Grand Puba: Perhaps best known for his work with Brand Nubian, Grand Puba first made his recording debut with the group Masters of Ceremony. Its album Dynamite (1988) was hailed by critics, but the group soon disbanded, and Puba joined forces with new friends and emerged as the lead emcee of BN. After their innovative and versatile debut album One for All, which covered areas from reggae-influenced hip hop music to new jack swing—Puba embarked on a solo career. He became a member of BN again in 1997, recording a few tracks for various soundtracks leading up to the full-length album Foundation in '98. In 2009, Grand Puba released his fourth solo album, Retroactive, featuring production from hip-hop veterans like Q-Tip, Large Professor, Kid Capri as well as his fellow Brand Nubian's. Puba also appeared on the heavy posse-cut “Fresh” together with Cormega, KRS-One, Big Daddy Kane, DJ Red Alert and Parrish Smith of EPMD.

Ohmega Watts: What does one say about Ohmega? He's a writer, producer, mc, designer, photographer, wordsmith, poet, dj — an artists' artist. You've probably seen him on a Thursday, probably seen him at a show, probably seen his smiley face around town doing all the things he did in Portland before heading up north to give the city of Seattle all of his lovely gifts and talents. Ohmega's first release was "A Request," a soulful and DJ-friendly solo 12" featuring his group Lightheaded and Quannum Recording Artists The Lifesavas. "A Request" received praise from respected DJs, including Mr. Scruff, Gilles Peterson, Greyboy, and the Los Angeles-based Heavyweight Record Pool. Ohmega Watts' sound was compared to Digital Underground drunkenly colliding with Pete Rock at a high rate of speed. Since then he hasn't slowed down and continues to write, produce, design, mc, photograph, dj and do all the things he does so well.

Philly's Phunkestra: From the rich jazz and jam band corners of Chicago to New Orleans' heavy Southern funk tradition comes Philly's Phunkestra Soul Orchestra, an eight-piece rhythm and horn jazz orchestra. Experimenting with a sound both boldly imaginative and well seasoned, the Phunkestra's members are unafraid to congeal classically trained chords to modern pop influence, resulting in songs that are warmly toned and tinged with the George Clinton school of atypical. Based in Portland, Oregon, Phunkestra's members have traveled globally, sharing stages with the Wu-Tang Clan, Ziggy Marley, Michael Franti & Spearhead, K'naan, Israel Vibration and Dirty Dozen Brass Band. These collaborative bills have helped shape the band's sound, allowing them a wealth of live arena experience.

Hope you all come and join us at the Crown Room Saturday night!
