A. King Can Sing

Her guitar gently weeps, and her violin smiles sad melodies across strata of music. Sleight jazz hides under waves of a present guiding bassline, often times running from wisps and whistles to climbing a wall built of organ pipes, distorted amps, and bent keys competing with A. King’s less-than-mellow-while-still-spot-on voice.

Weaving spot on melodies between her six strings with pent energy, Ashley wraps softly haunting lyrics around an energetically crying violin on her track “You Don’t Mind”. A tambourine chases her violent strum that keeps you at the edge of your headphones till a break of echoes charms your ear like a surrounding line of smoke tip-toeing through delay before crashing back into a burst and end.

Drawn to the Northwest following a brick road of family and friends, A. King’s saintly spirit will fit right in in Portlandtown!

A. King’s next show: February 9th @ Ash Street Saloon

Seeing her is like a glimpse of a nymph (one who listened to a good bit of Beatles), her small stature a misleading element of her raucously perfect musical wave that combines the sound of destruction and whispers of sonnetesque ballads.

True Stories is a surreal sociological musical – or a magical-realist anthropological music video – in which David Byrne floats about a fictional town called Virgil, Texas, wearing a cowboy hat and bolo tie. Byrne, who wrote and directed the film, was artistically ahead of his time with this 1986 cult classic – but hasn’t he always been ahead of his time? Here he boldly breaks and expands cinematic convention and stretches the concept of genre to its limits, but to suggest that True Stories is artsy-fartsy indie-film stuff would be like calling

The Talking Heads music ‘esoteric.’ In fact, the film is hilarious in a perfectly dead-pan `sort of way, with Byrne playing a mysterious but gregarious visitor to a small Texas town – the kind of place where people wear leisure suits with golf shirts and Velcro-sneakers, a place that operates around its shopping mall and silicon-microchip factory. He speaks mostly to the audience, delivering insights on contemporary American life and dismissing insight just the same. On the subject of highways, for instance, he mentions that “some would call them the cathedrals of our time. Not me.” The film also features John Goodman, in one of his first prominent roles, playing Louis Fyne, a kind hearted bachelor looking for love in all the wrong places. In many ways, the film is about people like Louis, trying to find love in a factory or at a karaoke bar, people with real human emotions leading a “scientific lifestyle.” As one woman, a gossipy assembly line worker, puts it, “I like a hairy man. Jesus was hairy.”

But Byrne is also interested in the transformation of the American landscape. He begins the film with a brief history of Texas – from the time it was covered in water, then populated by dinosaurs, then fought over by Indian tribes, Spanish colonists, Texans and the American government. He sees America as a dynamic, fluid being that is growing and changing, and finds in the fictional town of Virgil a place that embodies the change of the 1980’s. He’s not necessarily concerned with political or economic transformations, but how the changing social climate affects people’s interactions with themselves and with each other. As he strolls through a shopping mall, for instance, he notices that “shopping malls have replaced the town square as the center of many American cities. Shopping itself has become the activity that brings people together. In here, music is always playing. What time is it? No time to look back.”

This month at Sequential Art Gallery
{328 NW Broadway #113}
SELECTED WORKS BY DEREK STUBBS

February at Sequential Art Gallery will showcase the comics art of Derek Stubbs. Interested in more than just “final” art, Derek is intrigued by the process of creating. The “how” of the art is as fascinating to him as the “what.” To that end, his solo show at the gallery is his attempt to share the process of putting the pieces together. The show will open First Thursday on February 4th, 6-10pm, and run through the end of the month.

After a short stay at the New York State Psychiatric Institute in 2006, Derek found that marrying words and pictures was what he wanted to do with his life. The result of this has been his immersion into the world of comic art, and projects like TheMin, Mr. Popularity, Oh Snap! A Series on the Hazards of Portland, Filthy Comics and others. He moved from New York City–his home for the previous 15 years–to Portland in 2007, and is glad he did.

<<<<<<<Tons of Portland First Thursday art openings after the break…

The Performers: Globe-trotting jazz trumpeter Chris Botti returns home to Portland with his stellar ensemble of back-up musicians. Please note: The Oregon Symphony does not perform.

The Program: A wide sampling of the jazz standards and pop tunes Botti’s fans have come to expect.

This is another homecoming for Botti, who was born in Portland and raised in Corvallis and whose Oregon roots run deep: As a teen in Portland: he performed at Delevan’s, played in Ron Steen’s band and studied with former Oregon Symphony principal trumpeter Fred Sautter.

Botti performed two holiday concerts with the Oregon Symphony in December 2008. This time it’s just Botti and his backup band; the Oregon Symphony does not perform.

Vote yes on “Spesus Christ.” Whenever I listen to this band i get an immediate feeling of the camaraderie circulating through the group. Both on and off the stage. This always makes for a better feeling show and when people feel good they look good and more importantly in this arena they sound good. From the crooning on “Truce” to the seemingly impromtu trip-hop spoken word interlude that laces “Airport Gate.” It is inevitable that at some point during their set your eyes will be wide shut and and your foot jamming along to the bass line.

All this happens before you start dancing your face off. This band does a brilliant job of balancing ambient background music you can just kick it to with a style that may perhaps incite one of those head back introverted dance frenzy’s that only you and whatever god you pray to can understand.

The era of the folk orchestra hasn’t given up its bloom with the new decade. Layers of musicians pile into tiny venues and pack stages like nearly lit matches huddling in a matchbox – percussive smashing of random objects, toy pianos and brass instruments shining against the floating tones of melting guitar strings wrapped around violin whispers! In the vein of Zach and everyone’s favourite Sufjan comes one Berkeley via Missouri composer that has landed in Portland like an origami crane folded from sheet music. Having toured through Portland with Bearkat in 2008, Kyle Butz set his sights on this town, orchestrating his return by way of cross-continental tour, gaggle of musicians and accordion in tow.

Bootz Orchestra channels large Balkan beats through the four strings of Kyle Butz’s ukulele, buried alive beneath a shuddering brass section and the soaring violin of Ashley King. “Mollifying Whirl,” from Bootz’s EP Bony Jars, begins with a slight eruption of trombones and trumpets waltzing with sparse piano over ukulele strings peppering subdued drumbeats. The slow building climb and escape between recurrences of soft strums behind slightly thought-strangled singing brims with suspense, cascading into a soft-landing at its end. The running bass of “Our Daughters” chases the metronome-banjo that leads a cloud of instruments, outrunning the “grey ghosts in tight knitted bones” of the first line, weaving between a wave of circling notes and glockenspiel droplets. The EP

Bony Jars is available now with new songs in the works. Keep your eyes alive for the orchestra cavorting around town with accordions, banjos, guitars, ukuleles, trombones, violins, tambourines, melodicas and all!

Next Show: Feb. 19: The Parlour – Bootz Orchestra w/ Johan

What is Massive? – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVDVTWXNbEk

Tony Touch: TONY TOUCH aka Tony Toca continues to be a force to be reckoned with. TONY TOUCH, an icon in Hip-Hop and in the Urban Hispanic genre plus seasoned player in the game, is a true innovator and has revolutionized the DJ game over and over.

From his legendary mixtapes, to his skills on the 1’s and 2’s, to becoming Hip-Hop’s most recognized DJ. This C.E.O/Artist/ Producer, is now currently working on his eighth commercial release titled “The PieceMaker 3 …The Return of the 50 Mc’s” and is expected to make history once again.

In 2000, Tony released “The Piece Maker” on Tommy Boy Records. This album sold 400,000 units worldwide and featured legendary artists like Big Pun, Cypress Hill, Wu-Tang Clan, Busta Rhymes, Eminem, Gang Starr and much more. The single “I Wonder Why” featuring Total was a hit and the video featured cameos from John Leguizamo, Rock Steady Crew, Grand Master Flash, Marley Marl, DJ Premier and more. Since then Tony Toca has released “The Piece Maker 2” which also had an all-star line up with features such as P. Diddy, Fat Joe, Sean Paul, Snoop Dogg and legendary Ruben Blades. Toca is also known to represent the urban Latino community to the fullest with his Spanglish lyrics and Salsa roots. It is the result of growing up with Salsa at home and Hip- Hop influence in his lifestyle. We are excited to be bringing him to Portland to headline Massive!

Epp Saheed: You’ve probably heard him on FreshSelects or Jammin 107.5. If not you are about to hear a lot more of him with future projects T&E (Tope & Epp) and on the collective recording compilation for Wajeed of Platnium Pied Pipers.

Dr. Adam: Massive resident DJ Doctor Adam, whose mixtape for street wear site Karmaloop hit over 20,000 downloads (grab it here if you don’t have it – http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?ixmkyxx5i5f) will be holding it down as he always does for PDX’s fashion show/dance party. Those that don’t know his name must not live in Portland as his name is everywhere! Massive is the perfect opportunity to see what he does perfectly, which is make you want to dance.

Massive 15 will also feature a fashion show by local boutique/designer Gypsy Yardsale and will be hosted by local personality Ronin Roc.
