For Stumptown Stories “First Ladies of Jazz” talks, we will be looking at the lives, careers, and recorded legacies of four women who set the gold standard for jazz singing during the swing, bebop, and post-bop eras – Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Dinah Washington. Billie and Ella will be the focus for our first talk.

A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, Bob moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1985, where he earned a B.A. in Music from the University of Puget Sound and a Master’s Degree in Musicology from the University of Washington. As Portland Opera's Resident Historian and Lecturer, Bob successfully engages audiences through his highly popular series of pre-performance talks, and during the season he teaches classes on a wide array of opera-related topics in conjunction with the company's Studio Artist program.

Bob has also appeared as a frequent guest speaker for the Portland Opera Guild, Oregon Symphony, and Chamber Music Northwest. His research interests include Broadway musicals, 1940s Hollywood film scores, and the history of recorded sound.
