TONIGHT OFFICIALLY BEGINS THE 2010 JACKPOT RECORDS FILM AND MUSIC FEST! Come out to the Hollywood Theatre at 7 pm for a free screening of You Weren't There: A History of Chicago Punk 1977-1984 (120 minutes)

YOU WEREN'T THERE: A HISTORY OF CHICAGO PUNK 1977-1984 is a rare glimpse into a truly one-of-a-kind American underground music scene that documents the impact that the punk movement had on the Windy City.

Though often overlooked in the annals of rock history, Chicago served as an important early supporter of this burgeoning and controversial music genre that could be violent and unsavory at times, but was always tempered with large doses of humor, art, and intelligence.

Features vintage concert footage of, and interviews with, Articles of Faith, Naked Raygun, Big Black and more…

Cracking the Egg: The Untold Story Of The Nightcrawlers (40 min)

7 pm, Free

CRACKING THE EGG de-scrambles the story of 60s garage upstarts The Nightcrawlers and their circuitous road to cementing a spot in rock 'n roll history. Setting them apart from the many requisite high-energy R&B cover acts of the day, this Daytona Beach five-piece injected their sets with catchy originals. Amongst many notable tunes was a lightly cast number called “Little Black Egg”. This song, with modest chart success, would go on to be covered and recorded by a wide spectrum of bands from the 60s up to today.

At once singular and microcosmic, watch as fans, fellow musicians and the bands themselves give insight into this, one of the strange stones that make up rock history.

Do It Yourself: The Story of Rough Trade — BBC (90 minutes)

7 pm, Free

Part cautionary tale, part success story, DO IT YOURSELF: THE ROUGH TRADE STORY charts the extraordinary tale of Geoff Travis and company's legendary indie record store and subsequent start up label. This documentary laces together energizing archival footage with contemporary interviews framing a classic tale of earnest intentions confronting the inevitably dreary fiscal and commercial realities of the music biz.

Johnny Marr, Jarvis Cocker, Travis himself and many other players and observers of the label weigh in with genuine insight that frames the historical context of art/punk, DIY and also explains how Rough Trade's foray into independent distribution in the 70s and 80s changed the modern musical landscape. Live clips of Buzzcocks, The Raincoats, The Fall, a healthy swathe of The Smiths and endless others.

Playing Live: Jandek and Thurston Moore

7 pm, $20.00 (Advance tickets available at both Jackpot Records locations)

This year the apex of our Free Film Festival is neither a film nor free. We are proud to spotlight a live, living confluence of art and intrigue with a Jandek performance featuring Thurston Moore. The Sonic Youth front man and renowned collaborator joins onstage with the enigmatical musical force known as Jandek for an evening of unannounced intention.

The removal of parameters is the unstated allure of a night like this, the result being something you have not heard before and will not hear again. It promises to be a singular evening of artistic collision and a wholly unique musical conversation as these performers find their way through the set and allow us to listen in. Frankly quintessential.

Mellodrama–The Mellotron Movie (80 min)

Q&A with Filmmaker Dianna Dilworth following the screening

7 pm, Free

MELLODRAMA looks at how a backyard, home grown invention from the 1950s transformed the face of music production today.

From its modest beginnings in a California garage to appearing at Royal Albert Hall, we follow the journey of an ingenious contraption called the Mellotron. Essentially the first sampling instrument, this complex keyboard and its haunting sound has changed and influenced the production and texture of popular music. This groundbreaking device has been put to prominent use on scores of hits and classics ranging from The Beatles' “Strawberry Fields Forever” to King Crimson's “The Court of The Crimson King” to Kanye West's “Gold Digger”.

It's a fascinating story of the 50 year and counting odyssey of musical invention, revolution, betrayal and rediscovery from the Beatles to Black Sabbath to The Flaming Lips and more.

“The Mellotron stays cool.” — Brian Wilson
