Dan just taped his first One Hour Special for Comedy Central, receiving a standing ovation after performing 65+ minutes of new material to a sold out house at the Bing Crosby Theater in Spokane, Washington.

This special is a follow up to his popular half-hour special, Comedy Central Presents Dan Cummins, which was voted the 3rd favorite 1/2 hour special in Comedy Central Present’s history by fans in the 2009 Stand Up Show Down. That 1/2 hour was made possible by Dan’s initial appearance on the first series of Comedy Central’s “Live at Gotham”, where one of Dan’s jokes was not only used to advertise his episode, but was used to advertise the entire debut season of the new stand-up show. Material featured in his 1/2 hour special and from the Gotham taping were released on his national debut CD, “Revenge is Near”, recorded at ACME Comedy Club in Minneapolis, MN, and released on Warner Brothers Records in June of 2009, reaching #7 on the Comedy Charts, and now being sold on itunes, on Amazon, and at Best Buy and various other retail outlets.

In addition to his Comedy Central appearances, Dan has performed on the Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Last Comic Standing, and Comedy.tv with Byron Allen. On November 26th, 2009, Dan will also make his debut on the Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien. Dan has also been invited to and performed at numerous, prestigious comedy festivals, appearing the Just For Laughs Montreal Comedy Festival in 2005 and 2009, and also performing at the Aspen Comedy Festival, Boston Comedy Festival, HBO Las Vegas Comedy Festival, and the Comedy Central South Beach Comedy Festival. All of these TV and festival appearances were made possible by a relentless touring schedule, with Dan headlining clubs and colleges in every state but Hawaii (c’mon Aloha State!), and various cities in Canada, since walking into a comedy club in Spokane, Washington for the first time on August 3rd, 2000.

After over 200 college shows since 2007, Dan was recently named one of the 2010 Hot Comedy Picks by Campus Activities Magazine, and he is currently filling up his 2010 calendar with more and more university shows. 2010 proves to be the biggest year so far for Dan, with more television appearances sure to come after signing with Creative Artists Agency in LA, where he’ll be moving in January to live with his girlfriend Kristin and her dog Tux.

In THE WHISPERER IN DARKNESS, folklore professor Albert Wilmarth investigates legends of strange creatures in the most remote hills of Vermont. His inquiry reveals a terrifying glimpse of the truth that lurks behind the legends.

Filmed in the style of the classic 1930s films such as Frankenstein, Dracula and King Kong, THE WHISPERER IN DARKNESS returns us to the golden age of movies for a thrilling adventure of supernatural horror. Filmed on location in New England in Mythoscope™ by the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society, THE WHISPERER IN DARKNESS treats audiences to a cinematic thrill not felt since the Hoover administration.

The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society presents its silent film of THE CALL OF CTHULHU. The famed story is brought richly to life in the style of a classic 1920s silent movie, with a haunting original symphonic score. Using the “Mythoscope” process — a mix of modern and vintage techniques, the HPLHS has worked to create the most authentic and faithful screen adaptation of a Lovecraft story yet attempted.

Spring has sprung and the Market has too. Like the blooming of new buds, so are the new artists at the Portland Saturday Market.

As you explore this year’s market, keep an eye out for: 1. Elzbeads, where you will find beautifully intricate lampwork beads from artist Elzbieta Gerla. Gerla is a big fan of color and her beads are pretty enough to wear alone on a simple chain or bracelet, but they are even better in a set. Each bead is a tiny work of art made by using a torch to heat colored glass rods which are melted and rotated around a stainless steel rod or mandrel. After that, Gerla adds her own personal flair, from delicate flowers carefully arranged on single beads to bright, vibrant sets adorned with so many ruffles, curlicues and dots, they are like a jazz band at Mardi Gras.

New to Portland and to the Market is: 2. Frances Cameron of Cygnet Silks, is a recent transplant from Illinois who joined the Market almost immediately after moving to town. Having grown up in the Midwest, Cameron was enticed by Portland’s “vibrant artistic community” and its appreciation for the arts and handmade things. She brings with her an array of beautifully hand-painted scarves, wraps and hankies in patterns so rich, they look almost like liquid. What starts as plain, white silk is painted and dyed in a stunning assortment of colors using a French method known as the Serti technique. Every piece is individually designed, so each one is both striking and unique. These days, Cameron is inspired by the spring flowers blooming all over town and the flashes of color she sees in the eyes of people she meets.

Finally: 3. Flying Frog Apparel, a perfect spot to check out if you’ve got a budding artist of your own. Besides being a busy mom, artist Hayley Hacker knows how to satisfy a scrupulous sense of style with her adorable appliquéd t-shirts, bodysuits and accessories. Each of Hacker’s pieces is handmade using organic and recycled materials, and each is unique with unexpected patterns, contrast stitching and 3-D elements. What’s more, she also creates color-your-own t-shirts with gorgeous designs that your little Picasso can fill in all on his or her own.

So, if you haven’t ventured down to the Market yet this year, what are you waiting for?

Game Preview: Portland Timbers vs Houston Dynamo

Game 10: Portland Timbers (2W-5L-2T) @ Houston Dynamo (3W-3L-2T)
Tuesday, May 15, 5:30 p.m.
Previous match-up(s): 8/14/11 2-1 Away Loss, 10/14/11 2-0 Home Loss
Listen/Watch: ROOT Sports, 750 AM: THE GAME, PortlandTimbers.com

----------

The Portland Timbers take on the Houston Dynamo today at BBVA Compass Stadium in Texas, only three days after the Dynamo christened their new home with a 1-0 win over DC United. Despite an improved effort against the Crew in their last game, the Timbers are still desperate for a win. Except for an own goal by Chance Myers, the Timbers are scoreless in the last three games and their offense will need to find the finishing touch if the Timbers are to have any hope of coming away with three points.

Houston, for their part, will not make things easy on the Timbers. In Major League Soccer, new stadiums have often invigorated their home teams, as Timbers fans will recall from the team’s run of five home wins last year or, more dramatically, Sporting Kansas City’s reversal of fortunes going from last place to first in the eastern conference after finally opening up Livestrong Stadium eleven games into last season. The Dynamo did not look like world beaters in their first game in BBVA, relying on a Brad Davis wonder goal to break the deadlock, but they rarely looked like conceding as well.

Last season, the Timbers suffered two heartbreaking losses to Houston. The first was thanks to a long range bomb by the freshly traded Adam Moffat that was in the running for the goal of the year, while the second was a lackluster home loss that came in the midst of the Timbers ultimately unsuccessful push for the playoffs. The Timbers have something to prove here and how they show up against a Houston team that will be on a high while competing in their new digs will say a lot about a team whose toughness and mental fortitude has been questioned since the start of the season.

The Timbers have been forced to reshuffle their line ups time and again this season due to injuries and poor play throughout the field. While John Spencer searches for the correct group to break the Timbers streak of ineffective play, the inconsistency on the pitch has hampered the Timbers this season. Team captain Jack Jewsbury slotted in to the right back spot against the Crew and looks to do so again tonight, while across the back line at left back Steven Smith will likely get his second start since joining the team in the place of Mike Chabala. While Smith does have a pedigree that Chabala can’t match, his inclusion in the starting eleven would mark the Timbers nineth group along the back line in eleven games.

Dominic Kinnear, the Dynamo’s manager and former mentor to John Spencer, has been around MLS for some time now and has a knack for bringing in players that fit with his system. Houston feature stalwarts like striker Brian Ching, who has been capped 45 times for the United States, and winger Brad Davis, last year’s leader in assists, driving their attack; while at the back the Dynamo have the duo of Geoff Cameron and Bobby Boswell, both of whom have made the MLS All-Stars, in the center of defense. Kinnear’s philosophy and style of play is very similar to Spencer’s, which is not surprising given that Spencer was his assistant coach for five years, and the Timbers will have a narrow field the same dimension as Jeld-Wen to play on tonight as a result.

STRATEGY

On offense, the Timbers will need to feed Darlington Nagbe and Kris Boyd the ball to their feet. Both are excellent finishers but neither will thrive with the ball being chipped into the box, particularly against the excellent aerial skills of Boswell and Cameron. Nagbe in particular struggles to win balls played in the air, but with the ball at his feet he can easily create the separation needed to get off a shot.

On defense, the Timbers will need to put pressure on the Dynamo midfield. Houston have a knack for scoring from distance and the Timbers have shown a weakness to long range shots in the past. Combine that with Houston’s forward pairing of Ching and 2nd year man Will Bruin, both of whom are very strong, scrappy players, and the Timbers will need to be careful of the opportunities they afford the Dynamo to take a shot or get a cross off into the box.

TIMBERS LEADING SCORERS

Darlington Nagbe – 3
Kris Boyd – 3
Kalif Alhassan – 1
Andrew Jean-Baptiste – 1

UPCOMING GAMES

5/20 vs. Chicago Fire
5/23 vs. Valencia (Friendly)
5/26 vs. Vancouver Whitecaps
6/17 @ Los Angeles Galaxy
6/24 vs. Seattle Sounders

TIMBERS PREDICTED LINE-UP

Perkins (GK)
Jewsbury (RB), Danso (CB), Mosquera (CB), Smith (LB)
Songo’o (RM), Palmer (CM), Chara (CM), Wallace (LM)
Boyd (F), Nagbe (F)

BOTTOM LINE

One point against the Crew last week seemed like a step up, but one point at a time is not enough to move the Timbers up the standings and into playoff contention. With only two games before a long break, the Timbers need to get some points if they want to be positioned for a successful second half of the season. Houston has not looked great this season and they are beatable, especially only days removed from a grueling game against DC United so the Timbers will need to find a way to win.

VENUES:
McMenamins Kennedy School Theater: 5736 NE 33rd Ave.
Opening Night Party: 1207 SW Washington St.

A four-day celebration of queer culture, identity, and politics.

This year QDoc: The Portland Queer Documentary Film Festival celebrates it’s sixth year with a new venue and a dozen films that celebrate queer identity, culture, relationships, politics, history, and history in the making. QDoc, the only festival of its kind in the U.S. made up of entirely queer documentaries, takes center stage May 17-20, 2012 at McMenamins Kennedy School in NE Portland, Oregon.

The Festival opens with star power and a two-step with the documentary WISH ME AWAY about the groundbreaking Nashville country singer Chely Wright. As the first country star to come out as openly gay, the film follows Wright as she struggles with her sexuality and her Christian faith in a conservative environment not known for tolerance. Following the film, festival-goers are invited to the Opening Night Party hosted by renowned Portland restaurateur Chris Israel (Grüner) at the as-yet-unnamed event space adjoining his upcoming new restaurant Corazon. Chely Wright will be in attendance at the film and party.

The Festival continues with documentaries that examine queer identity. GIRL OR BOY, MY SEX IS NOT MY GENDER (dir. Valérie Mitteaux) depicts the lives of four trans men working to define femininity and masculinity through queer expression and the support of their friends and family. Subject Lynnee Breedlove in attendance. In THIS IS WHAT LOVE IN ACTION LOOKS LIKE (dir. Morgan Jon Fox) a 16-year old Memphis boy named Zach Stark tells his story of being forced by his parents to spend 8 weeks in a Christian program for gays, Love in Action, and the chain of events that happened after he posted a message on MySpace about entering the program. This single post led to an outpouring of community support and national headlines (Good Morning America, CNN, The New York Times, Time Magazine, and The Advocate among others). Director Morgan Jon Fox in attendance. DIFFICULT LOVE (dirs. Zanele Muholi & Peter Goldsmid) takes viewers on a journey to South Africa with photographer and activist Zanele Muholi as she uses her photography to expose the black queer experience on her part of the continent. Playing with DIFFICULT LOVE is NOT A MAN IN SIGHT (dir. Mette Aakerholm Gardell) a documentary examining gender, sexual orientation, and group affiliation through three generations of lesbians in Norway.

Putting a spotlight on history-in-the-making subjects, QDoc presents a Sundance U.S. Documentary Special Jury Prize winner, LOVE FREE OR DIE (dir. Macky Alston). This story centers on an Episcopal Church in New Hampshire that came under fire when it became the first to elect an openly gay man, Gene Robinson, as a bishop. While Gene never intended to be the poster boy for gay bishops, he has become a beacon for others while raising questions about religious institution’s role in fostering homophobia and hatred. Director Macky Alston in attendance. QUESTION ONE (dir. Joe Fox and James Nubile) chronicles the fierce and emotional battle that took place in Maine which, as the first state in the country to legislatively grant same-sex couples the right to marry, went on to quickly repeal them in a referendum. National issues and the equality movement in Oregon will be discussed in a panel discussion facilitated by Basic Rights Oregon following the film. Directors Joe Fox & James Nubile and subject Darlene Huntress in attendance.

QDoc wouldn’t be complete without a celebration of queer cultural icons. JOBRIATH A.D. (dir. Kieran Turner) uncovers the amazing story of a musical prodigy who aspired to be the first openly gay rock star in the early ‘70s. KING OF COMICS (dir. Rosa von Praunheim) brings to light the artist and creator of one of the most successful German comic book creators, best known for books like “SchwulComix (GayComix)” that offer a twisted take on queer culture. Equal parts Tom of Finland and R. Crumb, König’s comics are sexually charged and often politically incorrect, portraying daily routines of gay life alongside serious subjects like AIDS.

Other highlights in the line-up concentrate on relationships. THE LULU SESSIONS (dir. S. Casper Wong) is an enormously compelling and tender-hearted film about an unconventional love story—an intimate and deeply personal portrait of two people confronting a terminal illness with honesty, laughter, and love. LA BOCCA DEL LUPO (dir. Peitro Marcello) is a Proustian story about a couple falling in love both behind and in bars, and finally sharing a home together.

The Closing Night film is the long awaited documentary about the LGBT movement pioneer, Vito Russo. VITO (dir. Jeffrey Schwarz) recounts Russo’s life — from his time as a film student living in Los Angeles to his presence at the Stonewell riots in 1969 and then to his creation of “The Celluloid Closet,” the first book to critique Hollywood’s portrayals of gays on screen. Russo went on to became one of the most ferocious critics of the Reagan administration’s response to the epidemic and a tireless advocate for people with AIDS. Director Jeffrey Schwarz in attendance.
