YWCA of Greater Portland Hosts Day of Workshops to Take a Stand Against Racism
Over 250,000 individuals across the country — and numerous Portland organizations — expected to take a stand
The YWCA of Greater Portland is calling on all individuals to take a bold Stand Against Racism this Friday, April 30, by participating in one of the many events open to the public in Portland. The YWCA hosts a day of workshops and activities commencing at 10 a.m. with the YWCA Board of Directors and YWCA Executive Director Eric Brown hosting Mayor Sam Adams, Multnomah County Chair Jeff Cogen, and Commissioner Deborah Kafoury, who will deliver City and County proclamations and sign the Pledge Against Racism.
The schedule for the remainder of this public event at the YWCA of Greater Portland building, 1111 SW 10th, Portland, includes:
10:30 a.m. Gymnasium
Aztec Dancing Presentation
11:00 a.m. 3rd Floor Conference
State of Black Oregon: Myth of Post-Racial America, Urban League
12:30 p.m. 3rd Floor Conference
Making the Invisible Visible, Native American Youth Association
2:00 p.m. 3rd Floor Conference
Overview of Asian, Hispanic, Afro American and Women communities, Oregon Advocacy Commission
Throughout the day participants at the YWCA Stand Against Racism event will have the opportunity to:
• sign a pledge to end racism
• take part in an activity
• pick up information from workshop speakers
Over 20 local organizations and individuals in Portland will take a Stand Against Racism simultaneously with others throughout the country. The Stand Against Racism movement is a collaboration of 71 YWCA Associations nationwide and their 2,000 community partners. Over 250,000 people are expected to take a stand on Friday. Each participating site chose their own way to recognize a Stand Against Racism at their own location.
