesive.

FIST OF THE WHITE LOTUS (1980) Gordon Liu is out to avenge the destruction of the Shaolin Temple! But he’s up against an incarnation of the greatest villain in martial arts movie history: the unstoppable white eyebrowed Pai Mei (Gordon Liu played another incarnation of Pai Mei in KILL BILL VOL. 2) Lo Lieh plays the villain here, and he’s at his trash-talking, beard-stroking, kung fu annihilating best. He’ll even fight while he’s naked. But watch out for his kung fu crotch!

The opening credit sequence alone is worth the price of admission, and the fight scenes are choreographed by kung fu master Lau Kar Leung (director of 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN). Don’t miss this.
Advance tickets here: www.grindhousefilmfest.com

Its now cold, rainy, and getting dark at four pm. Winter is upon us, and Ray Davies singing about tea and a toasted butter currant bun/meant to compensate for lack of sun is beginning to seem very apropos. It’s the time of the season for drafting a survival plan for how to weather the next six months of steady rain. I plan on going to as many readings as possible, even if they are “cold” readings, like this one*.

While there won’t be tea or butter-currant buns – sorry – there will be free cupcakes and a fine line-up of folks from all walks of life to tell you their true stories; eight-minutes-and-under novellas – among them, recent Literary Death Match winner and author of Our Beloved 26th Riley Michael Parker; political blogger and future senator (we hope) Karol Collymore; and former corrections officer Rory Miller. Each guest will present you with an unscripted story that has never been iterated before any other theater audience, based on this month’s theme of Get Me Outta Here.

www.backfencepdx.com
November 19, at the Mission Theater (1624 NW Glisan).
Bar/food at 6 pm / Show at 7:30
Tickets $10 online; $12 at the door

* These are live stories without notes & memorization. “Cold readings” here refers to ones that are being performed with little or no preparation, i.e., “improv.”
