November 6: PDX Salon presents An Evening of DIY at The Woods

PDX Salon presents An Evening of DIY
8pm November 6, 2009 at The Woods http://www.thewoodsportland.com/
Admission sliding scale $10-20

Destination DIY producer and creator Julie Sabatier hosts an event that will bring out your inner innovator: live demonstrations and interviews about how to make radio, how to make a terrarium and how to make bacon. Delicious sweet and savory treats will be served. A silent auction will include many fine items to enhance your DIY projects or spark a new one. The show will be book-ended by performances from musician Leviethan (http://www.leviethancecil.com/) and musicians/visual artists billygoat (http://www.myspace.com/onaloop), who will show off their gorgeous stop-motion animation and give us a window into how they do what they do themselves. Do you DIY? Step into our recording room to tell us about it and you could end up on the next Destination DIY podcast!

Now in its fourth year, Destination DIY has grown up from Portland's grassroots to become a full-fledged documentary series, featuring recorded field sound, in-studio interviews and personal narration blended with music from Pacific Northwest artists. In over 30 episodes, Destination DIY has covered a diverse range of topics from zines to backyard chicken coops to home funerals. This event will kick off a campaign to raise funds for the next two hour-long episodes of the show.

Oregon Public Broadcasting is very keen on showcasing these episodes once they've been produced. Destination DIY has been featured on public and community radio stations across the country and has also found thousands of listeners through its Web presence. Anyone can access the free podcast through iTunes or the Destination DIY web site. Please visit desintationdiy.org to listen to past shows and to find out about past guests, the show's companion zine as well as our many local and national supporters.

We are excited to partner with PDX Salon, a project started by three Portland women with the desire to create a forum for discussion where different types of artistic media coalesce to create an event rich with food, wine, art, and music. These ladies draw inspiration from the salonnieres of Paris who sought to gather stimulating people under one roof, partly to amuse one another and partly to refine their taste and increase their knowledge through conversations, music, and the lubricating effects of great food and drink.
