Grand Opening of the “Heart in Oregon” MAiZE, Sept 4th, 2010

Portland’s original cornfield maze ventures into its twelfth season at The Pumpkin Patch on beautiful Sauvie Island in Portland, Oregon. This year the Portland MAiZE has teamed up with “Heart in Oregon” to create a giant puzzle in the towering corn field.

Since 1999, thousands of people from all over Oregon have attended this popular fall event making it a fun-filled family tradition. According to Craig Easterly, founder of the Portland MAiZE, this year’s Heart in Oregon MAiZE will be offering the usual exciting physical and mental challenges of previous versions, with the added bonus of following your heart to the actual “heart” within The MAiZE.

“I like to create designs that resonate with Portlanders and our friends in the greater Portland area. So, when Chris Bucci approached me about bringing his Heart in Oregon sticker design into the field, I thought that it was the perfect expression of not only how I feel about my home state, but I think all Oregonians do” explains Easterly. “The Pumpkin Patch and Sauvie Island are two of the state’s many outdoor adventure gems.”

The MAiZE staff knows folks have more fun without a map of the maze, but will happily provide a “passport” that holds trivia, which, if answered correctly, will guide maze-goers correctly through the mile or so of twists, turns, and dead ends. Special for this year’s MAiZE, a Heart in Oregon passport will test visitors’ knowledge about Oregon.

Saturday, September 11th, the MAiZE will offer free admission to all Veterans and public service personnel with valid I.D. as a way to say thanks for all their hard work and sacrifice.

Easterly encourages everyone to come out early this year while the sun is shining to enjoy the sunny days and pleasant evenings in September.

The MAiZE is open from September 4th, 2010 through October 31st, 2010. Hours are Sunday through Thursday, 10am to 6pm, and Friday and Saturday, 10am until 10pm. Additional nighttime hours will be available for large groups by reservation. Cost of admission is $5 for ages 6-12 and seniors 60+, $7 for ages 13 and up, and FREE for ages 5 and under. Discounts are offered for groups of 25 or more with advanced reservations.

Timbers Close Home Schedule – And PGE Park – Tonight Against Puerto Rico

On Sunday, PDX Pipeline noted that it was taking care of business time for the Timbers.  And there’s no doubt that business was seriously taken care of during Portland’s 3-0 romp over Crystal Palace Baltimore. The win, which featured a pair of clinical finishes from Bright Dike and a nice slotted shot from Ryan Pore, extended Portland’s unbeaten streak to 5 games and closed the month of August at a sterling record of 3 wins, 1 loss and 2 draws.

September figures to be tougher though, as Portland hits the road for three of its four games this month.  Indeed, tonight’s date with Puerto Rico will not only be the final home match of Portland’s regular season but also the final time the Timbers will play in PGE Park as currently constructed. With any home playoff games moved to alternate sites like the University of Portland’s Merlo Field or Hillsboro Stadium, this is the last chance this year for fans to soak up the full Timbers experience.  That’s a shame, because improved pace and play during recent Timbers matches – Sunday against Baltimore in particular – have produced an electricity throughout PGE Park that’s no longer limited to the always-rowdy Timbers Army.

Given the circumstances, the Puerto Rico Islanders are walking into a lion’s den. But they do so with a swagger, as they are undefeated (3 wins, 4 draws) in their last seven games, finding the net a combined seven times in their last two wins over Carolina and FAS. That momentum and offensive potency combine to make tonight’s sendoff less “fond farewell” and more “battle royale.”

Slayer and Megadeth are thrilled to announce the new, confirmed routing for the American Carnage North American Tour, which will commence with the rescheduled Canadian Carnage East dates in Quebec City on Friday, July 23.  Slayer will then head to Europe for a run of festival dates, returning to kick off the American Carnage leg in Albany, NY on August 11. The American Carnage Tour will mark the first time that Slayer, Megadeth and Testament will have toured the U.S. together since 1991′s epic “Clash of the Titans” tour, making this truly a “must-see” event. Slayer and Megadeth have already massacred territories together outside of the U.S., first with four explosive dates in June 2009 across Western Canada – “Canadian Carnage” – the first time the bands had toured together anywhere in 18 years – and then six co-headlining “Carnage” dates in Australia followed last October.

According to various Canadian press outlets last summer:  “It was a night of thrash impossible to trash…” “Tales about war, death, destruction, Satan, aliens and serial killers have never been so much fun…”  “The two heavy metal heavyweights…went head-to-head on a level playing field.  Both bands brought their ‘A’ game.  And the results were anything but pretty – unless you include pretty freakin’ loud and pretty freakin’ awesome.”

Legendary thrash metal titans Testament, whose latest award-winning release (2008 Album of the Year, Metal Hammer’s Golden God Award) The Formation of Damnation, displays them as the quintessential modern heavy metal band, whose experience and accumulated skill allows them to attack with reserves of anger, energy and finesse that make them more powerful than ever.  Lead singer Chuck Billy says, “Uniting these bands is the heavy metal event of generations.  We are so proud to be a part of it.”

Portland’s Best Outsider Haunts opens First Thursday, September 2nd from 6-10pm, and runs through September 25th.

Sequential Art Gallery + Studio is located in Old Town Chinatown at the Everett Station Lofts, 328 NW Broadway #113. Open for regular gallery hours and gaming every Saturday (11am-5pm) or by appointment. The gallery showcases local artists who explore the concept of sequential art, which is loosely defined as using consecutive images to tell a story. ART EVENTS NOT TO BE MISSED!

KATAMARI @ Floating World Comics: [by Jason Levian] I’m very excited to announce the details of our First Thursday art show coming up September 2nd of this year.  The show is called KATAMARI and it’s based around my favorite video game, Katamari Damacy.  My friends and I lovingly refer to it as the “Zen” video game even though the intense gameplay would often accelerate our heart rates to dangerous levels.  The creator, Keita Takahashi, once stated that he created the game to bring about world peace.  If everyone played the game no one would want to fight wars anymore. We have Katamari and Noby Noby Boy inspired artwork from over 30 artists and illustrators. There will be a mix of original pieces and also archival prints of the digital submissions. This benefit show is a not-for-profit fundraiser. 100% of the proceeds will go to JOIN – a local nonprofit organization that works to “connect the street to a home”.  The prints will be available for sale on 1st Thursday.  The original art will be sold on eBay during the last month of September as part of the fundraiser. (Side Note from PDXP: Pipeline will have a few (4 or 5) T-shirts at Floating World starting tomorrow. So get one while you are down there!)

THE NEW BROW OF PORTLAND @ PCPA: [by Chris Haberman] NEW BROW is a new defining term (from Europe of course) to define art of the “outsider” or “low brow” nature, for the next generation. These terms, outsider and low brow, are a bit demeaning in juxtaposition to the gallery world, and the “fine art” made in these areas today, especially in Portland, in comic realms, poster art, tattooing, paintings, and fine art, are very much a skilled effort, or a NEW BROW approach to art, versus the Old World definition of “Outsider” – art made by the insane. Although, still within the realm of “edgy”, pop-art defines our world, and these are some of Portland’s best, and definitely my favorites of our city.

Todd Glass launched his career in comedy at age 16. Since that precocious start, the Philadelphia native has developed into a polished performer with a bent for inventive material that often mocks the conventions of standup.

His television appearances include “The Sarah Silverman Show,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” “Showbiz Show with David Spade,” “The Bonnie Hunt Show,””Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn” and “Politically Incorrect.” With his unique delivery and divergent style of witticisms, Todd quickly becomes a host and viewer favorite.

Todd has also become a veritable fixture on Comedy Central, recently headlining his own half-hour standup special “Comedy Central Presents: Todd Glass.”

Demonstrating his unwavering innovation, Todd co-created, co-executive produced and starred in Todd’s Coma, a pilot produced by Adam Sandler’s company Happy Madison for TBS. The much-praised, slightly twisted show, in which Todd’s curious family conducts interviews with visiting celebrities while he lies in a coma, attracted such celebrity guests as Ben Stiller, Fred Willard, Herb Alpert, Ray Romano and Arianna Huffington.

Labor Day in Portland

After a rainy June and sizzling hot July and August, this year’s labor day weekend takes on extra weight as everyone tries to squeeze every last drop out of the Portland Summer.

Labor Day is a perfect time to hit some of the key Portland hot spots while the weather is nice or hit the road for a quick getaway before the march to fall (and Football season) gets underway.

Here are some Portland Labor Day Weekend ideas to help you get started in the right direction:

In Portland:

Distillery Row - Portland has long been mecca for microbrews but it’s quickly becoming the epicenter of a new wave of small artisan distilleries. Check out New Deal for some of the best Vodka in the city, Hose Spirits Distillery for things you won’t find anywhere else, then catch the easy to miss Stone Barn Brandyworks for spirits that will literally may you say WOW.

Portland Classical Chinese Gardens –  this urban oasis is not just for tourists and many Portlanders miss out on one of the most authentic and serene Classical Chinese Gardens in the US. Hit it in the morning and beat the crowds or sip tea at the end of a long day in the tea house and watch the world go by.  Website: portlandchinesegarden.org

Portland Tub and Tan – Get your summer fling in under the wire with Portland Tub and Tan’s outdoor private hot tubs. Turn up the tunes, flick on the outdoor fireplace and enjoy one of Portland’s last hot nights.

Outside of Portland

Whitewater Rafting on the Deschutes - Maupin is only 2 hours away and an all day, Deschutes river white water rafting trip is well within reach.  You can shred your way through class 3 rapids and be home in time for dinner.

Wild Waves in Seattle – Lets face it, if you’re over the age of 16, Oaks Park just doesn’t cut it.  Relive your misspent youth with one of the Northwest’s only real amusement parks.  Hit the roller coasters in the morning and then get drenched at the water park as the afternoon starts to heat up. Theatre performing excerpts from the company’s fall production of Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty.
The annual tradition of launching the Oregon Symphony season with FREE parks concerts continues with the much anticipated Symphony performance at Tom McCall Waterfront Park. No tickets are required. Bring chairs or blankets for lawn seating.

Closing festivities include the traditional grand finale – Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture with an elaborate fireworks show, complete with military canons from the Oregon Army National Guard 218th Field Artillery.
